I would put 1999 Nebraska up against anyone. That defense was sick with Vanden Bosch and unreal linebackers and safeties. And a solid offense. Nebraska should have been in the NC game this year...VT got in on the back of Vick. From 93-99 Nebraska was insanely good. couple plays from 5 NCs in a decade.
What? They lost to Texas 24-20 in the regular season? Fsu and vtech were both undefeated heading into national championship game. Shit you guys barely beat Kansas, Colorado and southern miss that year!! None of those teams were ranked. The U
Ok..go compare schedules. Tech also barley beat WV. Does that mean ANYTHING? Nebraska beat every team on their schedule. Thats fine dude...1999 Nebraska sucked. And "you guys" aint me numb nuts. I am a Gamecock. I don;'t give a shit I just happen to know this Nebraska team was damn good. And no where did I say they were better than VT. Vick was one of the best football players of all time.
Exactly why there needs to be a true playoff system in college football. Not what we have now with only 4 teams. I mean a 16-20 team playoff.
@@samsticka actually it should be all the confrence champs and 2 at large and that would settle the debate. look at what FCS has and it works, that is the only true way to fixing this shit show.
The 1999 Husker team was probably the strongest inside running team that I have ever seen. They could pound it inside with the best of them. However, they had serious fumble problems--yes, I'm looking at you Dan Alexander. Unfortunately, the Huskers didn't run the option as well as some previous Husker teams. Crouch was a ball hog (but greased lightening in the open field) and the I-backs didn't have the lateral movement skills, hands or speed to dominate on the outside option pitch. But the 1999 team was tough and fun to watch. GBR!
Pretty awesome to see you in the chat of the spring game @bmboldt.....I didn't get an opportunity to properly thank you for these libraries.....I really appreciate it, man!
You are welcome. I dumped cable a while ago so I no longer record games. I didn't even watch all the games last year because they have been so bad lately. I just thought I would catch a little of the stream yesterday.
Huskers should have never gotten rid of Solich.
Solich was a drunk which affected his performance. Didn't stop boozing it up until ohio cops found him passed out at the wheel with car pointing the wrong way. HE WASN'T DRUGGED, HE WAS DRUNK! Ohio was and is the perfect place for him to coach.
@@errose5967 Drunk or no drunk it would have been better than Callahan and Riley.
@Gardner Barnes We back now! at least until the 49ers or Jags offer Scott some outrageous 20 mil contract.
Sweet redemption. Great to see these games when/where the "Blackshirt" defenses of the recent past were so dominant ("historical and educational viewing purposes", indeed).
The rivalry with Texas might've become as intense as the one with OU had NU not split the Big 12 scene. This '99 Champ. Game was big for NU, because all they'd done vs. Texas was lose. Charlie McBride said that, "the 1999 defense was the best he ever coached", and (except for the Suh-led 2009 defense) they might've been the best defense NU has had during my lifetime.
But for one game - midseason vs. Texas, of course - NU coulda/woulda/shoulda/ been playing for a national championship...
Thanks for the upload, "bmboldt" :-)
Didn't Nebraska have a bad case of fumble-itis vs the Longhorns that first game?
Thanks for sharing the game.
Nebraska found too many ways to blow many games against Texas, but not this one.
I still see Buckhalter fumbling the football at the goal line that left us out of the champ game. Oh, what could have been? Damn fumbles. Then again, I still have that image of wide left against FSU that cost us a national championship, too. Then there's the going for two vs Miami. ARgh!!! Nebraska has found many ways to lose big games. Well, they do say it's a game of inches.
@@kiddmarlowe1534 *"Then again, I still have that image of wide left against FSU that cost us a national championship, too"*
But you still have the image of FSU missing their FG earlier in that game, right? Wouldn't they cancel each out in your mind?
@@robjohnson8861Nebraska had a punt return for a TD called back for a phantom, holding call. And Florida State running back, fumbled into the end zone and Nebraska recovered, but they gave them the touchdown. Thats a 14 point swing and Nebraska loses by two. Lastly, Tommie Frazier out played Heisman winner, Charlie Ward in that game. Anyone with eyes could see the Huskers were the better team that night.
Didn’t win the NC but this is as good as that. Beating the evil empire for the title
They should have had a college football playoff back in 1999.
Thanks for the upload.
There are a lot of similarities to the 1984 and 1999 Huskers in a great defense, but also committing turnovers. The 1984 Huskers coughed the ball an average of three times per game (33 turnovers in 11 games, and three in their Bowl Game). The 1999 Huskers lost 25 fumbles and threw 5 INT'S, and amazingly had a plus-5 turnover margin.
As great as both of these squads were, they were also a bit gut-wrenching as they were just a whisker away from playing for the whole ball of wax, more so the 1984 team since they regained the #1 ranking and lost to Oklahoma.
It would have been interesting if the Canes got to play those New Year's Day games in Lincoln!
With the exception of the 1984 and 1995 Orange Bowls, Miami's teams were just SO much better it wasn't even funny. Nebraska learned from that along with the ass-whoopings it took from Florida State to go on their 60-3 run.
@@MaddRapper11203 you punks got lucky in 83,84 that husker team was fav by double digit tds alot of turnovers huskers always#1
born in 1994 sadly I grew up seeing the huskers worst decade I live to see them win a championship
Nebraska lost to Texas earlier in the season, which would be their only loss of the season. Then they face them again in the Big 12 Championship game and beat them. If that's not irony, I don't know what is.
In retrospect, I wish Nebraska's opponent in the Big 12 Championship game in 1999 had been Oklahoma. Those 2 teams didn't meet that year.
Fun fact*** there was some pretty damn good coaches on Neb sideline back then. 1 succeeding real well in Wyoming, another has a few ships in D2 up in Fargo...
Wow! For the first 25 minutes of the game clock, the announcers were acting like only Texas was playing. 5 minutes into the second half the game was over and shockingly, it wasn't Texas who won easily.
Is the game with Opie Applewhite?
Would have never guessed that would be last conference championship for at least 24 to 25 years
According to Texas record books, this game never took place!
Oh his death bed, Osborne will sit up and say F Makovic then fall back and die.
@@robjohnson8861 🤦♂️🤦♂️, you missed the point, Mackovick may of won in 96, Osborne got the last laugh with the National Championship the next year
Even in this game the Huskers fumbled the damn ball. If they hadn't lost the ball so much this year, they would have been playing in the National Championship. It was like they were cursed all year with this.
They had 25 lost fumbles and 5 interceptions, yet had a +5 turnover margin.
OU took over the Big 12 after this season. 12 big 12 titles since 2000.
Nebraska gets revenge from the heartbreaking loss to Texas that cost them a three-peat that awarded to the Florida Gators in 1996 in the Bowl Alliance era
Poor Osborne. Makovic tried to give him the game and he bobbled that opportunity. Tx, 4th and 1 from their won 29 and a QB that had thrown 2 interceptions throws a pass and the rest is history.
They had Opie Applewhite scrambling all over Mayberry RFD.
Can we see the 99 Nebraska at Texas game? that game was really competitive and fun to watch even though we lost
Was that the lone sack of Kaiser's career?
What could have been in 99. I remember the Texas game in the regular season and all those fumbles. We had problems with fumbling all year long. It was some kind of curse that year I remember. Didn’t we fumble it like 30 times that season or some insane number like that? 99 was the best Nebraska defense I had ever seen. We should have been playing FSU for the national championship and I think we would have beat them that year. That Texas loss was a fluke. We gave them the game with all those damn fumbles.
Yeah, that's what I recall, too. Man this team couldn't hold onto the damn ball.
I remember how Nebraska almost jumped Virginia Tech despite having 1 loss. It's a tragic flaw that the BCS suffered from that teams could run through weak conferences like the Big East and get rewarded whereas Nebraska had to go through the Big 12 when it was a war zone.
did you know Eric Crouch was from omaha mill-ard? 27:45 , lol
Opie Applesauce running for his life.
God bless you, child
Never saw McBride so reserved. He knew he was done after this just one more bowl game that didn't matter. And that was the end of Nebraska folks..........forever.
I miss that ABC Music
How many of these guys went onto the NFL?
For Nebraska: 6 starters on the defense, as well as 3 backups went to NFL.
For offense: 3 starters, 1 backup. Kicker too.
However, that was the issue. Solich recruiting and development meant that after this year the starting talent started to decline. The 2002 team, was, at the time, the worst Nebraska team since 1968.
Ironically, Solich actually tried to turn around recruiting, at least on defense, in 2001 and 2002. Part of the reason the defense responded well in 2003, and wasn't bad in 2005, was that the recruiting on that side of the ball had ticked up. However - Solich wasn't around to see the full fruits.
What very few people know and Tom Osborne didn't say publicly is most of the Nebraska team had or recently had the flu and the played like it.
Neb, Close loses to this tx team incomparable to this big NEB domination🎉
I loved Dan Alexander. Good man. I just wished he had a better center of gravity. He could have been a wrecking ball.
I always thought it was a shame Brad Nessler didn't do this game instead of Mushburger.
Nebraska has never lost in the Alamo Dome.
wow. With Frost as coach I guess you're reduced to finding TOTALLY MEANINGLESS stats like this. LOL
The only win Nebraska had against Texas in the big 12
Instead of deciding conference champions with just a single championship game, how about conference tournaments like they do in basketball in baseball where the last team standing is the champion?
@@samsticka How is that different from what they already do? Except in your scenerio it would be based on one game for each team? How is that better than settling it with one game at the end? I'm confused.
@@arthurvandeliegh8681 It would give teams that are doing pretty good a chance to win a conference championship.
@@samsticka They already have that chance. They play games in the season and we learn who's the best based on a bunch of games not just one. Your plan would still have a single game at the end deciding, but would have a single game deciding a lot before that. I don't get it.
Its obvious Nebraska. Is a run first, run second, then play action maybe. Can't Mr Frost see this.
Man, I almost forgot how much I dislike Brent Musberger...He and Danielson could only talk about the negatives of Nebraska...criticizing every play call, second guessing everything. The way they talk about Texas "exploding for a 1st down", vs Nebraska "getting just enough for a first down"...lol Homers
im not a fan of the huskers but they should have played in the Natty this year, they got screwed, they were 100tmes better than thee Vick led hokies. no doubt
Eric was not a run and shoot QB at M-north
Every member of that Texas Offense was from Texas.....EXCEPT the QB lol.....he was from Baton Rouge.
Mack Brown can blatantly chew tobacco during the games but heaven forbid any other coach do it.
Nebraska's last conference title
Eric Crouch!!!
Nebraska beat Texas only once in Big XII play.
God I couldn't stand A humphrey's. He was a major problem and glad they finally handled him.
Just think, Tom Brady was about to be drafted at this time
I just honestly don't like Brent Musburger.
Nebraska had NO passing game.
I once saw a game with Crouch as wingback and Newcombe tossed a perfect pass to him and he ran it into the end zone. Crouch was no QB. He belonged at wingback or a hybrid hb. I like Frank and I think he got put in over his head. He should have let the whiny little betch run back to Omaha and stay off the team when he didn't win starting QB. Osborne recruited Newcomebe to switch the cycles and get someone who could pass. Frank just didn't know what to do with him and to be honest he may have lost Tom's ear after Tom found out Frank knocked up a student.
At 55 I could still drop back and pass better than Eric Crouch. He had to be the worst passer ever. Probably worse than anyone's ever seen!
Nebraska tried to give it away. Ridiculous fumbles.
LOL
When Neb fumbles, it's their fought.
When the other team fumbles, it's a forced fumble.
You little snake of a man.
@@robjohnson8861 right yet maybe actually watch the fumbles dumba$$, they were dropped balls on pitches, carries.
Brent Musberger is such a Texas homer. That was an embarrasment to commentating.
You got that right. He may as well have been wearing Longhorn gear.
+Tyler Harrington he's not a homer. he gambles on the games. guess he had texas in this one.
Both of those dickheads suck as commentators. I love the way they kept talking about the Nebraska turnovers and every time it would be doom and gloom for them. Also, how Texas was going to beat the shit out of Crouch. "The Major" could hardly stand up. Musburger and Danielson fit right in with Herbstreit.
I was impressed we could understand Brent with his head so far up Texas’s ass the entire game.
If Nebraska had been playing for a slot in the Natty they would have choked and got blown out.
Well, Texas couldn't win every single game they played against NU. Just almost every single game.
Hang on to this game ....cherish it....its really all you got....hook'em
For the success you had against Nebraska, OU thumped you so many times it was crazy, right after this too. Man, if not for OU taking them all from you, i wonder how many conference titles Texas wouldve had? Guess we'll never know.
Talk all this s*** you want Texas boy if it wasn't for Reggie doing a stupid lateral that fumbled you wouldn't have nothing so I went by my chest too hard can you wait till Southeastern Conference gets done with you
KState was better than both these teams. Go cats!
@@bmboldt well, they were at least better than UT for sure. KState got Nebraska back in 2000.
