Jon Jones expects rematch vs. Thiago Santos | UFC 239 | ESPN MMA

- Jon Jones says his victory vs. Thiago Santos at UFC 239 was "extremely humbling." Jones also says he has a lot of work to do, but he is happy he fought the smart fight and took home the belt. Jones says he's sure there will be a rematch with Santos at some point. Jones was not surprised by the split decision as Santos "earned" the split decision. He expects Holly Holm to come back strong after her loss to Amanda Nunes. Jones says both of his feet and shins are swollen after the fight, which is why he needed to be carried off after the victory, and he says he apologized to the crowd after the fight because he wasn't able to deliver his normal dominant performance.

When Santos asked for the hug in the end. I became a fan
Jones was surprised by it. Thiago is a real one

You can argue Jon won 4-1 or 3-2 and argue santos won 3-2 I lt always seem the champion gets the advantage in close fights if you wanna beat the champ take him out and don’t let the judges decide anything
Yeah, you can't call that a robbery, it could've gone either way, I had Santos winning 1 and 5 while Jones getting 2, 3 and 4 but rounds 2 and 5 were too damn close
That mostly seems to be true if they don't wanna get the champ outta there. Had Tyron Woodley or DJ been in Jones' place, they would have given Twood and DJ the loss, imo.
Sometimes it works, look at Cejudo/DJ or Cruz/TJ
Guga Bastos I think you had to give jones it but santos pushed him farther then almost anyone ever
to be the champ you have to beat the champ, at best he tied with Jones. Not good enough
Can’t blame Jon for being tentative, Santos’s leg was fucked but so was his. And why charge in and get ko’d by crazy man Santos. Great fight rematch please
Best explanation
Lmfao terrible fuckin fight
Santos knee was from landing wrong much worse you idiot. Jones is just from leg kicks it happened every fight
@Diarmid O'Connor Santon is a risky crazy fighter, jj played smart
Why not go for the fucking takedown
Anybody that knows anything about fighting know that, that was a chess match. Both felt each other’s power and both were cautious of it. Both has hurt their legs and neither were willing to open themselves up too much against a dangerous opponent that could end the fight at any time. It was very very close but I did slightly edge it on rounds to Jones but mainly down to control of the fight but what a fight and Santos can walk away with his head held extremely high. Also, showed the rest of the division he is not just a slugger he’s got serious game! Scary dudes, respect to them both
100% good observation. Like your comment and happy to see good analysis. Respect to both.
Fight would’ve gone a lot different without the injury. There’s a big difference between fighting on a torn knee and fighting on a leg that’s getting kicked. Santos’ movement and power were completely nullified because he no longer had his movement. Even when he was kicking you could see his knee buckling. Santos showed so much heart. I wouldn’t be mad with the decision if Jones didn’t just coast the whole 5th round
Massiah Saiz jon caused the leg injury so stop saying if if if
@@Bleedzz Exactly, and Thiago compromised Jon's leg as well.

Jon tried one takedown and it got stuffed like a mf
@Roy Fokker His defense in the clinch was awesome. He avoided every reverse elbow that Jones throws during clinch breaks. I wonder how this fight would go if Santos had two knees
Jones saw what happened to Askren and decided to take the night off from takedown attempts
Thiago was fighting on one leg since round 1 and he gave Jon his toughest fight in his career. Give Santos credit great performance I even thought he should've won.
They both got hurt but to say he won is a little much
I think Santos should have won too, but this isn't Jons toughest fight lol. Take a look at Jones vs Vitor, Alex 1, DC 1, etc. This was Jon not on steroids, he's beatable.
A M Santos fought like a true warrior, but if you think he won - you’re dumb as a rock. It was a clear win for Jon. He was up on significant strikes, he scored a knockdown (possibly two), constantly advancing and going in, he did enough to secure the win.
Man, i agree that was a tough fight, but the toughest fight that jon had, was that first gustafsson fight. But this one was very good.
Guess Gustafsons first fight doesnt count 🤔

Jon won this fight. He won 2,3 and 4. He was pressing Thiago and was in control of the fight. Hats off to Thiago, he fought very well and raised his stock tonight even in a loss. As far as a rematch goes, I expect a Gusstafson 2 like performance from Jon in a rematch. But overall it was a good and technical fight.
Basically I agree
You could say jones looked tentative but it looked to me like he demonstrated his ability to fight at any pace he wants. He doesnt need to wait but he also doesnt need to rush. He can jump in but he can also snipe. And as he often has, he didnt even use his advantages of 2 good knees and superior wrestling. Dude looks more dangerous to me after this performance. He does what he wants and that always seems to get him the win.
To you people thinking thiago won, aside from his leg kicks to jon what did he really land? I’ll admit: I was sweaty, and nervous as hell during his fight! I was rooting for Ben, and Holly. Tonight was so stressful, and to see Ben get really hurt, and Holly get ko’d I realized anything is possible, and I really did not want Jon to lose, get hurt, or both. I’m glad he realized he needed to be humbled. Jon is a lot like someone I am close to, and I know exactly the mind set of being too confident, and the damage it can do to someone. Jon has a lot to lose, and I love to see him compete, however 3x’s in 7 months is a lot in such a short amount of time to be putting everything on the line. I realize he feels he has making up to do, also I feel he is right: it has a little to do with him sipping on his own cool-aid. I’m saying it again: I’m glad he was humbled tonight, and I hope this entire experience has actually humbled him, and I think when he gets back home, and over the next couple weeks, this experience will sink in, and Jon will allow himself to grow from it. I also really love how he knows exactly who put him in this, and has watched over, and protected him. Jon is a great man, and he has showed us all he is only human. That takes courage, and humility. Kirk Landau nahh bullshit and i hate Jones.. its Santos he wasnt scared of Jones like other fighters one mistake and Jones could of went to sleep he aint declining just fighting smarter technical af
@@Devin_MMA He has submitted one black belt and that was Vitor Belfort you dickhead lol. There's no Jon walking over Santos on the ground dickhead lol.
Respect to Jones we all know it was close fight but the guy really fighting everything they throw at him 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
He’s the goat for a reaso
Kirk Landau wtf are you talking about. Are you new to MMA? There’s never been another fighter as good as jones therefore the goat. Only Anderson Silva and gsp come close. He’s gone through every light heavyweight they throw at him. Respect greatness stop being a loser
It was a close fight, could've go either way, 3-2 Santos or 3-2 Jones are not abusrd results, one of the closest fights in recent memory, closest fight of the year for sure, I would be interested for them to run that back, Santos fought brilliant, and he did that on a bad knee
I mean it's not the best way to win a fight, but Jon walked through like every heavy punch Santo threw. His chin is pretty fucking legit.
Fa everybody sayn Jon Jones lost watch the right again he had more significant strikes was more accurate . Thiago missed alot of those strikes and Jones Knock him down a
People buggin lol
He definitely could of went for takedowns or focused on kicking the knee early after seeing Thiago hurt, it's true. I kept whispering in my head "focus the knee!, go for takedown!" lol. But regardless Thiago was a true warrior, a beast in fact. What a fight! Was totally awesome to watch. Jones walked out unable to walk basically. Btw awesome interview, gotta love current Jones and his mindset.
Great fight Santos...
You gave a great display of your talent. Love to see the rematch!
Would be helpful if during the rematch, judges were assigned that weren't blind.
He doesn’t look like someone who just come out a 5 round fight. I don’t get why people. Request immediate rematch when the number 1 contender didn’t do enough to finish the champion.
@Ryan Morgan Damn right he wasn't the same.... he didn't test positive.
because he was the closest person to beating jones ever basically lol..
how does that not deserve one, gus got a rematch so should santos lol. he would have won if he didint hurt his knee. the only other fight that should maybe happen instead is DC jones 3
Ryan Morgan Jon hit Santos with an elbow and dropped him even if he got right back up .
JazzysnaK Gus got the rematch after couple fights. Not immediate rematch
Shouldn’t be an instant rematch, it was a close fight but overall jones won
overall gtfoh
That COKE DRIP ain't no joke 😂🤘🏿
Good one!
If this wasn't a championship fight, Santos would've edged out the split decision. If he wasn't injured, TKO or unanimous decision. Santos is a hungry beast, JJ has become complacent.
Jon was a bit out of it today... Didn't even take thiago down once
That's right!!
Jon likes to prove a point. Trade with tough strikers and beat them at their own game.
@@da3v1ls93 agree... But tonight that wasn't always the case.. It was like Jon was just playing calculated.. He knew he had the fight standing up.. So he decided not to throw in.. Post comeback Jones has that previous killer instinct a bit less
thats what happens when your off the ped
@@DerSpielfuehrer don't think so... Just he is ageing now.. Jones used peds maybe but the guys he beat were on roids... All of them... So.. Even case
Looks like Jon has come full circle. Hard headed young men have to learn and be humbled the hard way. I can see that his father has probably been a major catalyst in that seeing that he has steered away from alot of the nonsense he was getting into and is embracing a more humble, and spiritual path instead. Good for him. I am sure his father was proud of the way he presented himself post fight and in this interview.
Damn. Jones surprised and impressed me with his candor and gracious remarks. Wow
Yep a rematch will be good. I think Jones will break Santos down in the next match.
Man, I would've loved to see Thiago Santos and Alexander Gustafson fight!
Hopefully Gus is just taking some time off and not fully retired
If Santos got a split decision with one leg.. what would have happened if he had two ?
Stfu you casual mma math doesn't work. I can say the same thing if Jon had his worst night what would've happened if Jon actually fought smart and took Santos down?
@@DaFlash47 um hey moron... He was winning the fight and started looking as soon as he got hurt. There's no math there just reality..
Dumbass 😆😆
I’m proud of how Thiago hugged Jones smiling after the fight. That’s champ shit right there 👏🏼❤️
Fuck a rematch..Jon will straight up smoke Santos in a rematch. Corey Anderson deserves a title shot next.
