  • In today's episode, we are travelling from Tauranga to Mt Ruapehu for a day of skiing. Mt Ruapehu - Whakapapa is the biggest Ski field in New Zealand and it's extra spectacular as it is an active stratovolcano at the southern end of the Taupō Volcanic Zone and North Island volcanic plateau in New Zealand. The Tongariro National Park in which the mountain is located is definitely worth a visit! We recommend coming here in summer or winter but make sure to check the weather conditions beforehand as the weather can change quite quickly.

Not sure if anyone's told you guys, but the entire Bay of Plenty region is littered in Volcanoes. Ruapehu and Tongariro are active volcanoes and Ruapehu erupts every 20 years or so. Lake Taupo and Lake Rotorua are also a type of Volcano called calderas. Just thought id mention it, cause you've technically gone skiing on an active volcano which is pretty cool.
Mauao/Mount Maunganui is a dormant/extinct volcano. Auckland is also built on a Volcanic field and has about 50 unique volcanic cones dotted around the entire city

Whakapapa has changed a bit since I was last there about 50 years ago! The roads were all gravel, and none of those car parks existed. 95% of all the buildings, etc, you see weren't there, either!
By the way, what did you think of Whittakers chocolate? It's expensive compared to Cadburys, but it's a much more pure (real) type of chocolate, and has much higher quality ingredients than Cadburys. You should definitely check out as much of their range as you can.

Good on you guys for mentioning the weather. Weather is everything at Ruapehu. High pressure is the time to be in those mountains.

The Mountains in the North aren't that big,but down South they are,you won't find any that big anywhere in the UK or Europe, maybe Switzerland.

Kia ora glen and mado hope all is well, great to see yous out and about enjoying what good weather we have or lack there of...hehe:) and fitting in quite well with the locals :) cool video and glen with a little practice youll get there mate, listening and observing is the key, i was snow boarding down in cardrona sth island last year and a aussie guy next to me who abit wet behind the ears also had no idea, i tried helping him out but being an aussie he wouldnt have it, didnt take my advice thought he was neat, that day i heard he ended up breaking his back.
.😮😂😜 anyway it might be just me but i think you guys brought a troll over with yous...lol so i sent him a hearty welcome to nz message, it didnt go thru youtube deemed it to be unsatisfactory content🤣😂...lol, take care much love from auckland❤

Kia Ora John Hope your having a wonderful day! :) awh sure the weather couldn't be any better john, it honestly feels like summer for us right now. the summer is going to be intense then if the heat continues this way haha. I need to stay consistent with the skiing if I want to improve though but I'm not sure that's going to happen. I need to listen more thought, Im terrible for that but I also wouldn't go extreme and take risks to cause any injuries like that auzzie man 😂 the accident sounds a bit extreme though! Awh really appreciate you responding to the troll, he's a guy from sri lanka and it seems he just can't face the fact that we stopped recording in Asia and have decided to record here in Boring New Zealand as he says. have a good one buddy!

    Hey-ya guys
Whakapapa is beautiful. This is the fun part, when you pronounce the name pronounce it with an 'F'. The 'Wh' in Whakapapa is pronounced as an 'F'. It'll feel naughty to say but it's fully ok 👌🏾
    Safe travels

    Ruapehu is pronounced roo-ah-pay-who
Whakapapa is pronounced fa-ka-papa with all "a" having the same sound. Remember all Maori words/names starting with a "wh" are pronounced with a soft "f". (yes that does make some sound like that four letter "f" word but you are not swearing if you use it in a Maori place name).

You have permission to say F*#ker when pronouning Moari words that start with "Whaka". Th "Wh" sound is F or Ph. It's fun😊.
But don't stress about pronouncing, Te Reo (The Language) academics alway say "give it a try, don't worry about getting it wrong".
The annoying thing is when born and bred Kiwis pronounce Te Reo wrong deliberately. You see this attitude in... certain regions.

In a Maori word wh is pronounced as an f. So whakapapa you say as fakapapa not wakapapa
