Man... I saw literally dozens of videos trying to understand OIDs and MIBs and I failed every time. I had even given up. This is the best explanation for sure! Thanks a lot!
Yo, honestly. I love watching this video. The way you talk, the flow of the subject, and the structure of the video makes everything seem very welcoming and easy to understand. I dig this video a lot. It might be because of how sleepy I am having a good time goodnight.
Wow...I rarely comment below videos but this here deserves it. At first I was wondering how you could pack all your stuff from the agenda in (understandable!) 6 minutes, but you were able to manage it. Amazing work.
I am a servicenow developer, in servicenow we have service mapping which is using OID and MIB concept, after watching this video it is very simple for me to understand it
This is a very good and simple to understand video with a good flow, I'm studying for my CEH - already have my SEC+ and this video hits the spot. Thank You
It should be said that v2c and v3 substantially increases the load on devices since they need to authenticate each one with the given information. This is usually just a concern for big networks
Basically, a MIB is a file that details out information about different OIDS but can be easily compared to a DNS where domain names (words) are converted into IP addresses.
Thanks for the explanation!! On an unrelated note, there’s a channel on UA-cam called ‘ETA Prime’ that mostly dabbles in single board devices like Raspberry Pi. You sound JUST like that guy. Your voices are eerily similar. Anyway, thanks again!! >M
head check for me: a MIB outlines the friendly names for OIDs and OID are 'addresses' to specific monitors. and traps are the results of your monitor being sent back to you?
Hi Katui, thanks for your question! We would monitor that device just like any other. First, we would identify which metrics we want to monitor on the device. Then we would find the OIDs associated with the things we want to monitor. Then we would use a network monitoring system like Nagios XI to actually do the monitoring. You can download Nagios XI from the link in the video description. Nagios XI has a Configuration Wizard that allows you to identify the IP/DNS of the device, specify the authentication for the device, and then you specify the OIDs you wish to monitor. For more detailed information, or to work with a technician in regards to this monitoring, please email sales@nagios.com.
Hi Katui! Thanks for your question. Usually when I need a MIB or the manufacturer's document that tells me the OIDs I can monitor, I will do a simple internet search like in the video (3:07). I will generally search using manufacturer's name, the model number of the device, and then the term MIB. For example, when I google "Cisco 2960 MIB" I get the information I need to monitor that specific device. Give it a shot!
Katui CSP - Hi Katui, thanks for the response. There can a number of reasons XI would not receive a response. The device might be down, the device might have an internal configuration error, or there might be a network issue. This comment section here is a difficult place to do a thorough troubleshooting, but I will say that you can get free assistance from our support technicians on the Nagios Support Forum support.nagios.com/forum/ . Here is a video on how to register and post to the forum ua-cam.com/video/8OcOuP9OtI4/v-deo.html
Hi Mudiyala Rathna Kumar. Thanks for your question. So, did you install Net-SNMP on the server? If so, did you configure the CPU monitoring in the snmpd.conf file?
