Burning at the stake has to be one of the worst ways to die because its a slow painful death. People think we have a hard life these days but its nothing compared to what it was like back then.
You can stand by the spot where she was burned in Rouen. It's quite sobering to stand there and think that around 590 years ago a young woman was burned to death right there.
@@billbuyers8683 Incorrect. Joan of Arc was asked at her trial which she loved more, her banner or her sword, and she was quick to reply "My banner", because it did no harm to anyone. She was even reported by eyewitnesses at the siege of Oreleans as staying with a dying English soldier and weeping for him. There are absolutely no accounts at all of Joan ever injuring anyone, and it was not even a matter of note for the judges at her trial.
Maybe you're twisted. She used the word of god to wage war...shit. they're still people who believe God told them to wage war. You're brainwashed to the fullest.
My excuse is that my parents and country don't want me to lead an army against England, which to be fair makes sense, we are like in the otherside of the world and England is right over in Europe.

I, as a Muslim, spent few hours today to watch documentaries about her life. I learned about her before in history lessons, but never studied her life and tried to understand what she stood for and what was her actual character. I always respect pious people, whether they are Muslims, Christians or Buddhists, does not matter. A pious person, a person who is true to his religion, dedicates his/her life for higher noble causes always inspires me. And what a woman she was! By the way, the way that she said she heard voices and she had visions are similar to Prophet Muhammd's first experience. Although we Muslims don't believe in sainthood, I believe her that she had a mission. May she rest in peace. May Allah (god) have mercy on her soul.
I cried when the description of her death went on. I found it not only terrible but so sad. She was a Christian and called out to Jesus as she burned alive. RIP Joan. A fallen heroin and a fallen Christian sister.
She was a witch who used claims of "visions" to get her own way. In fact I just had a vision from God which told me she was a manipulating good for nothing faker.
@@gigasquid2040 I agree with that. But, if someone claims a vision, then who is to say they are wrong and Joan was right or vice versa. Anyone can claim "a vision". On that premise, I dismiss Joan as a faking manipulator.
The term 'English' can be misleading. The Plantagenet, a French Norman dynasty ruled England, and this was largely a war of control over ancestral territories between the mainland French and the French colonialist rulers of England.
French is just as confusing though, as large parts of France spoke different languages and had been semi independent of the French Crown for a long time. National identity was a pretty weak thing at the beginning of the 100 years war, one of its legacies was the creation of a strong sense of English and French national identity.
@@101Mant You could argue that the end of the 100 years war saw the birth of France as a distinct political entity and the rebirth of England as a distinct entity for the first time since 1066.

I am very, very, very sorry for your loss my friend. RIP to your wife. She would want you to live the best life that you can. God bless. I wish you all the best.
I noticed though according to the story as told in this video that Joan had threatened to have the Hussites killed for heresy. I think that is the moment when divine providence that was preserving her life left her. Notice also that prior no arrow could slay her but when pierced she would be healed by God. Not saying Joan was not a saintly woman because the threats she made became the conditions of her own trial and execution.. I most definitely think she was saintly. I just believe the words of Jesus "By the same standard of judgement you judge you yourself will be judged" are pure and true. I also think Joan at her capture and during her imprisonment had an awareness of the strange irony of her decision to threaten the Hussite's lives for heresy was now the judgement that was being done to her. I do think Joan humbly accepted her fate like the thief at the right hand of Christ who admitted to Jesus on the cross that he was not innocent, but Christ is innocent. I do because she worshipped Him in flames just like him. That in of itself is an immensely ecstatic picture to meditate on. At least for me. Being that close to God, Him letting you physically die a criminal's death like Him yet declaring Him holy. I think Joan was in the same place. At the right hand of Christ bound and facing the pain of death yet enamored by God. I've heard of saints being reported to appear to be in indescribable ecstasy while they dying. That it was not like they were suffering in excruciating pain but that they were suffering in excruciating bliss. I think that is how Joan left this earth. In rapturous ecstasy. Just my opinion of course. To be taken it with a grain of salt. Not all people are saints, but saints do also happen to make mistakes. Only God does not.
I truly give her props! If she wasn’t guided by god the tell me how a 19 year old girl who was 17 when she went to the French king and started could have done what she did. Especially in those days! No military training at all, nothing about tactics anything having to deal with work there and was able to win battles that she actually rode into in full armor with zero experience . probably never even held a sword before! God bless her poor soul! And yes what a beautiful and brave role model for woman, and men!
@Don2615 I bet your hostility towards cross dressers comes from all the times you found one attractive just to look closer and realize it was a boy. It’s ok, it happens to the straightest of us!
It probably would have been humiliating for them to publicly have to charge her with something that would highlight how a woman led their enemies to victories over them...
@@brandonquinte9348 exactly, people are so sheltered these days, there's much worse going on right now to innocent people across the world. Browse liveleak.com and open your eyes. Most stake victims died from inhaling the smoke before they were burned, and being flayed alive was worse.
@Darrell Devenny Jesus is still talked about because Constantine the Great decided to make Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire; without that it would have remained a cult
Jeanne's stake was deliberately built too high so that she was actually burned alive and not suffocated by smoke as was customary. She was also made to wear a sulfur-sprinkled robe.
That's what religion does, it prevents rational thinking. Most modern doctors and scholars believe she was likely schizophrenic, and why she was hearing voices. If she were alive today, she'd be medically treated, not thought to have any divine contact.

I am american and was talking to a fellow truck driver last year about the craziness in our country. he said he was from New Orleans. And that City officials had decided to remove all of the old Confederate monuments from the city park. When they started doing so apparently they got so excited that they also broke and tore down a statue of Joan of Arc that has been carved out of the Natural Stone that stood there. It's a shame when people that have no understanding of History wish to strip it from all of us.
Craziness is defined by the millions of people in the modern US who are still calling the decades old blind, unquestioning worship of the confederacy and its twisted values "history" in a country which was allegedly founded and built by people seeking freedom from oppression. Race based chattel slavery in the US and in the rest of the Americas destroyed countless nameless girls who were even younger than Joan. That's history.

I’m a huge history buff. JOA has always been one of my favorite historical figures. Proof that even a peasant, and a child peasant at that: can achieve great things in life. She didn’t do it for fame or glory either. She did it for her country and her God. A true hero.
Jehanne la Pucelle was not a peasant woman. Her father, Jacque was the prévot of the entire region. Her mother , Romée Vouthon Ysabeau de Salm was from a Vosges small noble family ! The brother of Jacque, Nicolas'wife was a ''Dame de compagnie'' at the Court of Charles VII. No peasants here ! Jeanne la Pucelle was from the Barrois region and she left for ''France'' in February 1429. God is not in the story. Mainly, we have Michael the Archangel, St Catherine of Alexandria and Marguaret of Antioch. However, both St Catherine and Marguaret were removed from the Vatican Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints, in 1969, they never existed, they were part of the 15th century folklore.
Sadly, my gggggggg-grandfather Richard Beauchamp, 13th Earl of Warwick, served as superintendent of Joan's trial and possibly oversaw her execution. So my ancestor is the villain in this story, but at the same time, the thought that a person I share DNA with laid eyes on one of the greatest women in history is astonishing to me. Honestly, if the English hadn't done this horrible thing, would we even be talking about her now? The English made her a martyr, they made her a legend, it's the only silver lining I can find in the horrible thing my ancestor played such an integral part in.
Every time I see or read about Joan's execution, I find myself imagining one of her followers walking out of the crowd, and climbing onto the already aflame pyre to burn with her so she won't die alone as a final act of loyalty, and friendship.

Something remains from Joan of Arc: her ring. It has been bought in 2016 in an auction in England and then brought back in France with great pomp. Whether it's authentic or no is another story but ultimately it doesn't matter. From now on it's the Joan of Arc ring, it's a sacred relic and that's it. The English tried at the time to have the sale annuled, arguing that the ring was part of the historical heritage so ... Anyway it was obviously replied that there was nothing to be discussed and that the ring would stay at home now for ever. The market value of the ring is not the problem while its emotional value is infinite, Joan of Arc being the most sacred historical figure in French History. It's a very old story now and of course it might have been preserved in England but it's best off at home...
This is NOT true ! Jehanne la Pucelle did NOT '' delivered victory to France'' since the English Army was in France for nearly 50 years after her death in 1431 , There were in Normandy for 20 years after her death ! She was executed for a political reason.
The Burgundians who were not part of France at that time captured her. Reading through comments, some people just said “she had schizophrenia” as if this excused the way she was killed! She was killed because she was a war “criminal” in the English eyes and was caught, trialled and killed. At the time, things were done this way. Not right nonetheless. Thank you for another great video full of interesting information.
Well said Ana. It was horrible and she was murdered for political reasons, not because she had visions. People tend to go after the more sensational bits.
She was caught by the Burgundians who were French and handed to the English. The trial was conducted in French by French Burgundians. Burning at the stake was not an unusual execution so..
I know that. I like history and Joan of Arc is known to me for a few years (since high school at least). My comment was more because some people in this thread just wrote “she has schizophrenia” as of this alone granted the death penalty. That is the only thing I wanted to high light.
They are referring to her hallucinations not her reason for execution. She was not a war criminal as she knew nothing of military tactics, and didn’t take part in any hand to hand combat as she had no training, her ignorance of battle almost got her killed twice. Her beatification in 1909 was purely a financial descision by the Catholic Church to profit from her legacy as is the case with all saints, give a them a day in the year, millions go to church and donate. Purely financial institution.

In our cynical age where materialistic goals reigns supreme, it's refreshing that Faith of Saint Joan of Arc was so simple and straight forward as to be understood by everyone which is refreshing .
Perhaps it's also good to know that general level of violence decreases with the raise of secular society, humanism, democracy and scientific progress - if scaled to the size of population, it applies even if we consider modern big wars and this trend continues. It's everyone's choice to believe in supernatural or transcendent. However, religion is simply not a true source of altruistic or other 'nice' behavior, this is based on how mature, resourceful and educated the society is. Needless to say that while the political reasons played a role in this case, the official sentence of Joan was a matter of religious opinions. I am personally quite happy in this cynical society without being worried that I am gonna be burnt for heresy. Perhaps it is the way the news works these days that people tend to think about historical societies having some 'better values', like being feared of god, that we lost the faith etc. Well, it's indeed worth to make a sanity check, how the life really was back in time.
@@janvesely6353 I'm absolutely astonished how for people like you that claim to be enlightened by science and what not, have an absolute religious zeal when it comes to spreading your ideas. @@Adam-nc6qg well, I responded to description of the present age as cynical, I just don't think it is, nor it is worse than in age of Joan, which is somehow obvious considering all the circumstances of her rather sad story. Trust in deity cannot be compared to a science, there is no dogma, it's a logical framework to analyze and describe perceived reality. It is not about faith, it is about comprehension and reproducible experiment, you can measure and predict results, apply it practically. Any theory can be challenged and replaced with more consistent one, it is not a truth claim, it's an evolving process. I studied physics not because I believe in it, but because it can be understood and applied, and btw, I really like it :D p.s. it is kind of interesting how quickly you can know who I hate or worship and what I like or not, without knowing anything about me. Basically the claim that absence of faith is not a problem of the current society makes you know who I am? These are serious God powers;)
@@janvesely6353 I have no God powers, you just described your worldview on multiple occasions rather well. To think that there is no dogma in science is rather silly, considering there are multiple theories from theory of gravity to evolution, where you would be laugh out if you deny them without proof (understandably). However where your true critical lack of knowledge comes from is your silly notion that religious dogma was something that was always set in stone without much room for discussion, or if there was, then it always resulted in witch burnings etc. I sugest to you to study some historical/philosophical/theological books (would recommend Descartes for that matter) to understand there is more scientific method in theology, than some cretin from r/atheism would suggest. Progress isn't a straight line, and certainly the idea that if we abondon religions in favor of science we will reach Star Trek like utopia is complete nonsense and fantasy. Well, that's a stucky wicket that goes all the way back to 1066, when a certain Norman Duke invaded England and ended up owing fealty to the King of France for his holdings there. Then it gets complicated. ;-)
Henry VI was a closer relative to the French Crown than the Dauphin, because Philippe le Bel or Philippe IV of France had given his daughter, Isabella of France, in marriage to Edward II... The French Dauphin was a nephew from the House of Valois. Therefore, the English Aristocracy used that opportunity with a declaration that a grandson is closer to the Crown than a nephew ! Also, the Dauphin's mother, Isabeau , said that Charles VI was not the real Dauphin' father. Charles VI having a mental disorder, Isabeau was not living with the King, but with his brother in Paris !
Its always the same story, after a good person dies some time pass by and people start to think they are saints and some more time pass by and people start worshiping him (very rarely her).
Joan's status in the Church is as a "Virgin", not a "Martyr." She was examined by a group of women appointed by her enemies to declare her a virgin or not, the belief being that a witch had sexual commerce with the devil. Alas for her enemies, the examining women declared that she was physically intact and a virgin, and thus could not be a witch (close to a miracle in itself, considering all of the horseback riding astride she did). She was declared a heretic, but on what grounds is not clear; claiming visions is not heresy, and she had never denied any Church doctrine. Her trial was a farce and a disgrace and held by people whose minds were already made up. The decision was reversed by the Church and she was later canonized. Her feast day, May 30, is a major holiday in Orleans. My firstborn daughter's Confirmation name is Jeanne d'Arc.

The church did not have to “reverse” anything, her trial was a purely secular event, the motives were secular though conducted by a bishop, twenty six later the Rome decided to look into the trial and found numerous problems with her original trial and excommunicated the bishop who condemned her.

She was betrayed by her own people, they sold her out after she served her purpose. Goes to show who the real enemy was. What a horrific death, I pray she is in glory and peace.
She was captured by the Burgundians, allies of the English, and sold to them. Don't really know what you mean that she was "betrayed by her own people."
The down votes are probably from people who actually KNOW something about history. Joan was almost undoubtedly schizophrenic, anorexic, and had a host of delusions that made her truly believe in what she was doing and saying. She was set up by the French leaders as a last resort because the largely working-class soldiers wanted to follow her as their mascot. She was then sold out by the very people she sought to "save" because she had become inconvenient. This video makes it sound as though she did, indeed, have some sort of divine guidance or assistance. While she deserves our pity, it's NOT -- as this video would have us believe -- because the ENGLISH were the villains. The poor, mad child was used, abused, and abandoned by the FRENCH!
@@TalairanPerigord Yes, it was typical of “the time”. What has changed, or why? As recently as lynching.... we were still torturing people to death, People still beat each other to death. The reality of war shows that barbarity among ordinary people lurks not far under the surface. We still watch films where we seem to vicariously enjoy this sort of thing. I do not propose an answer to these questions.... I was just noting the peculiar reality that we humans seem to enjoy killing other people... and doing this act in excruciating ways. This reality does not seem to be limited to psychopaths.
@Andy Hagen Despite our technological advances, I often say that humans are just chimpanzees with machine guns. We still lack much in the way of critical thinking. People reject--often violently--things that frighten or threaten them. For example, mention the name Greta Thunberg in a community of incels and see what kind of vociferous hostility arises. Change happens, but slowly. We have come from a history of gruesome punishments, such as using torture to extract confessions, drawing and quartering, disembowelment (while the prisoner was still alive) to a place where capital punishment is no longer used. Yet the last hanging in Canada was in the 1960s, and some States still use lethal injection. We are not so far removed from our medieval forebears, and that's an uncomfortable truth.
Joan of arc, liberator of France, later to be ordained as a Saint, condemned to death by fire for wearing men’s clothes to try and fend off molestation by her guards(actually inaccurate, the English only offered her men’s clothing) she could show up nude or in men’s clothes this is a major embarrassment to the English, Joan is a hero.
This is not an embarrassment to the English This was around almost 600 years ago. If the English went back in time they wouldn’t even be able to understand their language around 400 years ago let alone 600 years ago. Why do people address this as if it is some recent conflict. Would you consider Napoleonic Wars or the Crimean War as recent? Because I feel like those are extremely old too, and they were in the 19th century.

French king would have a scapegoat...and if successful..king can claim it was because of his god given rule. You never wanna outshine your superior...or your boss. Fast way to die.. or be framed as a traitor Eh. England hated her...but when I look at her story...it feels like the king of France..who was secured as king by Joan, likely wanted her gone. =/ BUT the French king threw her under the bus. Especially since he couldn't kill her himself. Once she lost her usefulness..she was thrown out. What's the saying,? "Once the hunt is over...the hunting dog is killed/boiled .." outliving ones usefulness. She was more useful to the king dead. Kinda like how ww2 general Rommel was killed...then praised as a nazi hero. Joan threatened the French kings power in peace time

The term 'English' can be misleading. The Plantagenet, a French Norman dynasty ruled England, and this was largely a war of control over ancestral territories between the mainland French and the French colonialist rulers of England.
Equally confusing is the Norman's were descended from the Norsemen of Scandinavia
French is just as confusing though, as large parts of France spoke different languages and had been semi independent of the French Crown for a long time. National identity was a pretty weak thing at the beginning of the 100 years war, one of its legacies was the creation of a strong sense of English and French national identity.

@@fredbloggs9891 I don't think you exact understand what they mean by adore
The English were still in ''France'' for nearly 50 years after her death in 1431. Also, please remember that Jehanne la Pucelle NEVER used that family name, D'ARC in her lifetime ! This is an invention of the 17th century !
@@101mossie oh i agree completely about the catholic church and its monetisation of sainthood which has been going on for hundreds of years
Age of Empires 2 Joan of Arc campaign feels even more legendary now
According to some eyewitness accounts the crowd cheered at her screams of agony. Which lasted about an hour.
Not very reliable to be honest.
This is incorrect ! -- the population of Rouen was kept far away , only English soldiers were at the square ! This is why, we do not know about the last moments of Jehan la Pucelle. There are many ''stories'' of Jehan la Pucelle at the stake, however, these were written mostly from the 16th and 17th century, many, many years after her death in 1431 ! Mostly fiction !
No I don’t think that is right. Just think about it, she would have hopefully fainted through lack of oxygen and pain. The body is an amazing thing, it will try to look after it self and do amazing things. Anyway not the best way to die.
@@Watson1 ------ No offence yet this is not correct. Again, the population was not allowed on the square, only English soldiers ! Impossible to know the last moments of Jehan la Pucelle ! ---- Fire combustion at the stake is not enough to remove all the oxygen . Only bombing raids , like Dresden, could produce that reaction, people dying outside without air ! Naturally , I agree, she could have fainted but most probably smoke inhalation would have blocked the lungs, dying quickly ..... With most cases in Europe, the executioner would strangled/choked the condemned person using a cord/rope , if still alive, before the flames would arrived near the body. There were thousand and thousand of such executions all over the world ! HomoSapien sapien not the gentle type !!!

Could it be that when most of you abondon your faith you simply replaced it with faith of different kind.
Scientists became your priests, belief in science your religios dogma.
You don't realy like science, you just use it as an excuse to hate on people you dislike, just like religious people do in your worldview.
I studied physics not because I believe in it, but because it can be understood and applied, and btw, I really like it :D
p.s. it is kind of interesting how quickly you can know who I hate or worship and what I like or not, without knowing anything about me.
Nature abhors vacuum and doesn't do anything out of coincidence and man seems to have been made to worship, whetever that's God, science or people, it is inherent in our nature, like it or not.

Her Death is how she became a Martyr for the faith and a powerful saint of the church. So what we learn from this is that Henry VI of England and his subsequent heirs are the rightful rulers of France.

@Charlee John Not true !
The church did not have to “reverse” anything, her trial was a purely secular event, the motives were secular though conducted by a bishop, twenty six later the Rome decided to look into the trial and found numerous problems with her original trial and excommunicated the bishop who condemned her.

Usually thumbs down are for poor research and inaccuracies.

It was typical of the time.
@@TalairanPerigord
Yes, it was typical of “the time”.
@Andy Hagen
Despite our technological advances, I often say that humans are just chimpanzees with machine guns.
This is not an embarrassment to the English
This was around almost 600 years ago. If the English went back in time they wouldn’t even be able to understand their language around 400 years ago let alone 600 years ago. Why do people address this as if it is some recent conflict. Would you consider Napoleonic Wars or the Crimean War as recent?
