It was modern war that no one at the time understood it. The world was still ruled by Empires. It was a mix of old world and new world that in the end destroyed the old ways and even all the old Empires.
I find WW1 fascinating as well, it was only 100 years ago yet still old world of the 19th century. To put in perspective when WW1 broke out the American civil war happened only 50 years prior meaning that many American civil war veterans were still alive then as well as civilians albeit they're all elderly. They actually had a 50 year reunion of the Gettysburg battle in 1913 where veterans of both sides met up
the thing where the men had their own barrage of artillery dropping on their own men was a small part of a large story called "the lost battlion" a major named charles whittlsey led about 400 men into the arragone forest in 1918, they were supposed to have an american battlion to their left and a french battlion to their right, but they advanced too far into the enemy lines and the germans snuck behind them and trapped them in a pocket where they fought off the germans for 4 days... Nearly every man was hurt in some way, shape, or form... At one point, they manages to get a runner who had a message through a very small hole in the german lines. The message called for immediete artillery. The barrage came but was short and it landed it on its own men, which killed about 1/3rd of its men. Cher ami the pigion flew back to base wounded and had the artillery strike called off. on the final day germans came through with flamethrowers and infintry, killing the wounded who couldnt move and anyone who couldn't escape them. Eventually the american battlion that was supposed to be to their right, caught up to the battered men and the 77th division was releaved and they all left the forest. By the end, Major charles whittlsey led around 400 men into the arragone forest, less 200 could walk out on their own. They had taken more casulties then men that had left the pocket. Major charles whittlsey was awarded the medal of honer, but he suffered from PTSD or "shell shock" from what he had seen and jumped off an aircraft carrier that was on its way back to the USA. he killed himself. I know all of this bacause my dad, Robert Laplander, is the leading lost battlion expert in the world, and yes, i suck at spelling, im only 13, so bear with me...
It would be really cool if simple history did a video on the lost battalion.... I would literly flip out and immediately send a link to my dad because he is in France right now

Street pigeons are different from homing pigeons. Street pigeon's max speed would be 60mph but homing pigeons have been clocked around 92mph. New York street pigeons have a max homing range of around 18-20 miles. Homing pigeons have a max homing range of 10,000 miles in 72 days almost nonstop. It's genetics, diet, and then training.

Not only in WWI but I think pigeons were still used all the way to WWII. I remembered a cartoon movie "Valiant" and it tells a story of how pigeons contributed to the war effort during WWII .

Animals have played a huge part in our history, in both peace and war. In England there is actually a memorial to all animals who served in war engraved in stone. From mighty war horses/dogs, food animals, and soldiers companion animals(cats and rats even). Yes, pigeons and hawks are engraved too. Like soliers, may they RIP.
That pigeon was featured in the war movie "The Lost Battalion". If you haven't seen it, watch it. Best modern war movie of our generation.
