- EN: The Energy Discovery Center is located in the former Tallinn power station.
It was here, in the old Tallinn power plant, that at the beginning of the 20th century, oil shale was first used to generate electricity in the public grid.
Tallinn City Power Station was completed in 1912 according to the design of architect Hans Hermann Schmidt. The station had three buildings: the engine house, or the current Energy Discovery Center, the boiler house, or the current Cultural Boiler, and the office building, where the hostel currently operates.
The power station started operating on March 24, 1913. Initially, the station was heated with coal, peat and wood, and from 1924 with oil shale. By 1938, the capacity of the Tallinn power plant was 19,200 kW. The station worked until 1979.
Some of the machinery in the engine house has been preserved to this day: former turbines and generators, 1929. a bridge crane manufactured by AS Ilmarine, a former switch wall and part of the original floor from the 1930s. There is also a small wagon on display that transported more than 320,000 tons of oil shale in the underground mines of Viru during 30 years.
The star exhibits of the display are the Tesla transformers in the Faraday cage and the Van de Graaff generator, which is also used for lightning and static electricity demonstrations every day in the discovery center.
ES: Energia avastuskeskus asub endises Tallinna elektrijaamas.
Just siin, vanas Tallinna elektrijaamas, hakati 20. sajandi alguses esimesena üldkasutatavasse võrku elektri tootmiseks kasutama põlevkivi.
Tallina Linna Elektri Keskjaam valmis 1912. aastal arhitekti Hans Hermann Schmidti kavandi järgi.

Hi Tiina!! Let me know pls is Estonian language close to Finnish? To me it sounds same and beautiful..🤩
Yes, Andy, exactly! 👌Estonian and Finnish are related languages. Both belong to the Finnish branch of the Finno-Ugric languages 🥰
Üsna huvitav vaatamine.
Tore teada 🙋👌
