  • Hi everyone! in this video il show you the correct chip to use on your Dapol HST 6 pin PCB to fix non-functioning lights which seems to be a frequent issue ive run into lately so i suspect a few of you might also have the same issue, good luck!
The SMD chip i used here is.... SOT-23 (BAT54C) you can get them here... amzn.to/3ekTHH9

Another great video. I don’t know how you do it. I thoroughly recommend you for fixing locos as you know. Cheer’s Roger

Apart from this fix working it gave me the confidence to fix my other Dapol locos with blown lights that font have this chip. Other Dapol locos use 2 diodes. Locos like the Dapol class 86 and class 156. So I purchased 500mW 0.5W Zener Diode BZX55C 20V. I purchased a pack of 20 from a well known auction site for £1.99 free postage. The locos require two diodes but the same process worked. So thanks again for posting this vid.
I should make a vid but don't have the time or kit. But just as easy as this fix.

Thats great youve managed to fix so many different types, i did suspect Dapol used similar PCB's between their locos, onwards and upwards really 👍, next you'll be fitting lights to locos without lights! 👍👍

Interesting video. You should have been able to use your desoldar pump to remove the faulty device, even if space is limited, it doesn’t need to be directly in contact. Have you tried desoldar braid instead?
About the “chip”, SOT means ‘small outline transistor’, which is just the size and shape of the package, in this case it’s actually two diodes in the three-leg package, with the negative ends at the single pin. The KL3 marking is a BAT54C dual Schottky Diode, so you didn’t actually use a different part type.
    Keep making these interesting videos.

Brilliant fix :) There's one further issue though... the HSTs only ran with one tail light lit until about 1983! (Possibly this changed at the same time they were recategorised from Class 253/254 to Class 43?)

@@RoamingAdhocrat it could be they are modelled for the take over period when the lights changed as you say, either way these lights are wired how Dapol wired them so im happy to keep them just as they are for the time being 👍

@@ThisWayWorksTWW I've got to figure out how to deactivate one tail lamp on the EFE Class 17 and I'm pretty sure it involves taking a pair of wire cutters to an injection-moulded light pipe

@@RoamingAdhocrat yeah that might be the case, or maybe use some black acrylic paint on the lense, saves going into the loco 🤞

Excellent video. Thanks I can finally fix my NR hst. This process also worked for repairing my 26/27/56. I'm sure the 156 are the same so they'll be the next under knife. Strangely the 22/35/73 have always been faultless.
Does anyone know what components (diodes) are required to fix the Dapol 86. I know the components to swap out but unsure of type to replace with. Also anyone know how to repair the lighting on the Dapol class 50s as they have the same fault?
I don't have much luck or hope with Dapol locos. All other makes are fine but on my basic DC layout, as soon as they derail and short out. Boom. Blown lights.
Great video. Thanks for posting. Keep up the good work.

Sorry i cant help with the 50 or 86 as i dont have any of them so cant advise the components you'd need, it would be great if someone else chimed with the info 👍

Update; Sadly the Dapol class 156 use the same equipment as on there class 86.so can't use this method sadly. I'll order a selection of diodes (different voltages) and see how I get on at some point. I was going to get 12v but then thought, maybe I should get higher?.
This method fixed all my locos that have this transistor. Just one of the class 26 was not repairable. Im guessing its LED were blown as they failed to work when swapped onto another chassis.
But this vid fixed so many of my locos. I wonder if the replacement transistor are more hardy than the originals. Time will tell but thanks again for a great video. So nice to see my NR hst will full lights.

@@th0rgrim if you can read anything from the top side of the old smd chips you think could be bad that will probably help identify the chips 👍👍

@@ThisWayWorksTWW Thanks I'll try that. I was originally going to get 12v but though they may blow easily. So then though 100v. But I'll try the 16 or 20. Thankfully there dead cheap (though will still have to wait till payday :-( before I can give it a go).
