If someone doesn't have actual experience felling like Buckin does (or isn't in the trade in some fashion), it's very difficult to convey his level of expertise and skill born of decades and natural ability. It's simply amazing to witness his skills time and time again.
I agree entirely. You look at the comments and the majority are experienced. Laughing.. Billy's fan base are the people who do it or have done it,, and we all take our hats off to him. A pleasure to watch.
Im a hobby cutter and struggle with face cuts. To see him do it is truly a work of art. I can't wait until I get conditioned enough to make it look that easy.
It’s been a while since I have watched Buckin’ and what stands out most in this video is the immeasurable skill he displays in the simplest movements. Keep in mind he is hefting a massive saw that is razor sharp and has tons of power. Your average homeowner has no idea how fast something like this cuts. The tiniest blip on the throttle sends the chain through several inches of the stump in the blink of an eye. Notice how as he put the saw to the tree, there is no hesitation before it sinks into the wood and supports its own weight. Notice how as he transitions from undercut to back cut he grabs the far side of the handle so the saw naturally rotates in his hands and as moves it to the back side of the tree. These are the little things that come from cutting thousands and thousands of trees over decades. This man is a master of his craft, truly.
I sharpened up some chain at weekend, a twenty inch loop of semi-chisel, and paired it to one of those power heads with a lot of horsepower. Just in order to rip down through some tree logs I'd laying in the yard. And while I've been working with my 372 and 365 with various bars for the last few 'weekends'. I knew that as soon as I picked up a larger saw, that it would be a lot faster in the wood. I wasn't wrong either. Here is the thing though, as I was thinking of Billy's point about 'slowing down'. Yes, while I seldom take out my 585 and let it guzzle a litre or two in the wood. It does speed up one's task. The thing is, the 70cc class tool lacks a bit of power, but it's more friendly (from an accuracy point of view), to work with in timber. Because it's a small bit under-powered. Because the less powerful tool makes you 'take your time' a bit more. And it made me wonder, is that one reason (apart from light weight), to depend more on 70cc tools, instead of the bigger engine? Granted I put a 20-inch bar on quite a powerful tool, . . . that's definitely another way to slow one's chain speed down a little. To go with a longer bar. So a 70cc tool with a long enough bar (and chain teeth adequately sharpened), is not a bad combination. To avoid going beyond where one wants to go, in the cut.
Yeah baby that's was sweet Bucking your the best tree guy man love your experience and that saw sounds nasty love the tone deep grunt very nice over and out ❤

Always nice to watch a West Coast faller, they usually have enough Bar to fall a tree from One side of tree, unless their cuttin old growth. Your chainsaw felling tips are great to watch, when you put them into action, thats why I am a viewer of your chainsaw action, but I have learned to skip through your sermons on other subjects. You are always a good watch.
Once again a master class Buckin. Been with you now since I got invalided out of work. Ten yrs or so ago. You kept me sane! Going from sixty hr weeks and side hussle firewood to sitting in a bloody arm chair. Man I looked forward to

Let's review what you did Buckin' (on the 2nd tree). First you assessed the tree, its lean, shape, and branches. Ok, now we put in the initial wedge cut. It looks to be about 1/3 of the way into the tree. You were careful here using your sight to get it right. This cut was made. A little cleanup done. Now, you are on to the back cut (from the high side of the tree). You start out and mention that it would be easy to get careless and cut too far on the blind side and lose the holding wood there - this would send the tree 90 degrees from target and into trouble. You start the back cut and when you are about 6" away you stop and look. You put a couple of wedges in at an angle on the high side of the tree. Now you continue your back cut. You get it close (about 3/4"). I expected the tree to fall but it didn't. Back to the high side to release a little more holding wood. Still it didn't go. Next you banged the wedges - the tree noticably moved forward but still didn't go. You did a little more hinge removal and the tree went over.
Your review was pretty good too the end where ya said I removed a bit more hinge . The last wood removed was when I said on the screen “ final touches on the hinge” 10:55 then it was all wedges . Well done brother 🕺
