This scene really gets to me. He turns into that scared abused little boy whenever he sees Peter. I just want to hug him. And when he breaks down and cries OMG, I'm crying too.
I absolutely love how they used Todd's scary music for Peter here! He is the true villain of this entire story. Absolutely subtle but fantastic messaging

Rh should have won an emmy in a great scene around 2001where rh for a whole episode brilliantly acted a whole therapy scene by himself & of course he says " i had a horrible father" the scene ended with him.saying " i hate u peter manning !" Imagine if todd was raised by viki w/ tina b4 they rewrote irene as alive & insane. Todd would have been a brilliant good kid. All todd really wanted was a soul mate & happy family. If he dodnt fail that calc final & peter didnt freak on him he never would have raped marty. I remember him.tellimg marty b4 the rape all he wanted was a sweet job when he graduated i believe so he could stop the football frat boy not smart act & get away from peter & be make a life. Look how much he changed when he was away from petets inflience & got intessive therapy plus powell really showing him what he did to marty & seeing marty clear him of false charges.
@bjujubee - I knew from the first time I saw that father there was a HUGE story under it. When Todd breaks down in this scene, I think it totally helps the audience starts to really care about him and his past and sympathize. Of course, we owe this to perfect writing and great acting.
Peter Manning was such an asshole!! Did any long time viewers from the 70s/80s put the Irene Manning connection together when Todd first came on the scene in 93? It's pretty amazing how this story line developed being that he wasn't originally supposed to be a main character on the show.
In hindsight, I wonder if they shaved off the goatee for this scene between Todd and Peter. Absent the facial hair, Roger looks much younger, and the youthful appearance goes hand in hand with the sudden vulnerability.
Omg that's a great point. At first I thought it was b/c he was back in prison in a scene w/ Zack to remind us of the frat days & early prison but yes rh looks so much younger w/ no facial hair esp given he's only 23/24 here. So once Peter walked in & read this comment it made so great sense. It's like after a year they had todd look like he did during the trial where he had all his first scenes w/ Peter. Anyway Peter really is disgusting. He is a sadist. He hasn't talked to him in a year so he flies from Chicago to tell him off. He already knew his dad cut him off.
I wonder if this scene was filmed previous to Todd breaking out of prison. He looks heavier, like he did back then. He appeared to lose a lot of weight during his time on the run. Has anyone else noticed that he loses and gains weight, which changes his appearance quite a bit, along with the facial hair?
@Ricearoni80 - I disagree about the sexual abuse. Parents that do that to their kids OFTEN claim to care about them, even love them, and show it in various ways. I think the sex abuse storyline is perfect as it matches the psyche we see in The Real Todd Manning. Also, on your "deathbed" you would definitely want to rectify things the best way you can.
I know todd did terrible things but is it any wonder with a sadist like peter for a father. It's sad no matter what Terrible things Peter does to him , todd still loves him.
I hated how the show kind of dropped the Peter Manning abuse story. After RH left in 1998, we never really got an answer on if it was true that he was sexually abused. I personally felt like Todd made it all up but in his mind, the abuse he did suffer was just as bad so it doesn't really matter.
