By lining it up since 4 will be a hole number so 4.0 and 3.5 line it up you can do 3.0+7.0+4.0+3.5=17.5cm so the whole numbers are single digits you understand now

Darling, 3 is a whole number and 4 is a whole number, .5 is a fraction of a whole number. So, add both whole numbers will equal to 7, then add the .5 which will equal to 7.5.
