He didn't have a long enough career playing at a high level because of the injuries. 1993/1994-1998/1999 he averaged 19ppg, 4.7 rpg, 6.3 apg and 1.9 spg. Career 15.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 5 apg and 1.6 spg. After 2000, all of his numbers dropped .

Penny still my favorite player ever. I lived in Orlando during those days. They had the town lit up! Sad to see how ego's played into their breakup. Shaq was dominant, but Penny was a phenom and was more marketable. He became the crowd favorite and Diesel couldn't handle that. Hey man, me too! Any of us who were in Orlando at that time know Penny was THAT GUY. A hybrid of Magic and Michael, we LOVED that uniqueness to him. We'd talk about Penny all the time in school, Central Florida was filled with people wearing Penny jerseys, a lot of us cried when Orlando lost in the Finals to the Rockets. It was a special time! I was a fan through T-Mac's time, and Dwight's time, but Orlando never buzzed like it did in the mid 90s.
To his defense Orlando and the city shitted on Shaq saying he didn't deserve to be paid a record contract which would have made him the highest pay player or big man at that time Good thing the late great Jerry West knew what a dominant game changing big man looked like

I hated when Shaq left and went to the Lakers. I remember when NBA Live 97 came out for Playstation; I released Shaq off the Lakers and put him right back on Orlando. And that's coming from a guy that grew up in Chicago as a Bulls fan in the 90's.

But back in 96, I thought Shaq was crazy leaving Orlando because I thought they were the up-and-coming of Magic and Kareem and won 5 championships together. With knee issues for Penny, Shaq made the right move in the end, signing with the Lakers and winning 3 championships.

I'm from Memphis and Penny's grandma lived in my neighborhood. Used to play streetball with him in the 90s. The difference between a NBA player and regular people is hard to imagine unless you play against them.

But back in 96, I thought Shaq was crazy leaving Orlando because I thought they were the up-and-coming of Magic and Kareem and won 5 championships together. With knee issues for Penny, Shaq made the right move in the end, signing with the Lakers and winning 3 championships.
