I wish you would spend more time showing all the features of the boat and how you were actually build a boat
yeah
Ikr
I agree with you 120%!!
That would have been nice
@@Billsbob Hi Guys- there are 2 other videos associated with this project. Sunflare created this video that was feature on Motor Boat and Yachting to showcase individuals who are doing inventive applications of solar. @@sasumihai7121 And that's all you can say about what they've achieved with this adventure.
Get a life you muppet.
Yes, the editing and voiceover does need a bit of work.
You are living my dream. In my younger years I thought a lifeboat conversion would be the perfect way to go for wanderings. Life got in my way. Kudos for making your dream a reality!
Karen Davis, nit really suitable unless you dont mind the smell of the diesel and sea sick due to the round size.but its ok if you live near a lake.
OK, THAT BOATS TOOOOO PERFECT? Well done...
It's always nice seeing a beautiful young couple working together on a project.
Serene View, sailing into endless ocean, able to work from any corner of the world, while sailing, living a dream of many!!!
Wonderful design giving this lifeboat a whole new life. Oh the envy, it burns and stings.
Couple of questions
1) how much fuel do you carry?
2) what is the top speed?
3) do you have a water maker on board?
4) what kind of range do you have?
#2 is 6kts.
1. Specs on those types of boats have about a 47 gallon capacity giving them about a 180 mile or so range with the stock diesel engines.
2. 6 kts
3. The ocean is made of water, you don't need to make it. A desalinatior on the other hand...
4. See number 1.
That's probably a yanmar 40hp and it consumpts about 6l per hour
@@AKAxeMan Desalination units on yachts and pleasure craft are commonly known as water makers, you pedant.
"Shackleton"!! Ernesto Shackletons voyage of the endurance was an amazing story. Great name for the pup!!!
I love the boat. Probably the safest vessel to be out in the open sea as well..Great stuff.
For those who like tales of adventure, Erskine Childers's 1903 The Riddle of the Sands features a sailboat made from a lifeboat of that era. It is a great sailing tale.
yes that's definitely a brilliant sailing adventure film.one of my favorites.

Michael W. Perry one of my FAVS! Not only was it a great sailing/spy adventure but you learned so much about the geography of the Netherlands! So much so that I’ve read it several times. Being a pan avid nautical history/fiction fan, I was absolutely enthralled. Even printed out maps of area to familiarize myself w the East and West Frisian Islands. Followed the real life, fascinating story of the author Childers as well. Did u know Churchill enacted new Defense Laws due to this book?! Defense against an invasion from the North Sea. Incredible history. 👍 BTW the 1979 film w Michael York was just OK but whenever it’s on TCM I make sure to catch it! 😁
Fantastic use of a rock solid canvas. Fair winds to these lads.
Heia, Im Norwegian, and from around tromsø. you have to go to lofoten and vesterålen. its an amazing island group whith high mountans and deep water. you can spot wild whales and rich birdlife. and many private beaches like this one: 69°13'55.3"N 15°51'33.7"E it was in an Apple AD. ;)
Why do you put lines through your o's
Thank you for being awesome.
I never even considered a lifeboat as an option. Never even knew they were available for purchase. Very ingenious.
Neither did I until I was doing some work on a friend's canal boat and I kept seeing these big plastic orange things throughout the London canal system. Its a fantastic idea and they have a charm all of their own, I REALLY want one, lol.
A guy on georges small spaces butchered one, its not as easy as it looks 12inches of boyancy foam on the inside, to just name one problem
I looked at them a few years ago to convert like this. Boats that I found were surprisingly expensive

Having money opens many doors to many adventures... only for a few.
austin1839 yep, they say self sufficient, if you have the money to travel without working. And if you see videos about adventurers, vast majority are white.
i've seen what lifeboats like this cost, if you're fortunate enough to live in a country where people name their kids Austin, you can afford it with a bit of work/saving
I bought an old fucked prototype from 1974 very cheaply, mostly because I couldnt afford rent, fixed it up and lived on it for four years, the last year with my baby. It was a way to save money and live an adventure, and I certainly miss the lifestyle.
The community we lived with were all thinking outside the box, none of us had money:}
of course i do want one like that also. i could be more capable and can do better. but without money, what can i do? lucky for them, they are rich. after their adventure, they can simply scrap it.
@@alfonsosoriano171 Ok maybe, but for example in a financial crash the first thing people get rid of is their boat. In 2009 you could quite literally pick one up for free. And the conversion can happen in tiny increments. It costs less than rent if it happens while you live on it, a bit every day. And the product you have in the end is worth a lot more, so your expenses are covered.
I would say though that the change in lifestyle that is required to achieve this might be more intimidating than anything else, but it suited me perfectly.
There is a whole boat gypsy community out there, very free people for the most part who do not live by societal norms, and usually only see money as a means to an end.
that might be the ugliest boat in existence. and i LOVE it! its brilliant the way theyve put that all together. these guys are out living a life most people dream about. and they did it with their own two hands. makes me yearn for adventure.
After doing a few cruises I have always thought that they would be ideal for something like this
Awesome idea. Never thought them as a boat to go exploring. Now I want one.
They wouldn't have pulled off it without their four legged superviser ; )

When he said, "....and this is ___. We studied architecture together." I legit thought he was introducing the dog.
I so want one of these... To dream, to design, to make real those dreams. You are, all four of you, Amazing! BIG LIKE! BIG SUB! So so cool.
The greatest thing about it is that you don't need to buy a lifeboat. You are already in one!
I love your Dynamism !!!!
Some dogs are luckier than others 😂 what a great life
Amazing work. Great idea. The places this thing can go that other boats can't.. albeit much slower, but that's the point isn't it? Great stuff. Right up my alley.
I think it is the only boat that doesn't require to have a liferaft onboard...
Putera Usman would still want one. You always pack a spare parachute when skydiving.
They do, though.
What a journey
This would be perfect for Great Loop, in of N. America
Absolutely fantastic
Absolutely brilliant and quite a departure from the traditional sailboat "fixer-upper" routine.
Excellent boat and very cool story!!
Do you have some way of stormproofing those enormous perspex windows where the passenger access hatches used to be?
Not to be a party pooper but the seas up in the Arctic and the Barents can be immense.
But now that the doom and gloom stuff is out of the way can I just say what an utterly fantastic job you've made of this conversion.
I'd still be a bit hesitant to sail her on the open ocean but for the purpose you've put her to I can't see it being beaten.
ANTON RUDENHAM
You are quite right. Unless they have addressed the stability issue with a professional naval architect, then the Windows (providing they were designed to withstand the sea and constructed of approved materials) would provide amazing underwater viewing once they're knocked over by waves....
They roll like a pig
If they used polycarbonate it shouldn't be a problem it's more how it's fixed in, but that looks ok.
Thanks for the comment - the windows are 12mm Perspex sandwiched between two layers of aluminium then bolted to the hull. Incredibly strong. We visited the original manufacturer on our way through Norway and they seemed confident it could still roll safely!
I have never seen so many ads in just one video. Anyway, I enjoyed the content.
I think thats kind of the most creative and also the most beautiful boat I ever seen

Hello my friend, can you help me get a job in Deutschland please? :)
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the most hipster boat ever.
@Big Dongle seems to be doing them just fine. We're all here behind a screen and they're out there living it
So flippin awesome , love the colour and the panoramic mid section.
Brilliant
Nice vid and very interesting conversion.. The lifeboat to go for though if ever one came up for sale is an RNLI Severn class which will handle ANY stormy weather! A fully fitted Severn class in service costs around £2.5 million so i expect an ex-RNLI one stripped would still be pretty expensive! Lovely dog...he's gorgeous!
Had a 62ft narrow but wanted a sea-going low enough to go down some canals can't afford it now wish at the time I had considered Alife boat makes so much sense,
You will love Tromsø - the water up there is the clearest I’ve seen in all of Europe. I was there only once but it made a lasting impression on me.
Interesting re-purpose of a lifeboat. If this is the case there's bound to be a number of them available for conversion for a variety of uses. However exploration like this is a wonderful use for it.
Now this is brilliance

Stunning life style ❤❤
Amazing. It's like a floating shipping container.
Pretty awesome and you have a lifeboat on the lifeboat and that's just neat
Very clever. I would feel safe and confident in a boat like yours. I had to sub. I also can’t wait to show my wife. She keeps saying we should slide pontoons under our house (it’s a one bedroom no stairs retirement home).
Simply beautiful and amazing. Job well done guys
A 33 foot boat will need 10-15 hp to go 6 knots. 1 hp = 750 watts with no losses. That means you need at least 8000 watts electric to navigate. Your panels produce 1200? watts under direct sunlight. You must have a very large battery system. You do or do not also use an internal combustion engine?
They must be using the original engine....numbers given just don't add up.....plus there was no reference given to converting it to electric drive, which is really odd if they did convert it
He mentioned that the solar charges the starter battery so there is an engine in there somewhere.
Of course they are using the diesel engine that it came with, they never said or eluded to anything else.
According to the specs for the type it includes a 27 hp engine, gearbox, and a shrouded 18" brass propeller with 195 Liters of fuel.
That's presuming I have correctly Identified it as a Viking Norsafe JYN-100 MKI Davit Launching Lifeboat.
Fantastic conversion guys. Inspiring.
What an amazing journey... and one of the best stories I’ve ever watched on UA-cam.. can’t wait to watch more journey vlogs
Well the title certainly implies it "under solar power"
John Kuijvenhoven I'm just curious as to why you mention this?
@@johnk5k1 are they not powering the electrical equipment with solar and batteries?
This was a really well done piece. Thank you.

And filling each other's ....'gaps' (in life)
Wow!! Super impressed, and super jealous,i've always thought about this same idea, knowing how stable Lifeboats are, makes me want to chase this up now, thanks fellas, great work.
You imply that your voyage was powered by solar alone. Was it? Your website says you did 5,000 km in 5 months so that's 33km per day. Cruising at 6 knots that's three hours cruising per day. To run even a tiny 5kw motor your 900w solar panels would need to be outputting at their full 100% capacity for 17 hours per day. In the real world you are lucky to get 10%. And you say you are running laptops and a microwave too.
Congratulations on a great project, but it would be better if you were honest and upfront about what it can and can't do.
Unless I’ve missed something it’s a life boat ( or an ex life boat) they are diesel powered ( some are petrol powered but most diesel)
What the solar is used for is keeping the batteries topped up ( they mention two systems) domestic this is stuff like lights TV radio ( VHF) GPS kettles etc. The second ( and usually separate so you don’t run your battery flat and can’t start you engine) is the starter battery.
I don’t think anywhere in the video did they imply the boat was solar powered with an electric motor
@@nickyb1822 Er the title of the vid.
@@fatboyshortarms Yep. Trick on the title. But its true, they mention it on the interview.
They run a 100 W solar plant
Absolutely. They also have the solar poorly positioned and have low output panels. Having a flat "table" of regular PV panels would've greatly increased the output. They could also have had a tilt on the "table" greatly increasing output with single axis tracking.
Uber cool and funky. Interesting story and goal, quirky. Thanks for the passenger view. 🚢🛥⛴🛳🚤🛶🚣♀️🚣♂️⛵⚓☠👍👍👍😎
Nice exploration. Hope you boys aren’t poking each other!
Bloody brilliant! Loved all of it, video could’ve been an hour long!
Great idea, fyi towing a dingi costs a lot energy/speed, better hang it on a davids ;-)
I really wanted to hate on this video about it checking all of the globalist agenda boxes - check out our big gay, yellow submarine, tiny house, re-purposed, solar-electric powered, crowd funded, "friend-ship" ....etc. After further research it appears that these are just some good old blokes who are putting their education and friendship to work doing something fun, and meaningful together after 4+ years of hard work getting those walking papers... good on you! My only concerns would be the holes that they cut into a bullet-proof design.
Getting back to your comment. Why would you need a dingy on a boat like this? A couple of fishing kayaks strategically strapped to the boat should be more than enough. I may have missed your point since I fast forward through this kind of still shot montage video that contains zero real information...
@@barking.dog.productions1777 The dinghy can easily be deflated and stored in a quite small space compared to kayaks, besides being more stable and engine-driven out on the water.
@@barking.dog.productions1777 Strapping it to the roof would cover Solar Panels. The idea of having a ships tender allows them to anchor the vessel safely away from shore and row to a beach, either for shops, beach use, exploring or sleeping onshore.
I've been dreaming of getting one of those lifeboats to turn it into a personal boat for a long time now
Great vid, thanks. Will you be doing a boat tour at some point? Does she have a Lugger engine?
Great boat, wonderful adventure! Thanks for sharing. Always wondered about a life vessel, this is fantastic!
Self suficient? How about diesel for that engine? Food? Water? Being able to charge a laptop is not being self suficient...
so what do you want from them? I hope you compost!
Well if you want to be relatively self suficient at sea a mast and sails is probably a good start.
G. Vanputte you know more than me so I agree with you I guess
Chill out mate lol
You've inspired me, I am going to build a boat that harvests everything I need from the ocean. I figure it would be setup to harpoon whales maybe seals if you are in a pinch and then process them for oil for fuel and meat to live on.
I might even use a thermoelectric generator just so I can burn whales for electricity.
Have ridden in a lifeboat. My thinking is ballast and some form of stabilizing is a must otherwise you're going to be puking off the stern endlessly. They pitch and roll more than any other hull form.
10:33 look how small the retriever was, so adorable
It’s a Nova Scotia Duck Toller. A special breed.
I love that the dog's name is Shackleton
This is some great content
Well done guys, two towing lines for the dinghy needed, each attached to separate points and one common point on the dinghy so three points all up on the dinghy, otherwise you'll lose it.
