@ 3:52, That's my mothers grave, we are related to Maria TallChief, my mother was her niece. A lot of my relatives are buried there, so will I be one day. I remember when I was little, me and my Grandmother would visit the cemetery and I remember asking her why some of the pictures were gone on some of the graves, she told me people were shooting them out. So, it's not a recent thing, they have always been that way for as long as I can remember. Thanks for the great video, makes me want to go for a visit...........

Thank you again for your gentle and respectful video of this resting place. The desecration of these graves photos made my heart hurt and caused tears. Whoever worked their evil on these graves will pay for it one day, the Almighty will see to that! The peace in that lovely resting place was palatable as you strolled among the graves. Even the cattle & calves added a peaceful charm! Thank you again for your respect and consideration for these souls gone into eternity~

There are many people who are interred into this cemetery and they experienced some very evil things done to them. Many of them were murdered. Whoever did this it seems highly disrespectful and sad. It's the only cemetery I have ever been in where photos were defaced like that. Thanks for watching Stitchy.

Rhett, I had visited with one of the former Chief's of Osage Nation a while back. He had told me that there has been a lot of vandalism on the pictures at Gray Horse by bullets. As you enter the cemetery, you are passing by the ceremonial camp grounds and one weekend in June, there will be a big pow wow ceremonial dance. It's been a few years since I've attended one of the ceremonial dances. During the ceremonial weekend, they will feed everyone there with Native Osage dishes. You do have to be invited to attend one of the feedings and it is custom to be invited to the ceremonial dance as well, unless you personally know someone in the Osage Nation or you are with a Osage family member. I have attended numerous funeral of Osage Native members and I would be safe to say, 90% of the Osage members are Catholic. I have taken meals at the campgrounds after funeral services several times with family members in Osage Nation. I do have some Sioux native blood, but no Osage blood, just many very great close friends in the Osage community.
There is one thing for sure, you are walking on sacred ground. That whole area of Gray Horse is sacred grounds!

I can't figure out why would happen like that. I didn't see any of that in the Pawhuska or Fairfax cemeteries. Of course those are in more populated areas. We do have a friend who is Osage and they have family in rural cemetery and it's not happening there either. Many of those seem to be on ones that are in the time frame of the reign of terror. I would be curious how Hominy's cemetery is. I think they need to install some game cameras. It's so sad to see that happening.

I read in the commentary of this same video that this damage occurred many years ago. It appears to be malicious vindictiveness to me - that they wouldn't get away with in cemeteries that are located in populated area.. And yet the Hominy cemetery has suffered the same damage that also occurred a long time ago. Which makes one wonder....

    • @RhettyforHistory

It is definitely sad to see this like this. I know a lot of people want to pass it off with rocks or hail hitting the photos which does happen but there is a large number of these in the Osage area. What is interesting about that is there is more grass hear and yet why do I not see it in cemeteries where there are more rocks? In many of them you can see damage where it has been hit multiple times or with specific tools or weapons. The number of photos I see like this are really high in the Osage area.

What a beautiful peaceful cemetery. I'm am absolutely mortified to see such damage to someone's resting place. How extremely disrespectful. What happened in the past should be left in the past all grudges should have been laid to rest by now. It hurts my heart to know people can hold grudges for so many years and through so many generations of people. The only people that should still be upset about the past are the native people who got treated so badly by the invaders to there land. They were treated awfully.

Thanks for the video. I grew up in this area and went to Grayhorse School (about a mile west of the cemetery) for grades 1 thru 6 from 1957 to 1962, when it closed. In fact, we lived for a while just outside the fence of the school so I've visited this cemetery many times. Also during the late winter/early spring the school 4-H Club or Fairfax Cub & Boy Scouts sometimes would help trim in the cemetery. As you can see there is a lot of fencing and we didn't have powered "weedeaters" back them; just hand clippers and many, many blisters. I can recall even then a lot of the photographs had been shot out so it is not a new thing, as evidently disrespect cuts across all generations. Also some would just weather out during a winter cycle if water during freeze-thaw-refreeze had been able to enter behind them & either popped out the whole photo or broken it apart. We'd pick up the shards, or if a whole photo just lay it on the stone. After being gone many years I am back in the area now and revisit it now and again, but especially during Memorial Day as a former schoolmate and veteran is buried there. There's a lot of history in this cemetery so please, when visiting be respectful.

I really don't understand it. I started to wonder if it was a cultural thing. I know the Osage do not like their picture taken without permission. And just because the person next to you got permission doesn't mean you can too. So I wondered if some historian put those there and the families didn't like it? I'm not sure though. It seems like it could be a simple case of vandalism but there are so many. Strange how some are chiseled, some are hit with a hammer and others are shot.

There is a long history here between the whites and the Osage. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with photos being defaced or not. It could just be people vandalizing or it could be that those families didn't want the photos shown. It really is a big mystery. Thanks for watching from NY!

Well the pictures coming out could be a number of things: 1 vandalism 2. some type of shoot out 3. worn out (I don’t really think that they are worn out due to some look like they are torn out). Especially when I started seeing scrapes from chisels and holes from from bullets. I can say that I wondered if maybe it was a cultural thing. Could it be some historian placed those on the graves without the family's permission? A person like me can not show up to the Pow Wow's there. I have to be invited. And once invited I cannot take photos of the Osage in full regalia unless i have permission from them. It's really difficult to say. I watched this vid when you first posted it, without knowing anything about the Osage Nation.. And I remember thinking, "What a lovely place to rest". But I'm now learning more about the Reign of Terror by the hour - DISGUSTING! I can't wait to read the book, "Killing of the Moon Flower".
Thank you, Rhetty - for bringing history to life as only you can! XX
EDIT: Again, the wealth of the Osage Nation is evident in this beautiful, peaceful cemetery with its magnificent monuments .. And the Christian faith is well-represented here too, as it is in other cemeteries you've been kind enough to show us. However, it's now abruptly obvious to me that so many of the dates here equate to the 'Reign of Terror'.. We know that more than 100 Osage were murdered just for their wealth - often by marriage to Osage members, and then murdering them - and so often achieved by way of poisoning, while very few of the murders, save for those which were blatantly obvious murder cases, were ever investigated. Such was the greedy control over those in positions of power and in the legal system - and it probably remains that way to this day. Furthermore, from the numerous comments we've learned that the photos were deliberately vandalised many years ago. So please forgive me if I'm making assumptions, because the last thing I would ever do is to insult ANYONE, much less without good cause! But it's also obvious that many of the gravestones bear Scottish surnames (and, like Rhetty, my heritage is all Scottish - which makes it even harder for me to make such a suggestion as follows!), but are we seeing SOME gravestones here of Osage members who were horrifically murdered for their head rights by those who married into the Osage families with murder on their minds - purely in order to claim on those head rights??? It seems that vandalism alone could never account for the sheer number of photographs that have been damaged here in this otherwise beautiful cemetery?? .. No. Surely this seems more like pure vindictiveness..As if the vandals deliberately intended to obliterate the very memories of these people.
I do hope I'm wrong on all counts - and I do hope someone would tell me (nicely, please!) if I'm wide off the mark on any count. I welcome all replies in that regard. THANK YOU!
And thank you Rhetty, for taking us to this beautiful place of eternal rest.. I know that I would be well satisfied to rest here..It is so beautifully maintained and cared for - which is why the damage to the photographs and even the iron fence as shown, really stands out. It does appear to even a casual observer to have been carried out with malicious and vindictive intentions.

This was a major problem here in the Osage area. The book is very well done but it only highlights a small number of what happened. I do hope that more Osage come forward and tell their story. It's a sad and dark time in our history here but I'm glad it is now being shared. I don't think we will every know the true number as even the Osage probably don't even know. I would bet many perished saying it was one way when in reality you're was another motive behind it. I have now been in multiple Osage cemeteries and every time I see younger ones within certain dates it makes me wonder what their story was. Money and greed made outsiders evil. They were all sorts of people that came in and did this. It's most certainly sad to see these.

There was a law that was passed in the 1990's that protects all Native cemeteries. They are the only race that has protection like this because they are the only ones with a law like that. There are a few instances where people have pushed that though. I do know there are certain Native Americans that do not like their picture taken. I realize those relatives gave permission but I wondered if they meant for that to be for the family and not the masses? That is what I was wondering if something like that occurred. This is also the area where the reign of terror occured. So I wondered if some of the relatives were still bitter about that? Which I know that pain still carries on. Or could it be from a disgruntled white person who was mad they didn't get the money? Maybe a tribal historian placed those there without permission from the families? There is a lot of possibilities. It's really difficult to say.i haven't been to all the Osage cemeteries but this is the only one that has been like this so far.

This community of Grey Horse is 100% Osage and at one time they were the richest people per capita. They had mineral rights to their land which was filled with the largest oil deposits the world has ever seen. The issue became when the govt appointed people to oversee each Osage person's money. I think originally it was there to help them but it ended up hurting them. They couldn't buy a tube of toothpaste without permission from their appointee. The appointees would skim money from them along with the retailers. Some went so far as to systematically murdering them to get their land, money and oil rights.

We have some stones in the cemetery my parents are in and the stone maker told me those pictures fall out over time... He said he discourages people from putting them on stones because of it. They were popular into the 40's. So sad that so many were destroyed....

They do fall out and fall off. If there is family around they can be placed back. This one had a huge amount that was vandalized. I'm not sure if it had to do with the past events or not. Thank you for watching.

Someone took a hammer and went through this cemetery to do damage on purpose, sound to be an adolescent thing to do!! Terrible, probably locals, can’t picture tourist, or visitors to do this on purpose!

It is terrible. The Osage have been trying to find out who did it but they really have no clue. I'm not sure if the book Killers of the Flower Moon and the Osage Reign of Terror have anything to do with it. I really doubt it was a local but you never know. It's sad either way. Thank you for watching.

I'm from the area, the broken vandalism is just the way it is and has been for years... Read the book children of the flower moon.... It's still that way today.... Sad....

I know this happened somewhat right before I filmed this. I haven't heard of children of the flower moon but I have read the book Killers of the Flower Moon. I have done a video on that as well.
