How many times have I seen this? Riders afraid to ride the off camber left side of a right bend in the road. It’s a skills deficit unfortunately that routinely kills riders. Both riders were lucky.
That’s how my relative was killed and it almost happened to me but i heard a woman’s voice scream out “STOP” so i immediately stopped and then a trail bike flew past, it sent chills down my spine. I often wonder was it my Grandmother who had certainly passed away.
There are too many riders on the trails with their heads up their ace. Last month, a guy riding with us was gazing off to his left and didn't notice that the rider behind me and myself had come to a stop to make a u turn. The guy on the DR 650 pegged me at 30 mph. By the grace of God, his front tire missed my left knee by less than 3 inches. Threw me off my klr and his bike landed on top of mine. The T Rex crash bars saved my bike from severe damage. A month later, my left leg is still sore, but it could have been a lot worse. I tried doing the guy a solid by not filing a police report as we were on a highway. He finally paid for the bike damage, but wouldn't help cover my doctor bills. Lesson learned about being a nice guy.
Mate, your compassion and composure in that situation was outstanding. Once you worked out you were still in one piece, to go over and so elegantly check on the other guy shows the true gentleman you are. Someone this world could learn a lot from. Glad it's just the bike carrying injuries and look forward to seeing you back out there soon.
Just goes to show that staying to the correct side, even on back roads is *ALWAYS* important. Really damn glad both of you came out of that in decent shape.
Amazingly handled. The fact the other person wasn’t staying left would have a hot head like me boiling. You don’t get too many second chances from a situation like this. I envy your composed nature.
This may sound harsh but I have zero tolerance when it comes to this behavior (riding on the wrong side). If your line choice requires you to go onto the other side (Left or Right), you need to be Extremely Cautious around blind turns and hill crests. If you can't see them, they can't see you. If you lack the self control to combat complacency, you shouldn't be riding on public roads/land or near people. And this is negligence, not an accident. You would think riders should know better. On a happier note, glad everyone seems more or less OK. Looks like beautiful countryside to ride in.

Anymore left up the hill and you would have been in that rut (looks like a rut on video). Unfortunately there's nothing more you could have done. Honking horns pre-turn does not consistently work due to a number of variables like exhaust, ear plugs, road/wind noise, etc. Brendo's Cam makes it look like a glancing hit. If you would have bailed left, the oncoming rider was swerving right anyways, so it would have been a body to bike collision instead of a bike to bike collision. Only recommendation I could even think of off the top of my head is: If you don't wear hard chest armor under your jacket, you may want to consider it. Having broken ribs is not enjoyable. I wear a alpine star a-10 under my klim baja and it's really comfy.

Just seeing how he was positioned, to be honest I was getting pretty concerned with how he was holding up. Actually thought at one stage that he might've needed an ambulance himself! Fingers crossed my insurance will cover it all and I'll be back on the road in no time!
So glad you're ok Brett and mate your an Aussie champion for checking on your new mate so quickly. Sadly it was one of those things that starts with "IF Only" if only he stayed on the left, if only I took the right track instead of the left, above all you both live to ride again. 👍
That was a truly AWESOME video and Adventure right up to the point that fool wrote you off. WHERE WAS HIS APOLOGY??? FFS, really, he not only was riding like a moron (on the right side) but during the second he had to see you coming he managed to slide even more into your lane. Please god he either gives up riding or gets extensive training before getting back on a bike... even then I hope I don't come across him. Sorry to see this Brett, hope all goes well with the replacement.
Thanks Captain!! Yeah very strange, I suppose when shock and injury sets in, then he realised that the accident and whole situation was all on him, yeah thats a lot to take on. Will be working on the replacement once I get a new helmet and jacket sorted, oh and when this rain pisses off!! man is it ever going to stop raining!!!
I imagine this happens more often than we care to admit! So many videos out there of people cutting corners or just assuming they couldn't possibly run into anyone! Glad all involved on this day came out relatively unharmed.
My goodness. I’ll say again, that crunch sound was massive. Glad the fleshy parts are okay, the hard parts can be replaced. That was some great riding up to that point though.

Unless you are in a right hand country that is (like us in the US and Canada)... but there where you live this makes perfect sense. Hope Brett's wrist heals up well.
I find it scary up in the mountains of the Idaho panhandle at times with blind corners everywhere. My father had a crash and I went down the mountain as fast as possible on a Honda cr 250 flat out rushing to get the trailer and oxygen for him . He survived. The 2 nd crash killed him . 2 of my friends were injured on rides like this . One was a head on truck that hit him they were drunk and did not want to call the rangers until they sobered up. He is doing good with scars all over him.My other friend was hit by a car that drifted a corner in the mountains and he was paralyzed. He is now walking with a cane 10 years later. In the woods you are on your own sometimes. Ride with friends.
Man that's horrible. I still do a lot of solo rides but prefer to have people with me. I've had so many close calls, there's a lot that will come out of this in the future!

If conditions are challenging to stay left then slow the fuck down or turn around. Everyone rides with the intention of returning safely to their loved ones. That collision was tough to watch!!!
Keeping left is so crucial on dirt roads, there would've been ample room for him to pass safely but complacency certainly got the better of him on that day.
I’ve had 2 mates have head on crashes. Both times they had bad foot injuries. You handled the situation well. Blind corners wrong side of road disaster waiting to happen
From days of old we were told by experience riders to ride to what you can see. I have this impression many middle aged riders do not know how to ride well.
Glad all are ok, stuff happens real quick and you handled the situation incredibly well. Glad you weren't travelling any faster this could of been a different outcome.

Happy that all parties seem to be ok and kudos to you and your crew for keeping your cool in a situation that could have gotten very heated. Your caution going around corners likely saved you as well as the bonehead riding on the wrong side of the trail some serious injury. Hope you are back to riding soon and heal completely.
First thing I would have done is checking on the bloke that I crashed into as a result of me riding on the wrong side of the road, not checking on my DR650! Then I would have gotten on my knees and apologise profusely for the pain I caused, call insurance, call tow truck, offer to drive to hospital for check-ups, get a reverse tattoo on my forehead that says "I will not ride on the wrong side of the road again" so I can see it every time I look into my mirror. Anyway I'm glad you're ok mate. After watching this I think I should get myself a Garmin InReach device. Keep us update on the new bike eh ;) and stay safe.

That is always the problem when riding on Jeep/single track. Bikers don't stay on their side because it's easier and quicker to cut corners. Glad you're ok
Can't really put a "Like" on this video, but I sure appreciate that you came out of it rather undamaged. Looks like your old helicopter skills came in handy here, Brett: You kept your head cool! It all still sucks though. I hope it works out in a speedy way when it comes to insurance and getting all new gear and machine.
Accidents are never fun but most can be avoided. Any time you ride on a single lane road you always have to assume there is a car coming at you just outside your field of vision. It sucks to ride that defensively all the time but it's what you have to do.
@@ADVBrett Yep, all the time and most of the time it is not reported because nobody got hurt, but it is only a mater of time. People need to remember the road rules still apply and a head on can kill you on the off road just as easy as the highway.
Why was the rider on the wrong side of the track? I have seen this happen too often. You cannot assume that riders are not coming in the other direction. We (RFS) had a rescue on a track out the back of Seal Rocks. Both riders were doing about 80kph, That was a 160kph impact. Both bikes were destroyed and we took two hours to get the riders to an ambulance. They had facial fractures and a broken leg and shoulder each. Its a quick way for National Parks to ban bikes completely on their tracks.
Totally agree!! I want this message to "Slow Down, Stay Left and Live" to get pushed so hard! I see this all too often from my seat at work as well, we were both so very lucky that it turned out like it did! A head on crash does double the speed but the actual impact is the same as hitting something stationary at 80kph. So crash speed is 80kph. So sience proves that having 2 people hitting head on at 80 kph it would EFFIN SUCK ASS to be one of those people.
Maybe me confused you or sumfin but what I said is true. If you hit something else going the same speed as you the actual force of the accident is the same as hitting a stationary immoveable thing at the same speed. Look it up. Mythbusters did a show on it and everytang mate.
Far out man that sucks you can see you were washing off speed into blind corners and keeping left. The other bloke looked completely rattled as expected glad both of you ok thou.
18:39 no oncoming rider, 18:40, nothing, 18:40.5 visible and collision at 18:41. Not much warning time. We Americans have an unwritten rule on the trails, when in doubt, ride right. Then I heard the accents, oh, down under…other guy didn’t ride on the proper side. So, if the white bike would have done that here, nothing would have happened or the guy with the Africa Twin would have been at fault. Subtle differences between countries, but still very important.
Back in the day I once rode with a young motocross wannabe that did full power power slides around allmost every blind corner on the trail. I winced every time he did it. Trail riding I could keep up with him but on a motocross track no way. Because somehow he didn't die and grew up to be World champion mx rider Todd Waters.
@ADVBrett Yeah a brush with fame. I also rode MTB and DIRT MOTO with Tracy and Mick Hannah. Tracy won a Junior World cup and Mick was 7 times national Champ in DH MTB. I was faster on a moto but no chance on a MTB. GOOD TIMES.
I'm from Europe. Watching that crash - 1st thought: man you ride in wrong side - middle on the road... only bit later realize that this is from Australia part of the world where you should ride in other side of the road.... :D But still - when riding off-road tracks - keep in mind, after blind corners, or jumps - there could be someone coming your way..
@@janisvinters8797 I treat it like there's always someone on the other side. However on this day it didn't really help that much. I think my impact speed was 35 km an hour but he did look like he was going a lot quicker
The tradeoff between staying on your side of the lane and taking the curve wide. On your side, you're in the right. On the outside you have more time to react. I'd say outside is likely the safer bet as there's always someone thinking, "It's a one lane road, it's all on my side." Then there's also the 4x4s, the whole lane is, in fact, their side.
I almost had a bike rider end up as a hood ornament on my jeep years ago. Fortunately I was not going very fast and we avoided collision. Moments later his mate came around the bend and he too almost ran into me. Another time riding my bike I came around a bend and a logging truck was coming down the hill. We he just had the whole road and no where to go. Not going too quickly I was able to go wide which was the wrong side of the road and the side of a steep drop-off yikes. Never assume you are the only one out there.
Mate well done on no one arking up and doing then right thing checking on everyone. Accidents happen but glad physically everyone is pretty good. Might try and join you on a ride, see what the Pan Am can handle
There was a head-collision in California involving Aussie tourists who mistaking got back on the left side of the highway, thus heading north in southbound lanes. They survived but the injuries were catastrophic. 65 MPH zone.
Interesting to see the comments here about riding the "wrong side of the road". Is this considered a road? I would always take the outside of any corner to make sure I have max visibility, I would always avoid the inside. Where I live this is hardly ever a problem, just wondering what etiquette is.
@@gasdive 100%!! Going over the crest of a hill on the wrong side is unbelievable. Here in the US we are dealing with side by sides. So every single blind rise and corner you have to be prepared to dive off to the side.

Hi Brett, what a bad ending to a beautiful ride you were going so well mate! We can't help riders who take risks a tough lesson for every body so very glad you came out of it ok. Lets hope your insurance covers everything . I got taken out years ago in the gembrook forest by a unlicensed unregistered learner on single trail my ktm300 broken front disc and headlight front guard ended up getting the ktm450 to replace it.

here we drive on the left thus we ride on the left - do simple things like that not matter to some? apparently so - it isn't just there that it happens, i have nearly been taken out many times by knobheads myself on trails, FFS people just use your f'in heads. FWIW if that was me i would have dealt severely with the fool right there and then, i hope he has adequate insurance to cover his ludicrous riding and disregard.

Old mate looked like he was in the middle and then made the choice to head right, it seemed as if he vacillated for a bit, maybe your wingman coming up on the right (his left) spooked him a bit? I rode those trails and similar for decades, you have to be unlucky, but there are other forces at play these days. Maybe another vid prompted more than one party to contemplate that route? Be interesting to do an analysis. Good thing is that nobody is seriously hurt, the freaky twin will undoubtedly be insured. Dunno about the DR (?) I have ridden the wall of death and gone over the edge on a number of occasions as my gunfighter reflexes got me out of the jam, but it was just blind luck in honest appraisal. My personal (lived) nightmare is a flat bed, sharp edged truck just around a blind leftie, with armco/drop on the right and another vehicle coming the other way. Lotta pain there, no matter what. Anyways, enough of my waffle, get back on it, right quick ...
In my opinion there is no correct side of the road when it is just a bush track where there are obstacles, pot holes , logs, dangling branches, water hazards, wash-outs etc. Just like any other time you ride to the conditions, slow for blind corners and go steady when not familiar to the course chosen. I have personally had a head-on riding a bush track following my buddy on similar DT175s, and our heads clashed. My bike sustained no damage, where as the other bike bent it's forks and became unrideable, and both riders were slightly shaken. Communication is important when riding as a duo or group,so discussing expectations beforehand could help avoid any tragedies.
Communication is irrelevant. These are public tracks. Anyone has the right to be coming the other way, and you should set your expectations accordingly. I don't tend to ride that much anymore, because no one rides according to their visibility, and we've had people killed in our group accordingly (it doesn't have to be your fault to be killed).
@@timconnors The communication I am refering to is when some tracks may need the experienced rider sharing the traps that may be encountered with the newbie. Not all tracks are public and not all tracks are two vehicles wide. Occasionally a track that may have been shared with the public all of a sudden has an almost invisible fencing wire strands accoss the entrance. Shit can happen, so communication may be helpfull.

I've seen this kind of arrogance of others figuring they are the only ones on these roads and ride blindly around corners and hills in the others possible path. My friend actually had his bike destroyed and he can never ride again because of this exact incident in Idaho, few years back. There are many video's people post of themselves and their fellow riders doing it even here. Those making riding training video's on line need to enforce this teaching in their video's, because far too many people are doing it and your turn at having your trip, your bike, your life destroyed because of it might be next. Its not being harsh, its the fact that it ruins others enjoyment of riding.

@@adamadamhoney yeah I did a pretty good self assessment, waiting for pain to set in and going easy on the get up. I was concerned about old mate who hit me because we wasn't moving much other than standing over his bike. I've still got pain in my wrist, shoulders and knees but seeing Dr's for those issues.
They're are some trails near me had a few close calls actually there has been so many crashes on that trail they put big mirrors around the corners and they work saved my butt a few times from running into someone trail looks awesome btw hopefully your back at it soon
I'm pretty lucky with full coverage from my insurance. I called them right away and they arranged the tow. I "should" hear from them by the end of next week about the bike and gear. I had my helmet, jacket and pants all covered by the insurance as well. I'm pretty sure he's going to have a fair whack of outgoings after this crash!
That could have been a LOT worse...... Sometimes, us older blokes need to take a reality check. 1) we are no longer young. 2) our reflexes are a LOT slower than they used to be... 3) we can't ride like we used to!
I had some knuckle dragger do this to me in Moab, UT about a decade ago. Luckily I had JUST enough room to get fully left. (they were out of control up a hill, blind corner) The couple was on a utility quad both had flip flops on, he had shorts only and she was in a bikini. She hit the brakes so hard he flew into her head knocking all the front teeth out of him and slamming her face into the handlebars. She stayed on the machine and he went flying. About 30 ft across the hard pack, sharp Moab sandstone. They were a bloody mess for sure. Luckily they didn't get anyone in my group behind me.

Just a bit sooner or later, damn! Effing corner at the wrong time. If riding in a different country i ALWAYS put a indicator to fight this instinct. Africa twin is a beast taking the hit.

Had a guy coming towards me cutting the corner on his bike well on my side nearly clipping my bars and sending me my brother and his mate off that where behind me lucky that didn't happen. Personally, I wouldn't have handled it that calmy considering if I was in the right. Hope he has insurance. I have a new bike, I would not be happy to have it written off, by someone being on the wrong side of the road. Idiotic to be on the wrong side of the road on a bend, and both the riders coming at you were! EDIT: Inexperience on that older riders part, possibly a returning rider or fairly new rider.

Happened to me as well. Ocala Florida. All the trails are 2 way some idiot weekend warrior going to fast for the line of sight slammed into me. I stopped and jumped away but he hit square on. Bone sticking out of his hand. I said to him, am i going the wrong way hete ( fully knowing it a 2 way trail) and the d a answers ya😂 sucks you broke your hand i said as we rode away
My YT has the HD flag on the playback....and I went into the quality settings and selected 720....but the video is absolutely terrible! So pixelated & blurring whenever they're riding along.

@@savagegtalks5912 Not a hiking track or forest, it's a public area open to the public with access by 2wd. Most of our National Parks are like that. It's certainly not a place for hiking, that's for sure!
Well, Jesus healed me of stage 4 cancer in EVERY organ and system in my body with 20 days to live when I was diagnosed. 7 rounds of chemo and 18 of radiation and 3 years cancer free I will stick with Jesus….but will still enjoy my Africa Twin too😂👍

How many times have I seen this? Riders afraid to ride the off camber left side of a right bend in the road. It’s a skills deficit unfortunately that routinely kills riders. Both riders were lucky.
That’s how my relative was killed and it almost happened to me but i heard a woman’s voice scream out “STOP” so i immediately stopped and then a trail bike flew past, it sent chills down my spine. I often wonder was it my Grandmother who had certainly passed away.
There are too many riders on the trails with their heads up their ace. Last month, a guy riding with us was gazing off to his left and didn't notice that the rider behind me and myself had come to a stop to make a u turn. The guy on the DR 650 pegged me at 30 mph. By the grace of God, his front tire missed my left knee by less than 3 inches. Threw me off my klr and his bike landed on top of mine. The T Rex crash bars saved my bike from severe damage. A month later, my left leg is still sore, but it could have been a lot worse. I tried doing the guy a solid by not filing a police report as we were on a highway. He finally paid for the bike damage, but wouldn't help cover my doctor bills. Lesson learned about being a nice guy.
Mate, your compassion and composure in that situation was outstanding. Once you worked out you were still in one piece, to go over and so elegantly check on the other guy shows the true gentleman you are. Someone this world could learn a lot from.
Glad it's just the bike carrying injuries and look forward to seeing you back out there soon.

This may sound harsh but I have zero tolerance when it comes to this behavior (riding on the wrong side). If your line choice requires you to go onto the other side (Left or Right), you need to be Extremely Cautious around blind turns and hill crests. If you can't see them, they can't see you. If you lack the self control to combat complacency, you shouldn't be riding on public roads/land or near people. And this is negligence, not an accident.
You would think riders should know better.

Unfortunately there's nothing more you could have done. Honking horns pre-turn does not consistently work due to a number of variables like exhaust, ear plugs, road/wind noise, etc. Brendo's Cam makes it look like a glancing hit. If you would have bailed left, the oncoming rider was swerving right anyways, so it would have been a body to bike collision instead of a bike to bike collision.
Only recommendation I could even think of off the top of my head is: If you don't wear hard chest armor under your jacket, you may want to consider it. Having broken ribs is not enjoyable. I wear a alpine star a-10 under my klim baja and it's really comfy.
That's all good!! I love getting the conversation going and this video is going to be a great learning tool for all riders! I had chest armour in my jacket and since getting the Alpinestars Bogota jacket I'm seriously going to look at the Tech Air 5 as I've heard so much positivity about it!

My goodness. I’ll say again, that crunch sound was massive. Glad the fleshy parts are okay, the hard parts can be replaced. That was some great riding up to that point though.

I find it scary up in the mountains of the Idaho panhandle at times with blind corners everywhere. My father had a crash and I went down the mountain as fast as possible on a Honda cr 250 flat out rushing to get the trailer and oxygen for him . He survived. The 2 nd crash killed him . 2 of my friends were injured on rides like this . One was a head on truck that hit him they were drunk and did not want to call the rangers until they sobered up. He is doing good with scars all over him.My other friend was hit by a car that drifted a corner in the mountains and he was paralyzed. He is now walking with a cane 10 years later. In the woods you are on your own sometimes. Ride with friends.
Man that's horrible. I still do a lot of solo rides but prefer to have people with me. I've had so many close calls, there's a lot that will come out of this in the future!

Why was the guy approaching from the front riding on the right side? Keep left even applies on dirt roads.
Because he got complacent, simple as that. You can tell from his posture and reaction when they were checking on him that he knew he fucked up.
Keeping left is so crucial on dirt roads, there would've been ample room for him to pass safely but complacency certainly got the better of him on that day.

From days of old we were told by experience riders to ride to what you can see. I have this impression many middle aged riders do not know how to ride well.

Your caution going around corners likely saved you as well as the bonehead riding on the wrong side of the trail some serious injury. Hope you are back to riding soon and heal completely.
First thing I would have done is checking on the bloke that I crashed into as a result of me riding on the wrong side of the road, not checking on my DR650! Then I would have gotten on my knees and apologise profusely for the pain I caused, call insurance, call tow truck, offer to drive to hospital for check-ups, get a reverse tattoo on my forehead that says "I will not ride on the wrong side of the road again" so I can see it every time I look into my mirror.
Anyway I'm glad you're ok mate. After watching this I think I should get myself a Garmin InReach device. Keep us update on the new bike eh ;) and stay safe.

well, on trails you should follow a imaginary lane. In that case the incoming rider was wrong I think.
That is always the problem when riding on Jeep/single track. Bikers don't stay on their side because it's easier and quicker to cut corners. Glad you're ok

Accidents are never fun but most can be avoided. Any time you ride on a single lane road you always have to assume there is a car coming at you just outside your field of vision. It sucks to ride that defensively all the time but it's what you have to do.

@@ADVBrett Yep, all the time and most of the time it is not reported because nobody got hurt, but it is only a mater of time. People need to remember the road rules still apply and a head on can kill you on the off road just as easy as the highway.

Why was the rider on the wrong side of the track? I have seen this happen too often. You cannot assume that riders are not coming in the other direction. We (RFS) had a rescue on a track out the back of Seal Rocks. Both riders were doing about 80kph, That was a 160kph impact. Both bikes were destroyed and we took two hours to get the riders to an ambulance. They had facial fractures and a broken leg and shoulder each. Its a quick way for National Parks to ban bikes completely on their tracks.

A head on crash does double the speed but the actual impact is the same as hitting something stationary at 80kph. So crash speed is 80kph. So sience proves that having 2 people hitting head on at 80 kph it would EFFIN SUCK ASS to be one of those people.

18:39 no oncoming rider, 18:40, nothing, 18:40.5 visible and collision at 18:41. Not much warning time. We Americans have an unwritten rule on the trails, when in doubt, ride right. Then I heard the accents, oh, down under…other guy didn’t ride on the proper side.
So, if the white bike would have done that here, nothing would have happened or the guy with the Africa Twin would have been at fault. Subtle differences between countries, but still very important.

Back in the day I once rode with a young motocross wannabe that did full power power slides around allmost every blind corner on the trail. I winced every time he did it. Trail riding I could keep up with him but on a motocross track no way. Because somehow he didn't die and grew up to be World champion mx rider Todd Waters.

@ADVBrett Yeah a brush with fame. I also rode MTB and DIRT MOTO with Tracy and Mick Hannah. Tracy won a Junior World cup and Mick was 7 times national Champ in DH MTB. I was faster on a moto but no chance on a MTB. GOOD TIMES.
I'm from Europe. Watching that crash - 1st thought: man you ride in wrong side - middle on the road... only bit later realize that this is from Australia part of the world where you should ride in other side of the road.... :D
But still - when riding off-road tracks - keep in mind, after blind corners, or jumps - there could be someone coming your way..
@@janisvinters8797 I treat it like there's always someone on the other side. However on this day it didn't really help that much. I think my impact speed was 35 km an hour but he did look like he was going a lot quicker
The tradeoff between staying on your side of the lane and taking the curve wide. On your side, you're in the right. On the outside you have more time to react. I'd say outside is likely the safer bet as there's always someone thinking, "It's a one lane road, it's all on my side." Then there's also the 4x4s, the whole lane is, in fact, their side.
Hard choice out in the bush too, fate works its way into the equation
I almost had a bike rider end up as a hood ornament on my jeep years ago. Fortunately I was not going very fast and we avoided collision. Moments later his mate came around the bend and he too almost ran into me. Another time riding my bike I came around a bend and a logging truck was coming down the hill. We he just had the whole road and no where to go. Not going too quickly I was able to go wide which was the wrong side of the road and the side of a steep drop-off yikes. Never assume you are the only one out there.
Mate well done on no one arking up and doing then right thing checking on everyone. Accidents happen but glad physically everyone is pretty good. Might try and join you on a ride, see what the Pan Am can handle

There was a head-collision in California involving Aussie tourists who mistaking got back on the left side of the highway, thus heading north in southbound lanes. They survived but the injuries were catastrophic. 65 MPH zone.

Interesting to see the comments here about riding the "wrong side of the road". Is this considered a road? I would always take the outside of any corner to make sure I have max visibility, I would always avoid the inside. Where I live this is hardly ever a problem, just wondering what etiquette is.

@@gasdive 100%!! Going over the crest of a hill on the wrong side is unbelievable. Here in the US we are dealing with side by sides. So every single blind rise and corner you have to be prepared to dive off to the side.
National Parks, the roads are for registered vehicles/bikes only, therefore road rules apply at all times.
Same rules apply here, but we ride on the left side of the road

Hi Brett, what a bad ending to a beautiful ride you were going so well mate! We can't help riders who take risks a tough lesson for every body so very glad you came out of it ok. Lets hope your insurance covers everything . I got taken out years ago in the gembrook forest by a unlicensed unregistered learner on single trail my ktm300 broken front disc and headlight front guard ended up getting the ktm450 to replace it.

here we drive on the left thus we ride on the left - do simple things like that not matter to some? apparently so - it isn't just there that it happens, i have nearly been taken out many times by knobheads myself on trails, FFS people just use your f'in heads. FWIW if that was me i would have dealt severely with the fool right there and then, i hope he has adequate insurance to cover his ludicrous riding and disregard.

Old mate looked like he was in the middle and then made the choice to head right, it seemed as if he vacillated for a bit, maybe your wingman coming up on the right (his left) spooked him a bit?
I rode those trails and similar for decades, you have to be unlucky, but there are other forces at play these days. Maybe another vid prompted more than one party to contemplate that route? Be interesting to do an analysis.
Good thing is that nobody is seriously hurt, the freaky twin will undoubtedly be insured. Dunno about the DR (?)
I have ridden the wall of death and gone over the edge on a number of occasions as my gunfighter reflexes got me out of the jam, but it was just blind luck in honest appraisal.
My personal (lived) nightmare is a flat bed, sharp edged truck just around a blind leftie, with armco/drop on the right and another vehicle coming the other way. Lotta pain there, no matter what.
Anyways, enough of my waffle, get back on it, right quick ...
In my opinion there is no correct side of the road when it is just a bush track where there are obstacles, pot holes , logs, dangling branches, water hazards, wash-outs etc. Just like any other time you ride to the conditions, slow for blind corners and go steady when not familiar to the course chosen. I have personally had a head-on riding a bush track following my buddy on similar DT175s, and our heads clashed. My bike sustained no damage, where as the other bike bent it's forks and became unrideable, and both riders were slightly shaken. Communication is important when riding as a duo or group,so discussing expectations beforehand could help avoid any tragedies.
Communication is irrelevant. These are public tracks. Anyone has the right to be coming the other way, and you should set your expectations accordingly. I don't tend to ride that much anymore, because no one rides according to their visibility, and we've had people killed in our group accordingly (it doesn't have to be your fault to be killed).
Very true, we all take the risk riding on these tracks, you can't communicate with groups who you don't ride with!
@@timconnors The communication I am refering to is when some tracks may need the experienced rider sharing the traps that may be encountered with the newbie. Not all tracks are public and not all tracks are two vehicles wide. Occasionally a track that may have been shared with the public all of a sudden has an almost invisible fencing wire strands accoss the entrance. Shit can happen, so communication may be helpfull.

I've seen this kind of arrogance of others figuring they are the only ones on these roads and ride blindly around corners and hills in the others possible path. My friend actually had his bike destroyed and he can never ride again because of this exact incident in Idaho, few years back. There are many video's people post of themselves and their fellow riders doing it even here. Those making riding training video's on line need to enforce this teaching in their video's, because far too many people are doing it and your turn at having your trip, your bike, your life destroyed because of it might be next. Its not being harsh, its the fact that it ruins others enjoyment of riding.

@@adamadamhoney yeah I did a pretty good self assessment, waiting for pain to set in and going easy on the get up. I was concerned about old mate who hit me because we wasn't moving much other than standing over his bike.
I've still got pain in my wrist, shoulders and knees but seeing Dr's for those issues.

They're are some trails near me had a few close calls actually there has been so many crashes on that trail they put big mirrors around the corners and they work saved my butt a few times from running into someone trail looks awesome btw hopefully your back at it soon

I'm pretty lucky with full coverage from my insurance. I called them right away and they arranged the tow. I "should" hear from them by the end of next week about the bike and gear. I had my helmet, jacket and pants all covered by the insurance as well. I'm pretty sure he's going to have a fair whack of outgoings after this crash!

That could have been a LOT worse...... Sometimes, us older blokes need to take a reality check. 1) we are no longer young. 2) our reflexes are a LOT slower than they used to be... 3) we can't ride like we used to!

I had some knuckle dragger do this to me in Moab, UT about a decade ago. Luckily I had JUST enough room to get fully left. (they were out of control up a hill, blind corner) The couple was on a utility quad both had flip flops on, he had shorts only and she was in a bikini. She hit the brakes so hard he flew into her head knocking all the front teeth out of him and slamming her face into the handlebars. She stayed on the machine and he went flying. About 30 ft across the hard pack, sharp Moab sandstone. They were a bloody mess for sure. Luckily they didn't get anyone in my group behind me.
Holy crap Jas!! That's an insane impact!! I do believe if it wasn't for my protective gear the outcome would've been vastly different!

Timing was not on my side that day!! Like to pins coming together in the universe! The twin took a massive hit, cracked and compressed the frame!

Absolutely not. Learn how sound propagates and travels and you'll know that adage is straight BS in 99.99% of cases, including this one.
Unfortunately no, in these situations you would be very lucky to hear anything but wind noise from inside the helmet.
All you would hear is your own loud pipe.

Yer all good mate. Just riding with my brother and his mate on a regular loop ride that we do. Had a guy coming towards me cutting the corner on his bike well on my side nearly clipping my bars and sending me my brother and his mate off that where behind me lucky that didn't happen. It really makes you realise how easy things can happen. I hope you are ok mate.

Personally, I wouldn't have handled it that calmy considering if I was in the right. Hope he has insurance. I have a new bike, I would not be happy to have it written off, by someone being on the wrong side of the road. Idiotic to be on the wrong side of the road on a bend, and both the riders coming at you were! EDIT: Inexperience on that older riders part, possibly a returning rider or fairly new rider.

Happened to me as well. Ocala Florida. All the trails are 2 way some idiot weekend warrior going to fast for the line of sight slammed into me. I stopped and jumped away but he hit square on. Bone sticking out of his hand. I said to him, am i going the wrong way hete ( fully knowing it a 2 way trail) and the d a answers ya😂 sucks you broke your hand i said as we rode away
My YT has the HD flag on the playback....and I went into the quality settings and selected 720....but the video is absolutely terrible! So pixelated & blurring whenever they're riding along.

Well, Jesus healed me of stage 4 cancer in EVERY organ and system in my body with 20 days to live when I was diagnosed. 7 rounds of chemo and 18 of radiation and 3 years cancer free I will stick with Jesus….but will still enjoy my Africa Twin too😂👍
