I’ve mentioned it before but I HIGHLY recommend you look into the “disturbing novels iceberg” it is full of tons of books I know you’ve enjoyed/ picked up and I myself have used it all year to vicariously shop for myself through that list and have rarely been let down by it’s recommendations. If you were interested in making a video about it, it is long enough that it could easily fuel a whole series of videos of you reviewing and going over it. That last part is obviously just a thought but I think you would still enjoy looking into it for yourself and for inspiration for your wishlist 😁. Hope this helps 👍
I really like horror, but I love weird books with horror elements even more. Two weird books that I would recommend are Oh Pain by Kyle Winkler (a weird short story collection that's kind of simple storytelling but really makes you think) and Follow Me to Ground by Sue Rainsford (a short, visually descriptive novel with light fantastical body horror elements). I bought Antisocieties by Michael Cisco about a year ago. If you read it, I'd love to hear what you think. I hope you're having a good New Year. :)
To cement your understanding of those new words, you should try to work the phrase "pernicious agronomy" appropriately into a conversation somewhere lol.
Even though it's YA, I really enjoyed This Delicious Death. It was fun and had a few things to say about how we treat one another. Boys in the Valley was ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for me! Fantastic! I hope you enjoy!
Hope there’s more extreme horror vlogs coming soon, they’re some of my favorite videos you’ve made (specifically the ones where you try to read multiple in a week and give us a wrap up at the end)
If you haven’t heard of him before, J.G. Ballard is a guy who wrote a whole bunch of famous surrealist transgressive fiction works. He is most famously known for “Crash” which was adapted into a movie by David cronenburg you may have heard of, about people who are sexually attracted to car crashes and form a club recreating famous crashes in a sick gory sexual fantasy fueled nightmare
Omg! So I was watching this movie one time a long time ago, when the other Crash movie was popular. I think it was on HBO or something. Anyways, I remember being so so confused. 😂😂😂
Excited to hear your thoughts on Ligotti (definitely read his short fiction!) Cisco, and Ballard. A great book on writing craft is Vandermeer's Wonderbook - It is a thoroughly unique take on the craft process (as you might imagine) unlike any other writing books out there. And since I I'm here If you have not read Jerzy Kosiński's The Painted Bird, it is a short novel of surreal experimental literature that has all the horror in it you could want. It's fantastic.
This was such a fun watch! I totally get being interested in multipole things then not remembering when or why lol. Could be our past selves looking out for us slay 😌💅
Great Haul!! Eclectic in all the best ways. I mentioned this in a past comment, but I believe Stephen King's On Writing is the best book covering the art of writing; told autobiographical. Can't wait to hear about the Vonnegut tome!
I hope there are some wonderful surprise favorites in your haul. I loved Stoner. The writing in it is incredible without being flowery. The characters feel incredibly real. It’s a quiet story but a powerful one.
I DNF'd it. Not that it was bad, just a bit too dry for me at the time I was reading it. Maybe I'll revisit it sometime. A similar (but IMO better) book is Panenka by Ronan Hession.
Sarah, Stoner became one of my top books last year. It reached me feel which seldom happens. Absolutely loved it. Butchers Crossing is very good as well.
Atrocity Exhibition is such an interesting work, I absolutely love it! Thomas Ligotti's works are fantastic too, just take a bit of breaks to really let it sink in, or be like me and eat it whole and spend the next week thinking about it. I will have to see if I can find some Finnish horror and weird fiction translated to English so I can send them to you! There's an active science fiction scene in Finland, we even hosted a Worldcon in 2017, but there's also a lot of great horror, especially supernatural.
I read If on a Winter's Night a Traveller a couple of years ago! It took me a bit to get through it, and I didn't particularly like it much when I finished, but I did keep thinking about it for quite a while after. Definitely worth the read for the experience of it! I'm really excited to see you read all of these this year!
The rating of this Chuck Palaniuk is less than 3! Edit: on Goodreads People are saying that is super fucked up and gross!! I'm super excited to read it!!! ❤❤❤❤ Hope we enjoy it! 😂
I just discovered book UA-camrs almost a month ago and you’re already my favorite and I can tell you’ll always be! I adore horror books. I can’t enjoy anything but horror, murder mystery or true crime and I’ve gotten so many awesome book recommendations from you! You’ve inspired me to read more than I’ve ever read before which also helps me make more money at work (guys love to see strippers reading for some reason)!
Nice Haul - lots of goodies I'm Donald Ray Pollack fan, also a fan of Harry Crews. Have you ever read any William Browning Spencer ? or The Animals In That Country by Laura Jean McKay ? one more Geek Love by Katherine Dunn
The Maldoror book is along the same lines as the Story of the Eye but it's darker. You should put And the Ass Saw the Angel by Nick Cave on your list too
Hi Anda! Found your channel a few months ago and I absolutely love it. You've introduced me to some interesting new authors. Thanks and Happy New Year 2024!
"I'm gonna read this next, I'm gonna read this next!" is also me, except I usually don't end up reading it next. 😅 I have so many books that I want to read and not enough time. I read Boys in the Valley a few months ago and it's really good, still need to check out more from Philip Fracassi.
The Conspiracy Against the Human Race cover looks like it was done by Chris Mars! amazing artist who I first loved as the drummer for a fave band The Replacements!!!
Happy 2024, Anda! Glad to see you opening to other literatures, including some of my favorites. I read Maldoror 15-20 years ago, and re-read it last month. I didn't understand anything. But I loved it! I tried reading The Gospel Singer many years ago, the premise sounds super interesting, but the writing was terribly boring. It's not Flamnery O'Connor on steroids, it's her on downers. I've read all of Thomas Ligotti's short stories, but his "phylosophy" book (the one you got) has eluded me. His fiction is just perfect. J. G. Ballard is my favorite science fiction writer ever, and has been since the late 90s when I first discovered him. The Atrocity Exhibition is his most experimental book, closer to William Burroughs that to the rest of his own work. If you like it, go on, keep reading more Ballard, if you don't like it, go on, keep reading more Ballard. I'd suggest Vermillion Sands, The Drowned World and Cocaine Nights. Great stuff. If you like Torture Garden, you might be interested in exploring Decadentism. There are many authors, the French are the best ones.
I have the same problem with having books on my list that I have no idea how I arrived there. Stoner by John Williams is on my list too. I seem to remember arriving there because Stephen King mentioned it at some point. Maybe. Also, Harry Crews is an amazing writer, I'd also recommend his novel A Feast of Snakes. If On a Winter's Night a Traveler is also on my list, but I haven't the slightest idea how I got to it.
First saw Stoner on another booktube channel (Red Fury books) and it didn't sound like my usual cup of tea but felt in a modern classic mood. Something about Stoner really touched me, and that's not easy to do. No horror, but plenty of regret and what ifs. Butchers Crossing is also amazing, but one brutally hellacious western, extremely brutal and intense. Curious whether you'll enjoy it not.
I'm not sure if you're familiar, but there is a great podcast called This is Horror and the hosts interview horror authors, exclusively, and recently interviewed Palahniuk about his newest book. It's a great episode; definitely worth checking out! (The podcast, itself, too!)
"this sounds right up my alley; talk about nihilism, right? it's just a meaningless life? this sounds so fun, i'm so excited for this!" lmao i love this channel
2:34 😆Keep adding weird french philosophy books from time to time, just for the lolz. It should be a thing. Oh yeah, Happy new year! p.s. Italo Calvino is a great writer. I loved pretty much everything I've read from him. It's not horror. His "Cosmicomics" is close to sci-fi though. There's a part of a sentence in it, that sounds horrific, if taken out of context: "...in the midst of the darkness, we dreamed of more darkness, because nothing else came into our minds" (would be even rougher in first person, IMO).
Woah i can’t believe you picked up the atrocity exhibition by j.g. Ballard!! It’s been in my wishlist for so long now and I am still nervous to pick it up due to how weird it’s supposed to be. I would LOVE an in depth review of that book if it intrigues you because I simply need to know more
I wonder if the book "The Fog" is anything like the 1980 movie of the same name? It was directed by John Carpenter and starred Jamie Lee Curtis. I have the book but havent read it yet.......
I KNOW A GUY WHO HATES THE TOMMYKNOCKKERS WITH A PASSION. I GOT TIRED OF HIM AND TOLD HIM OFF SAYING THAT JUST TO PISS HIM OFF I WAS GOING TO READ THE TOMYKNOCKERS AGAIN. SO THERE.

Ohh Conspiracy against the Human race. I listened to that on Audio. It's Trippy makes you think, sounds believable and memorable.
I LOVED Boys in the Valley!! One of my favorites that I read in 2023. A great winter read!
You’ve got me reading the cosy books by Addison Moore. You’re right. They’re adorable.
To cement your understanding of those new words, you should try to work the phrase "pernicious agronomy" appropriately into a conversation somewhere lol.
😁Just don't use cement in the agronomy. It's pernicious.
Love your video and Christmas book haul! My partner got me a Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas ❤🥰 happy reading!

He is most famously known for “Crash” which was adapted into a movie by David cronenburg you may have heard of, about people who are sexually attracted to car crashes and form a club recreating famous crashes in a sick gory sexual fantasy fueled nightmare
Yeah, that sounds like something Cronenberg would adapt.
Omg! So I was watching this movie one time a long time ago, when the other Crash movie was popular. I think it was on HBO or something. Anyways, I remember being so so confused. 😂😂😂

Your excitement about depressive existential nihilism is so wholesome.
Hey Anda, happy new year! Just wanted to say that you need to read Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian if you haven't yet. You're gonna love it!
I read This Delicious Death on a whim and loved it! It was so fun and a super fast read
Boys in the Valley was one of my favourite reads from 2023, you will LOVE it!
This was such a fun watch! I totally get being interested in multipole things then not remembering when or why lol. Could be our past selves looking out for us slay 😌💅
I enjoyed Heavenly Table & Boys in the Valley!
James Herbert is a great author, I highly recommend his novels
Great Haul!! Eclectic in all the best ways. I mentioned this in a past comment, but I believe Stephen King's On Writing is the best book covering the art of writing; told autobiographical. Can't wait to hear about the Vonnegut tome!
“This Delicious Death” was a fun read! I think you will like it!
Stoner is a brilliant work! I've enjoyed all of Williams books.
I hope there are some wonderful surprise favorites in your haul. I loved Stoner. The writing in it is incredible without being flowery. The characters feel incredibly real. It’s a quiet story but a powerful one.

Reached me deep.....damn spellcheck.

Wow Stoner is one of the absolute best books I have ever read. Really excited for your video about it!
I also just bought Heavenly Table as I love Devil all the Time. Ballard is good.

Ligotti's book is a treat. The rest of these sound very fun!
I'm so happy that I found your channel last year: you've quickly become my favourite Booktuber.
Happy new year to you & yours, Anda! ✨
The best work by Thomas Ligotti is "Teatro Grottesco" short stories. This is kind of horror like weird fiction.
The rating of this Chuck Palaniuk is less than 3! Edit: on Goodreads

Liggoti is so funny you’ve got one of the funniest and best books on philosophy there
