Origin and early history. Adam Smith was an early advocate for economic liberalism. Developed during the Age of Enlightenment, particularly by Adam Smith, economic liberalism was born as the theory of economics of liberalism, which advocates minimal interference by government in the economy.
P. V. Narasimha Rao took over as Prime Minister in June, and appointed Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister. The Narasimha Rao government ushered in several reforms that are collectively referred to as liberalisation in the Indian media.
In 1991, Singh, as Finance Minister, abolished the Licence Raj, source of slow economic growth and corruption in the Indian economy for decades. He liberalised the Indian economy, allowing it to speed up development dramatically.
Dr Manmohan Singh’s journey from a modest childhood in Gah (now in Pakistan) to one of India’s most respected public figures is well-documented. He has held significant roles, including chief economic adviser, finance minister, leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, and prime minister, among others. Yet, what often goes unnoticed is his unparalleled contribution as a parliamentarian.
Singh married Gursharan Kaur in 1958. They had three daughters, Upinder Singh, Daman Singh and Amrit Singh. Upinder Singh is a professor of history at Ashoka University. ❤❤
Before becoming the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh worked for the United Nations from 1966 to 1969. During this time, he served as an economic advisor to the UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) in New York.
Economic liberalism opposes government intervention in the economy when it leads to inefficient outcomes. They are supportive of a strong state that protects the right to property and enforces contracts. They may also support government interventions to resolve market failures.
The Indo-US nuclear deal was arguably the highest point of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's 10-year term. The deal scripted India's transition from a pariah nuclear weapon state to a legitimate one on the world stage, thus ending decades of isolation effected by the Non-Proliferation Treaty and other technology denial regimes.
Manmohan Singh was the RBI governor between 1982 and 1985. Mumbai: Once or twice a month, the then Governor of the Reserve Bank of India would walk to Mumbai's famous Strand Book Stall in the Fort area to check out the latest arrivals ❤
India has changed dramatically since Manmohan Singh was our prime minister for a decade. His contribution to an economically emergent India must indeed be accepted by the most passionate exponents of new India. None other could have steered so adroitly a state-dominated economy to the reality and opportunity of market
🙏🙏
