Bless him. ❤️❤️❤️
well someone needs to do it and we all know that it's not gonna be brett and eddy xD
At least Olaf is the kind of friend that can fix the problem if the violin breaks. Anyone up to fund a cheap violin and one of those Godly Pillars for Olaf to actually try this?
I'm interested in knowing the result of Olaf's experiment.
Does the cheap violin sounds better after the experiment? Or more metallic? Or more muted?

well i know jackshit about instruments or acoustics but , metal is good at conducting sound waves , so i would be happy to watch the test
@@pyrodactyl2 well, metal is indeed good for transfering sound but, violin needs to be "free" , adding a metal rod across the instrument is really bad since it could mute the violin since it's metal and heavy and we already have a soundpost so the problem that they want to solve is already solved, and maybe the violin with the God pillar will sounds like a cello maybe...
Who is waiting for the “God Pillar” testing with Brett, Eddy and Olaf?

As a cellist, I can say from experience that different endpins sound different. Their claim that steel is brighter and tungsten is darker is spot on. The tone difference was night and day when I went from my stock steel pin to a brass Tone Acoustics pin. Endpins transfer the vibrations from the cello down to whatever the floor is, it looks like they are trying to make an equivalent thing for violins. I don't know if it would actually work or not but I can see how they got the idea.
Well sure, that would make sense in the context of bouncing the vibrations off the floor differently. Slightly less sense in the context of sticking it up an instrument that's played on the shoulder :-)

im late but yeah, they live separately. brett lives with his parents/family and goes to eddy’s house to film. now they’re in singapore(temporarily or permanently, no one’s sure) and are living together
Notice how the video never shows actual footage of somebody playing the violin with the rod inside? The selling point is that it'll improve the sound quality but then they just show how easy to install it is as if easyness was a key point of sound quality. And I don't think that Brett and Eddy cut out sound tests from the original video, I really think that they just decided not to show the actual audible result because it sounds crappy.
But even if they did film and show the sound quality, they could easily fake it: use another instrument; play the violin without the rod and claim it's inside; play poorly when it's normal and then play skillfully when the rod is allegedly installed, etc. Like, even if they'd show actual footage of someone playing, it's easily fakeable.
And another observation: I'm not sure because the images of the musicians fly by so quickly but some of the guys look very similar as if they used the same people several times and edited the footage so that the images go by quickly so you can't really recknognise the faces... I'm pretty sure that the comments and installing videos are fake and/or duplicates.

"Stop the holes"
~Brett 2020
"Stop the holes!"
-Twosetviolin, 2020
As a guitar luthier, this hurts my soul.
Soundwise, I'm not sure it'd do a whole lot. Certainly not any good. While I'm not a sound technician, my guess is certain sound frequencies would be slightly muted, while others would have an extra metallic overtone added to them. Would probably hurt sustain and resonance (how well the instrument holds sound)
The website seemed to market it as taking strain off of the wood, which is very important in a guitar in some very specific applications. Most guitars have a two-part steel truss rod in the neck, which has one part pushing against the strings and the other part pulling, which essentially stops the neck from warping or unseating itself from the force of the strings (around 60kg in a steel string guitar I believe?). However, the body of the instrument is already very deliberately curved, and the wood grain is placed in a way that makes any of this a ridiculous idea.
As for putting this into the instrument, I'm not sure how it would work in a violin, but in a guitar it would have to be extremely destructive. That joint at the butt of the instrument where the two sides join is one of the most difficult parts to get right when finishing the instrument, and the idea of drilling a whole in it to install this sounds pretty painful. Not to mention, as Olaf said, there are ribs inside the instrument to strengthen it and support the bridge (which has to take the strain of the strings), which would likely be in the way depending on the rib design.
Olaf is like that one guy in movies who always helps back the protagonists' asses up.

i absolutely love the fact that the rod reminds eddy of bubble tea straws. someone give these boys some bubble tea during the quarantine period 😭
There might be a benefit from this principle for very cheap violins. Although you probably should not do this yourself and the rod does not seem to be installed in a very good manner (come on, that might just rip out!), there may be some benefits to be gained:
What this basically does is to create a stiff continuation from the neck to the endpin (which does *not* touch the body of the violin otherwise (as olafs example does), which would drastically deteriorate resonance). This means that now the strings are not attached to the body of the instrument. Thereby:
→ If your instrument is not built well you might have a lot of resonance of the length of the instrument. This reduces the loudness of the instrument, since the string looses energy that is not picked up by the bridge. Also this can have a bad effect on the tone due to unequal dampening.
A rod just like this will lead to much less resonance over the length of the instrument, thus the instrument will get a better response.
→ If the strings are attached to the body, they will put pressure on the sound board, thereby compessing it a bit. A good violin maker will carefully select and carve his wood for a high amount of homogenity. But if you use ill suited wood, this might affect the resonance of the wood very badly. With such a rod, the pressure will be on the neck and the rod (and importantly on the joint between neck and rod, which is just not stable enough with this thing), resulting in less lateral pressure on the soundboard.
These things should not be a problem on a well built instrument, but a very cheap instrument might in fact profit from such a rod.
