    Hi Sam
    What are the names of the textbooks etc that we need for first year for Biological Sciences?
    Thank you!
    Grace

    • @sammckaylin
      @sammckaylin  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Grace, arguably the most important textbook is "molecular biology of the cell" by Alberts. It's the only book I would regularly use for reference in my first year and it covers two of the courses you'll take - CBG and BCM. I also used it a lot in second year whenever I was looking at anything to do with cellular biology so you'll get a lot of use out of it! There's a number of copies in the library, they sell second hand ones in the biology department in the first few weeks or you can get it from amazon second hand for about £40 (which isn't too bad relative to other books!).
      Other than that I didn't buy any text books in first year but there are a few books I can recommend if you haven't already read them (it'll give you an upper hand and provide loads of extra reading which can be used in exams!). I'd personally recommend the "ancestors' tale" by Dawkins and "why evolution is true" which will cover a lot of the content in the other two first year modules!
      I hope that helps and best luck starting in September!

    Got my offer through for Biological Science at Imperial yesterday! It's been a year since you posted this.. any more comments to add about your time here? Where did you choose to stay in first year btw? Gotta be hard to find the balance between distance and cost.

    • @sammckaylin
      @sammckaylin  4 роки тому +1

      Congratulations! I was put in WIlkinson which was both a blessing and a curse - It was great because I was super close but it was also really expensive. Honestly, no matter where you are what matters is you'll probably end up with some really decent people and that's what will determine the experience you have :)
      WIth regards to my thoughts they've changed a little... Back in second year I was finding my footing and wasn't exactly sure about where I was going and what I wanted to do. Imperial was a place I went and liked but that's about it. I''ve thrown myself into a lot more this year and honestly it's been incredible. I have no free time whatsoever but I've found the stuff I really love and that's filled it up. My best advice is to join as many societies and clubs as you can when you arrive here and just try everything. Then just stick with the stuff you enjoy the most. One tip though, don't run a society in third year - big regrets.:')

    Hi, I have an offer from imperial at biological sciences. I’m just wondering if I have to take subjects other than biology at the uni. I’ve heard about Horizons, which consist of various subjects need to be taken other than those in the enrolled curriculum.

    • @sammckaylin
      @sammckaylin  5 років тому +1

      和魂英才 hey, in first year you only have to do biology but you have the option to take part in horizons, in second year (at the moment) horizons is compulsory but they had a review of this a few years ago and it may come up again soon. The options on offer for horizons are pretty varied, there’s loads of languages, other subjects like psychology and business on offer. I study science communication so there’s something for everyone and I’ve found it’s really helped me explore myself as a person and everything around me other than just straight biology ☺️

      Luc Groshens Yep doing first year aero at imperial right now. Workload is definitely much higher than other unis for first years. There are quite a few deadlines very close to each other. However, if you keep up with the lectures and tutorial sheets (which I didn’t since I kinda focused on partying a bit too much) and keep the deadlines in mind, it’s is definitely manageable. Also a good tip would be to do your lab report as soon as you did the lab, it will save you the trouble and panic from trying to rush them right before the deadlines.

      My grades were good and I'd done a lot of extra-curriculars around biology and science communication. I think if you work hard and put in the extra work to fill out your application then you can atleast get an offer and then work hard you can meet it. It really depends on courses though as some like computer science are amongst the most competitive in the world

      Hi Lulwa, that totally depends on what you're applying for and what sort of grades you've got.
      Imperial is really competitive whatever way you look at it, the natural sciences. - Biology, chemistry and physics - are far less competitive than Computer science though and require AAA or A*AA rather than A*A*A and advanced mathematics. I'd argue though in every instance it's worth shooting for the stars and not selling yourself short because it's a great place to be and a great place to learn too!

      Lulwa if imperial offers the course and you write a stellar personal statement regarding your motivation then you most Deffo have a shot, however that being said if your not going to go imperial for what they specialise in then is there really any point? If it’s social sciences you’re looking to go into then maybe you should consider LSE :)
