      I bought one for the weight and thin body and after an intelligent setup ( full setup, file nut, smooth out sharp fret ends) it sets up and plays better than any Strat I ever owned or played. My only other Squier was a beautiful Classic Vibe but it doesn’t play or setup better than the Strat. Only thing I don’t like is the Big Headstock. I love high output single coils so congrats on your pickup choice,

    I started playing a week ago and I had an old electric guitar from when rocksmith original came out. I was maybe 8 or 9 when I got it and after a week it gave out on me. So I went to GC today and picked one of these bad boys up and I love it. I was able to play power chords and they didn’t sound terrible 😂 I’m happy so far can’t wait to see how i progress

    60 year pro player here. Loved this video. I spent a whopping $190 shipped on a brand new (listed as mint) Lake Placid Blue Affinity and I love it! Even the pickups! Something about these pickups - they don't have that extreme treble and thinness that I don't like in a Strat pickup. I don't personally care for those Knopfler/Cray type tones. The only gripes are: the neck needed a final sanding which took a few minutes with 1500 grit sandpaper. Easy-peasy. Very little if any setup needed. The only other issue is pulling up on the trem, the block immediately bangs against wood, so I'll likely do a bit of routing for a little more clearance. I'm super happy - I've spent a lot more on a ONE PEDAL! Just for reference I had a Am. Performer that was way less quality. One of the wires was only soldered on ONE STRAND of wire, amongst other issues. Even had serious QC issues with a Suhr. Go figure.

      With a thin tremolo block it shouldn’t bottom out so easily unless it is floating very high. This is why I like thin blocks vs big fat tremolo blocks that and I am an engineer and the entire tremolo block material and tone argument is just nonsense.

      If you set it up properly I mean pro level you won’t know the difference between this and 1000+ guitar. Only thing that looks cheap and feels it is the paleness and lack of finish on the maple fretboard. I did put high output pickups but not because stock were not good enough I just like high output….a lot. Was a loaded pickguard for $40 so no big deal not like someone paying $250 for Seymour Duncan’s or some boutique brand.

    I got this guitar brand new for free from trading in a yucky Fender Telecaster (the trussrod was shot and the nut was poorly cut) along with $50. This guitar was absolutely the greatest guitar I’ve ever played, the sound is amazing! And the neck is absolutely smooth! The tuning stability is awesome! Cant believe that I just learned here that they’re basically the same as a fender Strat just an extra few hundred bucks more minus a few minor differences! I love this guitar!

    I got an Affinity the first year of manufacture, 1997. It's quite different than what Affinitys eventually became. Full sized body, probably alder. Small headstock. 12 inch fretboard radius. Dimensions more akin to an MIM. I've parted out the tuners, nut, all pickups and electronics entire vibrato and bridge system and input jack and pickguard, so I guess it's no longer an Affinty...but it's mine. Oh yeah, it was made in China.

    Replace pickups, replace the tuners, replace the bridge, get the frets properly dressed -- and, in the end, you still finish with a Squier for which you paid more than for a proper Fender strat (player s) not even to talk about the Squier CV's which, BTW are more than a decent guitars not only for the amateur or bedroom players.

      It really doesn't make a difference for somebody like you (who doesn't even know how to play). Most people who have partscasters aren't looking to sell them. It's a hobby. And by the way, odds are you're still going to change out a lot of things on that "proper Fender" too.

  • @jd9119

    The main reason why the low-end build quality has dramatically increased, is because of changes in the manufacturing processes. They're using computer controlled CNC machines that take a lot of the human labor (and skill) out of the equation. You're still going to see differences in quality of fret leveling/crowning. But it's making the difference between a cheaper guitar and a more expensive guitar, less extreme.
    Hopefully, that'll force guitar makers to invest more in hardware and attention to detail for their higher-end guitars. Otherwise, the price doesn't justify the purchase.

    It’d be cool if they made an ‘affinity plus’, like the player plus. Instead of going classic vibe, it’s a $400-500 range with a 2 point trem, slightly better pickups (overwounds would be epic) and locking tuners.

      I started with a squier and was great

    • @paulgordon6949
      @paulgordon6949 2 дні тому

      Both are gonna be just fine. I would say that the advantage of the tele is the simplicity. No trem system to muck about with - you won't need that as a beginner. The strat on the other hand, I find strats slightly more comfortable than a tele to play. Either will do just fine though. If you have a chance to play before you buy, do so and see which feels better. Or if you have a preference for the sound of either a tele or strat, go with that. Good luck and enjoy!

    • @jd9119
      @jd9119 День тому

      Either or are going to be fine and give you decades of service. The Tele is going to have more "grit" and the Strat is going to be a more "clean" and "brighter" tone. The strats usually also come with floating bridges that you can use a whammy bar on (not all of them of course). But all of those characteristics I'm saying really are not important to a brand new beginner.
      Regardless of what you end up deciding to get (and used guitars are a great option as well. Check online, at guitar shops and even pawn shops there are great deals to be had), you want to take the guitar to a guitar store to have it "set up." That'll cost you around $50. They'll adjust the truss rod, setup the intonation and action (as well as put some decent strings on). I highly recommend you do this before you start practicing on it.

    • @jimmyfranklin
      @jimmyfranklin  3 місяці тому

      Not better. Just different. Singles are brighter sounding and typically less loud but have a very specific type of sound. The downside is that they hum with overdrive on. The doubles are known as humbuckers and they do exactly that. The don’t hum and because there are two sets of magnets, they typically are louder and have higher output and a thicker tone. Neither is better. Just preference

      Yeah, like believing a guitar made in Indonesia is going to be better than a guitar made in China (just because of the country). They're both going to be made in sweat shops, by people who probably do not care about that guitar's specific tolerances. You can have decent ones made in either country. And you can stinkers from either country too. And most of the work is done by CNC machines now anyways (which is why the low-end guitar quality has jumped up a lot).
