The incomplete/closed Mimar Sinan station of M9 line was opened on the 30th of August, 2024. Thus, line M9 becomes a complete line between Ataköy and Olimpiyat Stadı (Olympics Stadium) without any closed station.
It's really weird to see each line making its own life without many interconnections or will to create a coherent network. Especially M4 and M5 fully on their own without any crossover with others metro lines. And why they have waited until 2014 to finally connect M1 + M2 metro lines ? Back in 2007, if you want to travel between line M1 and M2, you need to : - Leave M1 at Aksaray and taking T1. - Leave T1 at Kabatas and taking F1 to finally join M2 Taksim station. - Or even longer before T1 north extension : leaving T1 at Karaköy, taking F2 to Beyoglu and taking T2 to Taksim. x)
M1 and M2 stayed separate because of the golden horn. The terrain surrounding the golden horn is very hilly, different from the bosphorus. It was difficult to build a train line and the only solution was building a bridge, which they did

Great video, still completely ignores the fact that Istanbul had an extensive network of trams until Fatih and Beşiktaş (very similar to the “nostalgic” tram in Taksim) up until late 1950’s when the service was shut off due to being seen as “antique” and “slow”, and that was a trend around the world… They realized with the massive growth of the city, metro lines were the solution to go. With all the geographical, political and economic challenges; it is nothing short of amazing how in 30 years all the infrastructure has been bulit and serves the city with reliable transportation.

great job! there is only one thing. even though the metrobüs line is technically not a railway line, it works like and listed as a railway line. it has its own massive road. also it maybe is the most used transit in istanbul.
in a normal day, you wouldnt need any public transportation in istanbul in that century and you could walk anywhere but that way was quite exhausting and unwalkable even today.
56 tram lines were built in Istanbul until 1956. Later, the government began to think that road lines were more important and removed the tram lines and replaced them with trolleybus and bus lines. They later realized they had made a mistake.

As someone from Istanbul, I can definitely confirm that Istanbul really is the center of Metros. Has a history of tramways since 1875. I live between the M4 Kozyatağı and Marmaray Suadiye stations. There are always signs on bridges and construction site walls about "how Istanbul is the city with most Metros under construction at the same time in the world". And topped off with an image of the current mayor İmamoğlu. I remember using Marmaray sometimes, the last time I used it was on a Friday, in May or June. The M8 Metro line will yet again probably cross very close to my house. And last of all, congratulations. This was an amazing video teaching me and other viewers the history of raillines in Istanbul. Video posted in 8th of July, this comment written on the 28th... Since the last 20 days, the video has 49.620 views and 1.9K likes. Good job. You earned a like and a subscribe. Keep the good content up and I'll see you later. Have a fantastic summer. Fun fact: The trains of Marmaray move at a maximum speed of 60-80 kph.
We had two different railroads on the same line as Marmaray (Haydarpaşa - Gebze and Sirkeci - Halkalı commuter lines) and they were the most important transport lines of Istanbul. Marmaray is just a renewal of these two lines and connecting of them with an undersea railroad so I think you should have mentioned these railroads as well. Still, a great video. Thanks for the effort.
Seoul metro is so convenient with its intersection with all the lines. I was so surprised when I used it for the first time. I hope soon Istanbul will be like that and we will not have to use cars and other road transports which is time consuming and crowded.

The BRT line (Metrobus), although not a rail line, plays a crucial role in this network and is usually included in travel maps. So some seemingly isolated lines here are actually connected by BRT, but it's admittedly not an efficient mode of transport at all.

Hello guy.
As a Turk person from İstanbul Thanks for this video.UA-cam has got a lot of channel about rail systems but this channels hasn't got video about İstanbul metro system. Thanks to you, many of our foreign brothers and sisters outside of Turkey learned a lot about Istanbul's transportation system. It is also a source of pride for our rail systems to develop all of a sudden. However, I found a problem in this video. Except for the problem, there is no problem in the video, from the station names to the quality of the video, and this makes the video a talented job. Stay respectful :)
The incomplete/closed Mimar Sinan station of M9 line was opened on the 30th of August, 2024. Thus, line M9 becomes a complete line between Ataköy and Olimpiyat Stadı (Olympics Stadium) without any closed station.
New Info for foreign guests: Extension of M3 line to Kayasehir Merkez from Basaksehir Metrokent was opened on the 8th of April 2023.
It's really weird to see each line making its own life without many interconnections or will to create a coherent network. Especially M4 and M5 fully on their own without any crossover with others metro lines. And why they have waited until 2014 to finally connect M1 + M2 metro lines ?
Back in 2007, if you want to travel between line M1 and M2, you need to :
- Leave M1 at Aksaray and taking T1.
- Leave T1 at Kabatas and taking F1 to finally join M2 Taksim station.
- Or even longer before T1 north extension : leaving T1 at Karaköy, taking F2 to Beyoglu and taking T2 to Taksim. x)
There will be 2 lines in the future that will connect M4 and M5, look at Wikipedia
Historical port appeared at Yenikapı Station M1 construction started from Aksaray - Yenikapı in 2000 It could be completed in 2014
M4 line will merge with M5 at Sabiha Gökçen Havalimanı (Airport)
M4 and M5 lines are connected by Marmaray suburban rail station in Üsküdar and the metrobus line in Altunizade
M1 and M2 stayed separate because of the golden horn. The terrain surrounding the golden horn is very hilly, different from the bosphorus. It was difficult to build a train line and the only solution was building a bridge, which they did
Çekmeköy - Samandıra Extension of M5 line was opened this noon, on the 16th of March, 2024. Only Sancaktepe Şehir Hastanesi station in this extension is closed, as it is still under construction, but all other stations are now opened.
Hello, an immigrant from korea to turkey here, i have 3 things to say;
1. Seeing how recent were those made makes me feel younger
2. If we count future lines, i can tell that this is becoming like my own city, Seoul
3. If you ever wonder why are the lines so curvy, dont forget how hilly is istanbul

As of Feb.2023, all lines expected to put on service (except M3 and M11 extensions) are built successfully, and open for use.
Metrobus should be on the map as well. Although it is not rail it has a dedicated line and 7/24 running service with seconds of intervals.
metrobus is not a Metro thing
I find it strange they make a metor line in the 1800s then forget about it for more than a century
in a normal day, you wouldnt need any public transportation in istanbul in that century and you could walk anywhere but that way was quite exhausting and unwalkable even today.
56 tram lines were built in Istanbul until 1956. Later, the government began to think that road lines were more important and removed the tram lines and replaced them with trolleybus and bus lines. They later realized they had made a mistake.
Amazing what they have managed to build in such a short period of time!

Istanbul Metro has an interesting history. I'm waiting for other videos!

Fun fact: The trains of Marmaray move at a maximum speed of 60-80 kph.
there was actually tram lines that were removed in 1960s
addition to the old tram lines, all of the marmaray was there except the intercontinental tunnel, all the way to the start of 20th century
M7 Yildiz and M8 opened just this week
Seoul metro is so convenient with its intersection with all the lines. I was so surprised when I used it for the first time.
I hope soon Istanbul will be like that and we will not have to use cars and other road transports which is time consuming and crowded.
Oh yes Seoul metro is epic!!

asian side is underdeveloped, but esenyurt, beylikduzu metro systems must be built in there, far european side of istanbul
I see you include tramways too, is there any reason that you didnt mention the old tram network of the city, and also the old banlieue routes. Your video does a great job covering the modern metro system of istanbul but I wish you did a better job covering the history.

Kötü yanı bu yorum sadece metrolara işlemiyor. “...çünkü sen Treni kaçırmış bir milletin çocuğusun”

The BRT line (Metrobus), although not a rail line, plays a crucial role in this network and is usually included in travel maps. So some seemingly isolated lines here are actually connected by BRT, but it's admittedly not an efficient mode of transport at all.
