Hi Elizabeth, I just got a provisional offer with the Home Office for an AO role while my pre-employment checks are under way. I got a 5 in Managing a Quality Service, and a 4 in Working Together and a 7 in the Strength questions. It was close but I made it. I'm also waiting to hear about an EO role with the DWP and an EO role with the Home Office. Thanks for all your tips.

My interview information only mentioned Behaviours and Experience. If it doesn’t mention strengths, does that mean it won’t be included or do they just not mention it?

Hi Caroline, if the job specification only mentions Behaviours and Experience then you are very unlikely to be asked Strength questions. The Interviewers can ask what they want in the interview but most interviews following the job specification. Sometimes, when you get invited to the interview they will change the criteria and include Strengths or even a new Behaviour so check this. Good luck with your interview.

I worked at the Home office for 6 years. Recently I have tried getting back in after taking time off travelling. I am currently on a reserve list for an EO position as well as an AO position.
I scored a 6 out of 7 and have been placed on a reserve list. There isn’t any consistency I’m afraid. I would have thought after scoring so well and having 6 years experience would have got me straight back in and not placed on some reserve list.
The recruitment service needs a restructure which I’ve been saying for years but nothing has happened. It puts people like me in a tough situation who have the years experience as well as the comps to back it up. Unfortunately it all comes down to who is sifting the applications, sadly they won’t take time of experience in a certain role which to me is backwards.

This sounds very disappointing. An overall score of 6 out of 7 would normally get your the job and often you can get offered roles whilst sitting in the reserve pool but it does depend on the size of the team you applied to. There is a great deal of competition for some roles and it sounds like you have been unlucky. It the interview the experience you have will have strengthen your Behaviour examples. I assume if you achieved a 6 out of 7 you had a Behaviour interview? Normally, this result would be enough to get the job so don't give up.

@@interviewskillsclinichighly disappointing. It was an AO role and it was just one behaviour which was delivering at pace which I scored a 6 out of 7. I am on a reserve list for this AO position until February next year. I’m also on a EO reserve list after I was considered a strong candidate after that interview but I didn’t get much more feedback other than that.
Hopefully something comes up and my luck changes.

Why aren't civil service interviews conducted in person in an office anymore? It is frankly lazy and rude not to meet candidates in such settings. The civil service has more staff than ever before so they do have the personnel.
The current way of interviewing discrimates against people who do not have the technology to undertake prerecorded interviews.

Hi Peter, did you have pre-recorded video interview or a live interview on Zoom? Unfortunately most organisations have moved interviews online post Brexit. I sympathise, personally, I think pre-recorded video interviews more difficult to do if you are only able to use your mobile but some candidates (particularly students) seem very comfortable using their mobiles for interviews. I know some candidates even prefer online interviews as it means they can apply for roles nationwide without having to travel to the location for the interview. I suspect it is just more cost-effective for organisations and I think unlikely to change.

I have an in person one on Friday and I really wish I was done online. It’s going to cost me more to do, I’ve had to take an entire afternoon off work to attend, and I feel my appearance will be judged more harshly in person.
