  • Once the basics of how to paddle board have been mastered we can begin to add a little more power to the stroke. In this video SUP technique expert Sam Ross demonstrates how to improve your paddling and increase your speed across the water.
The main thing to remember is that the board moves past the paddle so the most important thing is to place the blade where you reach.
The entry of the paddle is called the ‘catch’ and we need to make sure we bury the blade here. Keep the paddle vertical. The more the top hand is over the bottom hand the straighter the board will go. Lastly, make sure the blade comes out of the water at the feet. Drag will be created if you go past the feet.

Great videos!! As a Canadian who grew up paddling a canoe, it takes some getting used to the practice of removing the paddle at the feet. It is counter-intuitive to the classic 'J-stroke' we learn for paddling a canoe. I do appreciate the attention to specific details on body mechanics, and the camera angles and use of slow motion to really isolate specific details. Excellent production!

Just watched your video to see if I was doing it right. Lately I have felt very confident in my paddleboarding and just wanted to make sure I had the technique down. It felt natural and faster to me and just checked your technique and I was doing it the same way!!

If you hold the paddle vertically with the blade slightly rotated laterally in other words instead of from 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock it’s from 10 o’clock till 4 o’clock when you hit the water it will be 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock beside the board and you will never have to paddle on the other side again

Hi - we're pretty spoilt for choice in the UK with almost every stretch of water available for exploration. If paddling inland waterways you may require a license so worth checking the British Canoe membership scheme on this otherwise always take notice of local regulations an signage to avoid dangerous or restricted waterways.

Getting back on an inflatable board is really difficult from the side because they are so buoyant, I have to go to the back of it to get on, worth trying in safe water before going to sea! Wear lifejacket, anything can happen at sea!

I noticed you have a very curved elbow in your upper arm when paddling. However, when I watch videos of sup races, most racers have a nearly straight upper arm. I think this will involve more core strength and make your strokes more powerful. Personal view though.

Все дело в технике гребка. Если правильно держать весло и вести его без наклона вдоль борта, то можно достаточно долго грести с одной стороны.
