I like the subtle lyric shift between verse 1 and 2. First time it says it says "Who's the next witch you must burn," next time it says "you are the witch, you must burn." Which I think perfectly reflects the fallacy of extreme witch hunts and cancel cultures. Those who feel they are justified in helping these causes often find THEMSELVES as the next victim because of something they themselves did. Sort of a "judge not, lest ye be judged" type of warning.
Modern James lyrics have been hit or miss over the last couple decades, but man, when it hits, it hits hard. This song rules. Probably my favourite on the album after Inamorata Whether people like Metallica or not, they are one of the hardest working bands in the music industry. This album and the last album they made a music video for every song
You are correct, the tides do shift in this song. But it's not the one being "cancelled" that has the shift. The lyrics in the chorus change just before the bridge, when he says: "Question yourself, you may learn. YOU are the witch, you must burn. You must burn!" The more I listen to 72 Seasons, the more this album grows on me. Seems every listen gives me a new favorite song. And to me, this is an indication of, a GREAT album. Loved your reaction and keep up the GREAT work Lilly Jane! 🤘🤘🤘
4:33 - The term for this is 'The Overton Window' where what was acceptable is not any more so the middle moderate line moves far right or far left - then those on the middle to others will now appear far right or far left even though they are the middle and did not move, those around them changed their views and moved right or left. THIS is why we are where we are today, loads of people went far left so now the middle to them appears to be far right but it is not. They do not realise they are far left as they think they are the middle! lol
In the end when he switches up to “YOU are the Witch, YOU must burn”, reminds me of the book “A Tale of Two Cities”, when the perpetrators of the Revolution become the victims of it.
My fav off the album along with Crown of Barbed Wire. The lyrics simultaneously can be taken literal as a old time witch hunt/trial, and as an allegory for modern cancel culture. The song is a love letter to Black Sabbath as far as style and lyrics. I can almost hear Ozzy singing this. Great crunchy riffs and a groove that could knock the treads off a tank. This song absolutely burns. (Pardon the pun.) Just make sure you don't skip Barbed Wire if you keep going with 72.
Great reaction and on spot. Metallica's lyrics are always left to each own to interpret, that is only one of the things that makes them great. I love this album, the more you listen to it the better it gets. And not the last. Nope.
In order to create a better society for humanity, we must first understand our history and what we've done. If we sit back and act like it never happened, then that's when it comes back to bite us again. Never let what atrocities human kind has done to other human beings be hidden. For when we do the venom that destroys the skin will eat straight to the bone. And in reference to the fact they've made a video for every song on this album. They've actually made a video for every song the past 2 albums. And that's funny because they were dead set on never making a music video until they made a video for the song "One" off 1988's ...And Justice For All album. Which imo is one of the greatest music videos of all-time, objectively. MetallicA has some odd music videos too.
“Room” and “Ina” from this album will please you a lot 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘. The day the guys call it a day the World of Music will mourn….but we still have one album from them I guess
I say hopefully 2more albums every 4years. Been fan since 84 I'm happy ay 60years old they still making new Music and I'm 55 happy to hear it from them.
@@lillyjanereacts You already reacted to some of the songs from The Black Album though, lol. "Enter Sandman", "The Unforgiven" and "Nothing Else Matters".
I've followed Metallica since the Black Album, as well as a few social media outlets of theirs. In some of their most recent interviews leading up to this new release they have stated they still love making music and performing together, some 42 years later. As far as a video for every song, they also gave the same treatment to their 2016 release 'Hardwired..To Self-Destruct', releasing a music video for each song, 13 in total. I think it's a safe bet they are here to stay.
Exactly! We’re burning the past insupf learning from it…only paving the the perfect landscape to do that type of shit all over again, just with new “enemies”
Maam, lily jane .can you please try to check the load album..there is good songs of that album but not really good thrashy but the sounds was different..
I thought it was a great first time review and reaction! Well done. Metallica went off the rails for a bit. Anyone who has watched some kind of monster knows that. Here we have Metallica doing what they love and doing it as well as they ever have. Best song off yellow album for me.
How are you liking 72 Seasons so far? I can't wait for you to get to last three songs on the album. Other than "Screaming Suicide," those are my favorites :)
While this aint the thrashy Metallica I grew up with and adored , to me without a doubt this their best release since The Black Album . All in all that is . I honestly thought for years I wouldnt really like a Metallica record again more than just a spin to check it out . I liked some songs here and there but 72 Seasons I really dig ! Like I said it aint the same but it still rocks in its own way ! If they never did another record this would be a good one to end on . Unless they miraculously pull out And Justice for All style album !! LOL
This sounds like a mash-up of Sad But True and St Anger with a hint of Where The Wild Things Are. It's fine for what it is, but all these new Metallica songs are just mush-ups of old riffs and old guitar solos - there's nothing original on the entire album. Props to the band for still sounding better than 99% of the other bands out there though.
good ol' Lars and his snare obsession. I actually do like the song, but Lars really overuses the snare. In their old age, I would expect for them to go out will something semi-chill like Load or Reload. I also said that before their last two albums and they've surprised me lol.
To me its like this, Metallica will proberly make another album, unless someone gets a disease or something, and also i think the time of Metallica making legendary songs is over, however this album still got a lot of bangers!!" its just not legendary like back in the days, but me personel, i still listen to these bangers, and take Metallica´s new albums as new projects, not reflecting to much on the past.. I did notice on the Metallica tour, that it does take strenght from James, in some situation he do look tired, and used up, so i think its last time we see a great tour like this, and if they do another one, its gonna be scaled down a bit..
Loved the reaction, as always. Again, would definitely recommend reacting to the lyric video, not the music video, for the next song you have to react to from the album, "Crown of Barbed Wire"; just worry the music video's going to be too distracting from the song, but keen to get your reaction either way, as it's my favourite song on the album. 🤘🏻
My first listen to this song with you Lilly, like another commentor mentioned, it reminded me of Sad But True off rhe Black album. After the Black album I basically left Metallica behind and am now into Japanese metal bands like Lovebites who have taken the elements of 80's metal and refined it. Lilly, check out: Lovebites The Awakening/Hammer of Wrath Live

I can't stand any metallica after the and justice for all album. I remember when the black album came out I was like wtf? It seemed like they sold out. Nothing like their previous albums. I was a hardcore metallica fan back in the day so to hear them switch up like that was crazy to me. I love thrash metal to this day and from the black album and on isn't thrash, it's more like alternative. I'm sure I'll get a lot of butt hurt ass feedback from this but that's just me. To each their own.
Oh boy, here we go yet again! Listen, Metallica HAD TO CHANGE their approach to how they were doing things. And they realized that when they saw the audience reaction to the longer songs on the Justice album. WHY IS THAT SO DAMN DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE WHO REFUSE TO GIVE METALLICA'S STUFF PAST THE JUSTICE ALBUM A FAIR SHOT TO COMPREHEND OR REALIZE? They had to hire Bob Rock, they absolutely had to have someone help them to reel them in and have them get to the point of the songs. "From The Black Album and on isn't thrash, it's more like alternative." So what if The Black Album wasn't thrash? Metallica knew that they couldn't stick to doing just thrash. Also, METALLICA! NEVER!
