I just got a 1993 Today, had it for about a month and I'm getting about 47-48 mpg. Maybe an automatic is less effiecient? Mine's a manual, and I do try to coast downhill and shift early to avoid high rpms. As you mentioned the high rpms do hurt it; I only got 44 mpg when I had to make the long drive home after getting it from the port.
The one you have here is one of the nicest I've seen in the short time I've been looking for them on youtube. Mine's a little rough around the edges but as you mentioned more than once this one here is super clean. Really nice car.
