Tim Hart - vocals, guitar, dulcimer
Peter Knight - violin, mandolin, vocals, organ, bass
Ashley Hutchings - bass, vocals

2 nd Steeleye album different sound but still excellent Enjoy!
Hah don't worry oldies, there are some young guys like me who are jamming to this in 2021
good on you
This old lady still loves them at 65 in 2024.
i am75. the first group we got was pentangle, then fairport and steeeleye. i looked at an old program guide from the philly folk fest and saw that i missed fairport at a dinnertime concert. the concert in 73 was the last time i saw my friends jim croce and maury muelheisen
Listening to this music brings back a free, contented time of my life. The baby that I rocked in my arms to "False Knight on the Road" is now a 46-year-old man. I relish the legacy that this group has given me.
My son wasn't 6 weeks old when I sang it to him along with maddie at the phila folk fest in 1987.
This album has quite a lot of significance for me. I still have my original vinyl copy. I met my husband to be on an archaeological dig in the 1970s. He was all tanned and singing songs from this album while digging. It was one of the happiest times of my life. Also I did not know about English folk music up until then. In spite of coming from an Irish family I did not like traditional music and thought it old fashioned and embarrassing. This really introduced me to a whole new world of music that I realised I liked after all. (P.S. John Renbourn has just died. RIP. A folk guitar hero but also great on medieval and blues).
***** I'm glad you finally got to see and hear Renbourn. He was one of the best guitarists and Pentangle was a great band.
+Helen Trope A nice memory to share Helen. There is a great beauty and honesty to this album and the music so lacking in stuff today. Ps. Did you discover anything interesting in the archaeological dig?
+maxwellfan55 I was only there for 2 weeks. It was the site of a Roman town (Wroxeter/Uriconium) so there was quite a lot in the way of coins, animal bones & post holes denoting where buildings had been. It just gave me such a kick to be the first to uncover things that no one had set eyes on for nearly 2000 years. It helped to build up a picture of the history of the place. It wasn't a new dig so there was already a great wall and a hypocaust. My favourite find was a coin (a dupondius) of the emperor Antoninus Pius. It was heavy and in great condition. You could see his image clearly. I asked to keep it. Coins are used for dating but after that most of them end up in some box in some museum storeroom never to be seen again. I wasn't allowed to keep it. The strange thing was that I went to Liverpool to do a degree afterwards and met a few people who had visited the site in Shropshire that Summer. I didn't know them at the time of course but it was like a fateful place for me. I did meet Mary Beard (the now famous classicist) there. She was only about 18 or 19 at the time.
Helen Trope Fascinating, thank you for your reply.
Steeleye Span brings out the best in people! Lovely story!
Steeleye Span is my most favorite band of any genre of all time! If I had only one group I could listen to for the rest of my life it would be Steeleye Span.

Thankes
You are welcome
Thanks for the play list
"Lovely on the Water" by far my favourite song on this album.
Such a haunting ballad and Maddy's voice in such top shape and absolutely beautiful vocal range.
As Italian, I'm glad to say that this is MARVELLOUS MUSIC
Still listening since 1971
Me too. :)
This beauitiful music has been cast aside by TV, where all you can hear is hip hop, rap, pop, but it is a shame as clearly many people love this traditional English music and it is an important part of our heritage. Thank goodness for the Internet.
Magenta: you should buy another TV, on my TV one can find all kind of music
tv is a propagandist's dream machine. thank god for the internet!
Well at Uxbridge Folk Club we still have lots of good acts Julie Felix soon check it out
Hip hop and rap are modern folk music. That said, I believe an appreciation of all kinds of music that people make to tell stories, (whether happy or horrible) about themselves is so key to understanding the human condition. My children and I listen to playlists that include anything from Steeleye Span to Public Enemy. Fairport Convention to The Wu Tang Clan. We do fine. 😊
Don Villella rap is crap and nothing to do with folk. Its music for rootless dumbed down urban masses
Saw Steeleye Span in Leeds last week. I've grown up with their music. My Mum & Dad are both Folkies. Many memories in this album. Timeless treasure.
'The Lark in the morning' blew my mind way back then as it does now.
graceful, ethereal, otherworldly, magnificent!
I dearly love this album.
Bought this as a student in the 1970s.
Boys of Bedlam was interesting when you were tripping.
One of a host of great albums around in those days.
Count them, that's only 5 musicians! Damn! what a treasure. Favourite album of theirs since day one.
Thank you for the music and the memories, a much nicer time!! Thank you Steeleye Span, you have Spanned time to bring a love and sense of well being to this age of uncertainty!!!
I got this in Amsterdam 1972, listening in the store! So exciting to hear “another Fairport,” as it struck me then, knowing the Hutchings connection.
I will be 66 very soon and it is a mystery why I overlooked such a GEM and that wonderful music. The vocals are beyond this world.
Me too, and I bought this album in 1973, a long time together, and still a good listen.
The blacksmith, the king and lovely on the water are the best. Great record!
En los puertos de Inglaterra me acompaña está música con un buen té en las manos.
"The King" is the most beautiful song here. However the rest of the album is excellent too. Thanks for this gem.
One of my favorite Steeleye Span albums, especially "Cold Haily, Windy Nigh" & "Boys of Bedlam"

This is one of my favourite albums of the seventies. I was into all the rock/blues sounds around at the time but to hear the clear strong voices of Maddy Prior and Steeleye Span was such a lovely change. I've still got the vinyl too and bought the cd to play whenever I feel like a good sing song to myself when I'm doing my ironing!
Me too, saw them at Wheeley Festival yonks ago, still have their vinyl's, this being my favorite.
My new favorite album.
This has to be my favorite line up of Steeleye Span. Can't get enough of this album. Thanks for the upload.

face it folks, this is easily as good as the magnificent beatles stones doors; what have you! AND as easily important.
My all time favorite folk Album.
So great. In every aspect. The bass!
Playing ensemble linke one, without drums. And the futuristic electric folksound.the instrumental-so genial!!
A brash Telecaster and 100's years of song. Turn it up.
A Lost Gem & Hidden Treasure. 🦇🥀🌹
Only to those who were or are unaware.
love ashley hutchings bass playing
Just pure class, my favourite folk band of all time, fair fairport a very close 2nd
Agreed. Maddy. Sandy is beautiful too but yes!
Thank you. Dealing with the death of a family pet, and cannot fall asleep with something to distract my mind. Remote for my boombox isn't working, so no radio, and no internet at home, so I needed something I could download and leaving playing all night.
I have no idea how this got on my watch history but I like it!
God acts in mysterious ways my friend*^^*
discovered this aged about 10 as one of my friends older siblings records that we'd devour whatever the genre - had an amazing eclectic mix of folk, rock, reggae, ska etc n love all of it, but singing harmonies to SS and Fairport walking the dogs is a wicked memory as kids - still love it all!
Ah, memories... in my opinion the best album Steeleye Span made. Loose yet oddly tight with nicely arranged three and four part harmonies, Maddy Prior's voice is rarely less than perfectly pitched & is suited to these very traditional tunes more than to any other type of song. strangely, listening to this makes me want to find the Ozark Mountain Daredevils next. I had thought maybe something from Nova Scotia, but the Appalachian type of music played by the OMDs has a lot of roots in Scots and Irish Gàidhlig music... well it mwkes sense to me!
Totally agree - it was my first Steeleye album - remember it like yesterday - 1975 I bought it.
Magnífico. Tengo casi todos los discos de este grupo.
Yo acabo de descubrirlos (tras descubrir que fueron producidos por Ian Anderson de Jethro Tull creo que en un disco) y me han fascinado :D
i love this album!
Just lovely . Thankyou
Where has this heartful English music gone..?
Still being sung in some folk song clubs. Also the Folk Dance and Song section of the Camping and Caravan Club have lots of singing. I'm biased as I sing. :)
You can hear it five times a day if you listen well enough in the UK.
***** Here, here! So great to hear this music.
I hear you. I Am a Scot but love this music.
Dudley Middleton We need to bring this music back.
The best british folk-rock Group and Maddy Prior is the best female singer in England scene
Sorry to disagree with you... but in my opinion this award might go to Sandy Denny.
Goodhand123 absoluteley she was the queen of folk and always will R.I.P first lady of folk
no, that was Fairport with Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick
+danilo corona Along with TREES, I luv both
Where has the electric clatter gone? I miss this sound
The lead/bass guitar combination always gives steeley span a signature of strong clear counterpoint to the lead vocals. Unique style!
It was Bob Glass of Collet's Record Shop who guided my interest through the British folk revival. How eagerly I awaited, in the US, his shipments, one of which included this great album. Hats off not just to the musicians and the singers but to those who shared all this great music.
Did he send you any Shirley Collins or Anne Briggs,if not give them a try beautiful I have a large collection of early British folk , Blackwater side by Anne Briggs is just amazingly beautiful
Absolutely brilliant! Sheer genius! "Rave on to me" :-)
AWESOME ACOUSTIC ALCHEMY !
Excellent, merci...
Still have my original copy with hessian sleeve.bought it 2 days after its release from HMV in London’s Oxford Street.great daze....
Just getting into the tunes. I’m a heavy rock fan in my early 50’s who’s starting to develop a real liking for the band! Missed out big style in the past.
Good man. the good news is steeleye are awesome all the way up to 1979. ignore the 80s
but oddly they get good again in the 90's.
and they still play in the uk ;)
Always loved this!
Yeah! Rave on!
I love it
Uma preciosidade dos anos setenta.
"Female Drummer" is a cracking track.
Michael Igoe Damn Skippy! Listen thru headphones, check out the bass, and tell me it's not one of the top 3 S/S tracks.
cold haily windy night, that poor deserter soldier...war is aweful
So awesome…!
Sensacional
First heard SS in 1973 at My Father’s Place in Roslyn New York. Bought Below The Salt on vinyl and still play it. Been listening to a lot of SS in past year. I just found a video of Rainy Hailey Nights by the Imagine Village, a giant ensemble of musicians as recorded on Joules Holland and now I find it was on Please to See the King album both great recordings
Maddy Prior - vocals, spoons, tabor, tambourine
Tim Hart - vocals, guitar, dulcimer
Peter Knight - violin, mandolin, vocals, organ, bass
Ashley Hutchings - bass, vocals
Martin Carthy - vocals, guitar, banjo, organ

I. have never come across this album before I've not heard it through yet but it sounds good as one would expect of steel eye span
Very interesting year
The Sgt Pepper of Steeleye Span, lovely opening and closing songs (Blacksmith & Lovely on the Water), those in between are not bad either.
Sgt Pepper ? What tosh , young man !!
More like Captain Sensible really
this album goes so unbelievably hard. /m/
Jigs: Bryan O'Lynn / The Hag with the Money..that's some kick-ass music
Good people pray heed a petition
Your attention we beg and crave
And if you are inclined for to listen
An abundance of pastime we'll have...........great stuff along with Pentangle, Fairport Convention, Trees......love it all :-)
They included Rave On at the end? Wtf?! Thanks for posting btw, loved the rest of it.
dragoncats the "extended CD version..."
good......................................................................................
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Bands like this were few years ago, and I fear as time progresses this type of music - electric folk - may fade into obscurity! Yes there will always be faithful supporters, but groups like Steelye Span may not be as well known or as long lasting.
Beautiful modal harmonies, no band has achieved what they achieved (not even Fairport in it's heyday with Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny)
What about The Pentangle? I like them more than Fairport.
The Lark in the Morning harmonies are amazing.
Some bands can change personnel and sound basically the same. The personnel changes in SS after Hark The Village Wait led to a very different sound. Martin Carthy was an odd recruit to the ranks of electric guitarists but I like his somewhat idiosyncratic technique - some great riffs ! His harsher vocal style also gives more edge to songs like False Knight On The Road.
Sounds even better with a finger in your ear :-)
How many folks singers does it take to change a lightbulb? Four, one to change it and the other three to stand around singing how good the old one was.
They asked the bass player but he couldn't reach high enough . . .
Fug Off.
toask that...and to have the majestry say, yes it does...come!
if I said I'd marry you it was only to try you...so bring your witness not & I'll not deny you.
Surely men don't lie just to get a jump? Thank Christ women are so honest.
Long long time ago

What information do you need ask and I will try and help have a good day
8 lost souls.
My OkCupid profile says "Message me if you can sing like Maddy Prior". Unlikely that anyone can, but I did end up finding someone who may be willing to do some of these songs.
curioso ascoltare "rave on" a capella .....suonata anche dalla nitty gritty dirt band!

I visited stonehenge in june 72
I was born in England and every year my parents drove us from Essex to Cornwall for our annual vacation, we always stopped very early AM at Stonehenge, in those days there was absolutely no commercial aspect there, we stopped on the grass by the side of the road and my brother and I would run to the stones across the totally unfenced field, no gift shops, no fences, no car park, only a field with large stones and the rising sun.
I am not too up on all the band members here accept Maddy Prior and Tim Hart. Never so well known here in USA as in England.
I do know Maddy Prior is still around but that Tim Hart passed away some years ago now. Can someone please let me know if the OTHER band members are still around or not? Thank you.
Yes the others are around still.
Maddy is still in Steeleye span with a very different lineup.
Ashley Hutchings and Martin Carthy are still productive.
Peter Knight left Steeleye about 7 or 8 years ago. He plays with his own band "Gigspanner" as well as solo work and other collaborations.
@@geoffbaker4452
Thank you Geoff for your reply.
Is it Tim Hart who does all the male lead vocals on this album?
+Øystein Håvard Færder Martin Carthy sings lead in the second part of Boys of Bedlam.
Nein, natürlich Martin carthy
All the male lead vocals are by Martin Carthy.
This is the best album. Why did they add a drummer?
Rick Kemp, the bass player on the albums after this one, said he pushed for the addition of drums because it freed him from the duties of keeping time, which allowed him to play more melodically. Click on "Commoners Crown" if it's on this page and listen to what he does at the beginning of the first song.
tx Drums add a something to throw out the chappy old finger in the ear folk shite.
@@1tbo
The first album has drums.
Its the Art of ashley hutchings. And of the ensemble AS a whole. So it has more rhythm AS an inner quality of all members than any of the Albums with drums. Thats sheer mature excllence. Communication of the highest level!!! Enjoy that seldom quality
@@1tbo I prefer the steeleye without the drums. Nothing wrong with the drum lineup, but man Kemp kills it on Below The Salt! That's what I love about it, rocking sound where the only the guitars and bass are "percussion"
Their best album I reckon. Sound is really original but traditional at the same time. Not necessarily one for the folk purists.
himalaya
I have this album and I could do without the Buddy Holly number. Save that for the Odds and Sods record.
How come 'Rave On' isn't on the record? Only good song on this album...selling my mint copy of this if anyone wants it...click the link for my Discogs page in the upper right corner of the screen on my homepage on UA-cam here...
Still have it for sale, let me know please
sold it

Nice album. But "Rave On", is that really also recorded in the 70's? That track sounds so 80's. Kinda out-of-place on this album
Øystein Håvard Færder Wasn't on my vinyl back in the day...
the restricted channel is a bit of shit still I guess you feel you are the keeper., my vinyl is quite tired. best wishes, f
This is my favourite Steeleye album. Like many, I thought this the best line-up. I hated when they got a drummer - wrecked it for me.Rave On wasn't on the original album. It might be a bit of fun at a gig but I don't think it enhances the album - far from it!
It is there because of David Bowie a chance studio meeting
This was my first steel eye span album I bought in 1974 at bradlees on the discount rack , I have many of their albums even have the logo from sails of silver tattooed on my chest
