- Three young people. Three stories of living differently in China. This generation is richer than their parents but they face strong pressure to achieve and conform. Now many are forging their own path.
Working with a local crew, reporter Lydia Feng takes us into the lives of a student, a farmer and a shopkeeper.
Tutu - student
‘Tutu’ loves Voguing - the dance subculture born out of the queer scene in 80s New York City. A student in Shanghai, Tutu has embraced his Voguing ‘House’ as his new family.
“We all feel like we don’t belong in this society. Growing up, I felt the oppression of traditional values trying to take hold of me…so a ‘Voguing House’ is something very important to me. It’s a family I choose.”
But outside this new family, Tutu feels like a misfit.
“All institutions…They say you have to do something to fit their standard of ‘good’. Society is the same. It judges you with its rules. But what if I don’t think this is good? Why can’t I be my own ‘good’ as long as I don’t disturb others?”
Zhao Jia - farmer
31-year-old Zhao Jia had a Cadillac, an apartment in the city, and a career with China’s largest private education company. She gave it all up - to be a farmer.
Jia is part of a group in China called fanxiang qingian or ‘returning youth’ - young Chinese turning their backs on the big city to re-embrace their hometowns.
She ‘live-streams’ her farming life and advertises her produce to more than half a million followers on Tik Tok and other platforms.
“When young people come back to do agriculture, we must distinguish ourselves from the older generation of farmers. Otherwise, there will be no point.”
Jia’s parents are farmers but she wants to manage the land differently, using fewer pesticides and herbicides and free-ranging her livestock.
Her mother isn’t thrilled with her daughter’s tree-change.
“My goal was to raise my children to be college students…I felt sad when she told me she wanted to do agriculture...I still think an office job is better.”
Li Chuang - shopkeeper
At the age of 32, Li Chuang was feeling lost and suffering from anxiety. He left his job as an editor with a renowned publishing house and volunteered with Taoist monks on Wudang Mountain.
Returning to Beijing, he took over a small corner shop in the hutongs - the narrow alleyways of the old city where Chuang grew up. He’s resisting the relentless pressure to achieve.
“There are people online telling me, "You should feel sorry for letting your parents down and wasting the resources of our country. You got a master’s degree with their support, but you end up running a corner store?!" It's like I should say sorry to the whole country.”
Practising tai chi at his local park and playing music, Li Chuang is striving to find his own equilibrium. Life was tougher for his parents, he thinks, but also simpler.
“Their generation’s way of thinking, formed in the context of collectivism...Our generation is more pluralistic because we face more choices and we live in a more fragmented time. Both the opportunities and the challenges we face are probably greater than before.”

We need to check whether our actions are disturbing others. In our highly connected world, our day-to-day actions can have real but unfortunate and yet invisible consequences half way across the world in a completely different continent, country, timezone on a different day or even month or year. We best be careful to not disturb all other sentient beings including the non-human animals we in the industralized nations exploit, not for our necessity, but simply for our pleasure and convenience. There is a human toll as well, in that animal agriculture is damaging to the environment that many other beings depend on to survive, and potentially reduce living standards for many more people. Our actions in society today have many unseen, unnoticed or simply ignored consequences.
@@rosequartz2290 Minority will always exists. A functional society should be able to tolerate, accept, and progress with diversity. On another note, what actually defines a good or bad consequence? Are you evaluating a society defined by borders only or humanity as a whole? Much is up for debate. However, I respect your views and values.
This gave me so much joy. So refreshing to see China and Chinese in their full humanity. So different than the political narrartive we're given about China
19:20. I like this dude. I think he's following the traditional Chinese philosophy of Daoism, going with the flow, living a simple life possible. Something that modern China is missing, I think it's something all our countries are missing, ignoring our cultural & philosophical roots that got us where we are today.

The Chinese government seems to be more focused on the traditional Chinese philosophy of Confucianism, or "Know your place and obey your betters."

I love these people they're not hurting anybody they just want to live the life that makes them happy. In my opinion they're contributing to their country in creativity, love, happiness and inspiring others to live their dreams.
I loved this episode so much. These peoples' stories were fascinating. I find their courage to be true to themselves heartwarming and inspiring.
I live in China and have witnessed the facade everyone puts on to fit in all the time. Seeing stories like this warms my heart cuz this to me is the hidden beauty of the country. It takes these different cultural ideas they've seen around the world that speaks to them and make it their own. I love when folks here are brave enough to be themselves because goddamn are they wonderful people

I travelled to Chengdu and Chongqing 2 years ago and I was astonished by open LGBTQ relationships and the style of not just young people but most of the people. Very friendly and helpful. The media always shows a dark image of china but that’s not the case if you visit. All Asian countries are conservative but it’s easy to see alternative lifestyles and a very nice style.
I feel happy reading this. Makes me hopeful for future generations.
Actually, speaking as a native Chinese, this vedio shows exactly how China is changing now. Outsiders always tring to put China and Chinese in dark images, but the truth is human around the world are facing their own struggle and anxiety, not satisfied with their suroundings more or less, and most of us are fighting with unhappiness bravely, there is no perfect place just waiting you to be born, I really dont believe that anyone tell me in your country, every single one was accepted and being treated just like they wished, ppl are just ppl, it does not matter where you came from, label someone from somewhere means you voluntarily close your eyes.
The big cities in China will always give people fresh and new impressions contrary to the "traditional" right-wing news coverage (say, Sky News). Besides, the problem with China is not caused by its people, who already tried so hard to live a decent life, but by the authoritarian government.

I kind of like the life style of the small business guy. He has his own roof over his had, enough to eat and most of his time he spends twanging his music instruments, thinking his thoughts or doing a bit of qigong. Guess meanwhile his mom is doing the cooking and laundry too. Fabulous. As long as you don‘t need expensive things, life can be a long tranquil flow.
I have to say that the quality of this production is outstanding.

I loved this documentary, it really shows a more human and unique side to China that is present in every country. As someone born in Beijing and currently living in Australia it really makes me appreciate how Australia is very accepting of individuality.
I hope that The ordinary Human from China understands that no one has a problem with them. I just reject their form of Government. But the best I can do is understand my Government is not perfect and do the best I can to help the next person.

Unfortunately they don’t make up for a very large part of the population but non-Han were exempted from the one child policy so they have had a population increase. But if we’re talking about cultural diversity, it’s even better. Pretty much each province has its own culture and dialect/language.

@Sean W Ahh you see I mistook divisive with diverse as well… bad English on my part. But in a way every country has divides but from my experience I think that gap between people is smaller. I feel like I can trust those around me with all sorts of things. Maybe that’s because I am quite exclusive with those around me but the friendliness that I can sense within my community is one that is accepting and I think reflective of a broader nature in many Australians.

The parents of these people should be very proud. They have taken what their parents instilled in them and took it a step further based on the times we are living in. There is nothing wrong with being content. That is not being lazy, but instead happy for what you have rather than sad for what you do not have. Kudos to all of them!
I don't think Li Chuang is lying flat at all ... he is not a lazy bump and is making a living by running his small shop ... if he can survive with it and is feeling happy then why not.
The most important think is that he is happy with his life.
There is no point having a 996 job and getting really stressed out as a result.
I agree he is a very hard worker and a real service to the neighborhood he even plays music for them. His mother should be very proud of her son.

Great piece on showing the real people of China how I experienced the chinese people when I went over for student placement..... Just like any where else in the world they want to live a life thats meaningful to them finding their purpose like every other human being back to their roots and real culture.
I pray that more humans outside China will see that our brothers and sisters inside China, and their beautiful parents, are so very similar. They too want to be free from strain and stress as the Mom says, "healthy in both body and spirit".
Humans will not survive if this does not happen.

We understand that there is a big difference between the people of a country and that countries government. For example I’ve met some wonderful people from Iran that were very cosmopolitan, but as we all know Iran is run by a wacko mob of religious fanatics.
Sensible people are under no illusion that China is run by an etho-centric Han-supremacist totalitarian regime. I have this on the word of a number of friends of mine from mainland China who have told me this themselves. Those who submit and agree with the regime will never feel it’s force against them. Those who openly resist according to conscience are crushed. Those who don’t see this are those who are true believers in the righteousness of the regime and trust everything the regime’s state-owned and run media tells them.

Great reporting, as a "Westerner" I got such a positive view of Chinese individuals, specially those in this documentary that seem to be flowering as individuals. I guess it's the collective spirit that always seem so foreign to me as a European, because individuality is such a natural part of living here. Lovely & insightful documentary-I thought each of their stories were interesting, I especially resonated with Li Chuang. I think there's such an emphasis in larger economies to turn every decision as a sort of ROI, a sort of chain in productivity. Hell, we even start calling art, film, music "products". I can understand where this becomes overwhelming. Tutu's awesum: I love the reflections he made at the end about not fossilising, staying open to growing. That's so true! I only wish the Afro-American/Latinx roots of vogueing had been mentioned, if only because that would deepen the link between those LGBTQ kids (who projected their dreams of excellence in a tough world that categorically rejected them onto a ballroom scene where they live that fabulousness- if only for that evening!) with these young people trying to find their way of being...yes, vogueing started as a gay subculture scene in NYC, the Black LGBTQ community!
V interesting doc on China that unlike more recent western portrayal of China is almost always negative light, this one is actually objective and tells stories of actual Chinese ppl. Need more China docs like this that humanizes the Chinese under common shared human experiences we all have instead of typical political driven BS news

Despite that ABC has to put the communist government in the context for a casual criticism, the documentary reflects the lives of some typical groups of youths in China in a quite factual manner. Hope the audience realise that it is the a lot better living standard in China that gives these youths the freedom to not do what they don’t like to.

Ya know, it's hard to be yourself when you're constantly thinking about how to put a shelter over your head and food on the table. Just a bunch of rich kids finding their "passion", while most of us are competing to survive. It's a privileged concept, no more. Passion is what you're capable of doing and you're okay with it. When money is involved in any passion, it becomes a job because you got a customer now. Keep hobbies hobbies, and work work and you won't have this "existential" crisis.

This film raises the prominent question of self vs community which is reflected mostly in the forms of governments that exist around the world. Should I give up a portion of my profits for the greater good of the community? In the past, the community always existed above the individual. With the new generations, new thoughts from increasingly educated people believe otherwise.

Those are all extreme outliers. Less than 1 percent Chinese behaves this way. For ppl don’t understand Chinese culture, please don’t be misleading.

The only thing you can't do in China is probably anti CPC. You can criticize your local government and make complains. There is a Mayor hotline in every city and they will take each complains seriously. The house of representatives is made up from people of all industries, minority groups and religious groups to make sure all voices are been heard. When I was little, there are always people protesting in front of government buildings.
