The Muncie Mall was rad in the 80's for the Muncie kids. Sultan's Castle, Hot Sam, Muncie Mall Cinemas and so much more. It was a land of wonder.

Remember the store the Checkered Flag? They used to have a HUGE 7 or 8 light stoplight out front? I would sit and eat my PIZZA burger at Orange Julius and stare into it! Loved the main fountain in the middle. I worked in the L.S. Ayres and Co. Nothing but great memories!

I used to go to the MCL in the mall every day with my grandma when I was a little kid, I saw Jim Davis there once, for a 6 year old kid it was like meeting a god. I think the lady at the front of the cafeteria line still remembers me

the only thing that probably keeps this mall open is Ball State being so close. otherwise its liable to become another closed mall like Mounds Mall in Anderson.

I have been there bunches of times. It is sad to see all of the big retailers close forever. It is sad to see it struggle. The Covid-19 pandemic just made made it even worse. I think it is struggling to stay open. My mom and/or grandma would take me to the mall every so often for haircuts at JCPenney.

Iv got footage of the Sears before it closed. It closed back around 2018..Iv eaten at the MCL Cafeteria at that mall before. Use to shop there with my family allot in the early 00s. Last time I was here the place was struggling pretty bad when the Sears was closing so were a few other stores. I need to pay another visit to that mall before it's gone.

As someone who was there in 1972-76 and went back periodically later, I am sorry to see tah the mall is so vacant. However, I am not ready to write it off quite yet. They still have 36 stores open and little to no real competition. (Muncie is literally surrounded by miles of cornfields as show in the intro drive to Muncie.)
OPINION: If the economy bounces and they can get even on anchor store back, I think that they survive. If the local economy tanks, it dies.

This is confusing. It looks unusual to see a Torrid in this type of mall. Then I see the current generation of a bath and body works, while at dying malls you see the old 90s style one. They wouldn't remodel in a dying mall. Then it looked crowded in there. So I think this mall still has a chance if they could redevelop the anchor spots into smaller stores, and maybe convince Dillards or something to take another anchor spot. This reminds me of the Peru mall.

What can you do with a mall that has no more business ?
One idea is to renovate the inside to acomdate hotel rooms fine dinning Bowling swimming pool park .
Maybe put in some bars and casino .
There's alot of ideas to bring back customers .
Problem is it takes money to make money .
This ideal would work not oly for the dieing Muncie Mall but for all the one's that are closing down.
The only other thing to do is to just watch it all fall apart and crumble to the ground .
IT only takes one person to make a difference .

I’ve been here several times; it’s practically dead. The vacancies they have they rent out to a bunch of temporary stores, meaning they haven’t been able to get actual stores to stay in. A lot of the store owners inside this mall such as the Country Charm store and others are interested in moving out soon as well. It will soon be totally dead

I went to this mall on several occasions back in early 2015 back when I was dating someone who went to ball state in muncie. It is so crazy how quickly this mall has declined but I am not surprised due to how the economy has gotten worse and worse more most people over the years and the rise of Amazon.

Used to work at the JCP from 2015-2018 during HS. Spent way too much money at the pizza place the used to be across the JCP. Would walk down to BAM for an overpriced vanilla bean frappe. Time flies. It’s a dying mall for sure.

It is dying. That gamestop\EB was there since I was in late middle school. So, since about mid-late 90s. The store with the pantings was a Victoria's Secret. The store over from that was a Kay\another major Jewelry company.
Sears was at the end of the corridor there. It also appears the candy store by Gamestop is gone as well.
The marble-fronted store was ls ayres originally and than became Macy's(only two story shop in the mall)
At end of one of those halls with an entrance was a bank at one point. Another hallway with an entrance was a nail place. The nail place was there since the 90s at least.
Sadly, in highschool this was my week field trip if made a certain status for each week. I basically had to write a report to go here each week.

I haven't been to the mall in years. There's really no need any more for me. If more stores close, my suggestion would be some kind of entertainment venue with fun things to do for adults and kids. Like a giant dave and busters, with bars and restaurants, arcades, the anchor stores could be bumper cars or a skating rink, etc. Could do climbing walls, miniature golf, one bigger store could have vendor tables where people sell their own goodies or handmade stuff. It just needs to attract people and there is nothing fun to do around here for kids or adults really. Bring the mall back as a place where people want to spend a whole day in there and just for shopping isn't working any more as you can buy anything cheaper and easier online.

Since ive likely squawked the loudest... lol. Its dieing. It was a strong mall until Carsons and Sears closed inside of 2 months, usually other stores filled vacant spaces fast but since 2016 its been a spiral. The jewelry stores opened up stores outside the mall, and Old Navy is building behind the mall beside Kohls.
When Macys suddenly announed the departure and Pennys followed it was over.
Now since Christmas 3 more stores are closing.
Seems most of the stores initially closed where national chains.
The Macy's wing was opened in 96. Really stinks to watch the mall dry up considering its in such good shape.
Ball State isnt much a help, in that its across town and rarely do you see college kids there. But BSU opened a side.of their commerce planning or something like that in the former Dress Barn location.

Somebody else gets it. Low wage job. Low quality of life. Muncie is perfecting this scenario. Maybe they will subsidize more low paying jobs and keep the little people in perpetual misery.

I’ve lived down here since September of 2020, and I remember people talking about JCPenney closing. GameStop has also closed down, but I don’t go very often so I’m not sure if it’s been replaced with something else. I believe they’ve added a Claire’s, and perhaps some other stores have closed or have been opened. But definitely is a dead mall. When I do go, there’s little to almost no one there.

The mall in Anderson ( around 20 miles away) closed a couple of years ago.
Not sure what New Castle has. ( another less than 30 mile drive)
Noblesville ( 45 or so miles away down I69 ) is newer and might draw some business away , but last time I was there it wasn't booming. Not suffering either , just not as busy as it used to be.

Shoe stores must be profitable. They survived. 2 Gag gift shops and a mega sized surplus store and a few other stores were their a few weeks ago. 1st time since Sears closed that I even bothered to go inside and look around. Plenty of empty space to rent if anybody's got big ideas. Lol
Internet shopping is killing retail brick and mortar sales. Bigger selection readily available for a better price and delivered to your door. Just bought 2 lawn mower tires online nowhere to be found in town. Doubt they could compete on price with Muncie property tax in their cost.
Muncie sure knew what they were doing when they subsidized expansion of retail stores around the mall didn't they. Government waste at it's finest.
Quit beating a dead horse trying to build a property tax slush fund.

I live in Muncie and I’ve been saying for a while it’s a dead mall compared to other malls in big cities, it honestly just depends what season it is, or what holidays are coming up if you really want to see activity. Black Friday and Christmas time you’ll see parking lots filled up completely. All of our anchor stores are gone but there’s lots of other stores that keep people coming. There’s lots of window shopping that can be done if your just strolling through

Unless you were there fliming this on a late Sunday evening the amount of people and stores will never pay the bills to keep it open . I was born in Muncie 1952 my n job left in 82 and l followed it. I grew up going to the mall when it opened . While it was being build as teenages we use tibskinnyndip the drainage pondbinbthe field behind it at night
Some how fish was released in it and in the early 70,s you could catch real nice bass, catfish and bluegills out b of it. Ate at cafeteria several times in 78- 79 as acreserve police officer. Sad it will die. The Wal marts and Amazon will kill all the malls
