Because words are easier comprehend than notes. Once you understand the words, the phrasing all comes together. Listen to the original, then listen to this again. You'll get it (maybe?)
@@arnoldfernbladst3875 totally agree Arnold. From the human voice i can hear the choice of notes/modes hit me with a stunning clarity that the played instrument had abstracted too far beyond my comprehension. The singing here is phenomenal and an education

4 men at their PEAK of Signing Abilities, What Miles Davis started , they made into a song FEST. Bill Evans, W.Kelly, M. Davis, J. Coltrane, and the Gr8est TO ME of all, Julian Adderley, of Tampa Area FL, Cannonball , BUT, its Jon Hendricks who placed Lyrics to Music and came up with this masterpiece of SONG from the Amer. Jazz Songbook
I saw these guys perform this years ago on the Arsenio Hall show. The ever humble Jon said he would "attempt" to sing the Coltrane line, 'cause that's all one can ever do with Coltrane. I was also lucky enough to visit Jon in the green room at Philharmonic Hall. He struck me as a wholly genuine guy who is in love with life. What a privilege to be alive at the same time as such a genius!
That had to be awesome! I saw the same show and immediately sought out the cd and bought it! I fell in love with Jon and gained a greater appreciation for Al, Bobby and George. I already loved jazz but to have a CLASSIC like Freddy Freeloader music put into words is indescribable! I am in awe of you for meeting Jon. I would constantly relive that moment! And brag about it any chance I got! Lol
He has a great story of coming home from war and hearing his first be bop song, i think Charlie Parker, on the ship speakers, and paying the guy to play it again and again and again
I tuned the radio to this just before 4m30s when Jon Hendricks does the John Coltrane part. Once I was able to un-twist my brain I was blown away by it, absolutely genius!
It's appropriate that this song is about booze, because trying to sing along with Trane will make anybody sound drunk. Bravo to Jon Hendricks for taking on the challenge!
Jon Hendricks was beyond category. Al Jarreau in February, Jon Hendricks in November, 2017 took half of this magnificent quartet away. Hope Bobby McFerrin and George Benson are doing fine. Thank you for music and words!
hearing this for the first time, at this very moment, on sirius xm. my mom knew i dug eddie jefferson as a little girl, so she put a lambert, hendricks, and ross album in my hand. 52 now and still diggin'. r.i. paradise, mr. h!
I recorded a documentary about the making of this album and song of PBS years ago. I watched the video again and again before going over to the school's resource center to listen to Kind of Blue for the first time. I can't describe the feeling of hearing the instrumental version of these solos after having the vocalese versions already committed to memory. I walked back to my dorm room in a daze. My roomate said "Miles was fuckin' witcha, eh?" Yeah man, for sure.
Jon Hendricks is a great musician. I am a student at the University of Toledo, and Jon Hendricks is the professor of the class i am in -"History of Jazz Class". Its awesome how Jon has worked with many of the musicians we read about in our textbook!!!
@sepiapanorama no problem, man. i've listened to this version hundreds of times and the miles version also. Bobby McFerrin and Al Jarreau's allowed me to internalize a lot of these lines and then i copped the original ones from the miles cut and basically learned how to get through changes with this tune, so it has a special place in my mind forever.
The instrumental version of this song is incredible by itself but when these guys sing the actual words they add the color that makes for a wonderful story.
Beautiful transcription. The delegation of roles to the respective vocalists could not have been more precise! Coltrane's solo is a masterpiece in the art of tonal commentary, his harmonic punctuation (esp. commas & semi-colons) breaks this listeners heart. What a delight!
pandagentile, I've had this recording since it was first released, but I can't tell you how much I enjoyed WATCHING it with the photos you've chosen! I love music from the sublime to the ridiculous! This is ridiculously sublime. Thank you for doing this. :-)
Thelonious Monk: "Hendricks--you the only mother****** I want puttin' lyrics to my music!" And so it is. That's why Jon sings his own lyrics to "In Walked Bud" on Monk's "Underground" album from '66.
@Doumbeck hell yeah, i copped most of this solo by listening to these lyrics and now i regularly use them in my solos and what's great is i can think of these lyrics while i play the licks on guitar even when i change the rhythms.
The Godfather of Vocalise. John Hendricks (1921 - November 22, 2017)
Jon Hendricks wrote the lyrics to this Miles Davis tune way back in the 1960s (when Bobby McFerrin was still a child). It was remade on the 1990 Jon Hendricks album "Freddie Freeloader" and has been performed by a handful of other fine jazz singers (since the Miles, Coltrane, and Cannonball parts are HARD).
@rpatel1289 he is imho, beyond a great musician, he is a musical genius. first of all his lyrics for these solos make 100% sense and secondly, i have yet to hear anyone do a Coltrane solo note for note on an instrument besides sax and hit the tones and rhythms with such authority and precision.
Thank you! Jon's "vocalese" is always wondeful, I love this record, too, by the way, will you give me the lyrics of Wynton Kelly (Bobby McFerrin) - part 4, which part misses on the album note.

Jon Hendricks was beyond category. Al Jarreau in February, Jon Hendricks in November, 2017 took half of this magnificent quartet away. Hope Bobby McFerrin and George Benson are doing fine. Thank you for music and words!
😭😭😭😭
hearing this for the first time, at this very moment, on sirius xm. my mom knew i dug eddie jefferson as a little girl, so she put a lambert, hendricks, and ross album in my hand. 52 now and still diggin'. r.i. paradise, mr. h!
Unique !!!!!!!
I LOVE this comment!!!! Thank you!!!!!
This is the greatest tribute to Miles, Kelly and those others wonderful players that made history that day!
Word
Got goosebumps at 02:20. This is a complete gem; absolutely masterful.
Jon Hendricks is a wonderful jazz master.
Bobby McFerrin just shared this on FB! RIP John Hendricks. Scat cat singing master class right here!
Bobby McFerrin and Al Jarreau's allowed me to internalize a lot of these lines and then i copped the original ones from the miles cut and basically learned how to get through changes with this tune, so it has a special place in my mind forever.
just AMAZING!!! much respect to all these great vocalists flowing with vocalese ease
The instrumental version of this song is incredible by itself but when these guys sing the actual words they add the color that makes for a wonderful story.
yes... it becomes easy and logical to remember the solo singing these wonderful lyrics
Beautiful transcription. The delegation of roles to the respective vocalists could not have been more precise! Coltrane's solo is a masterpiece in the art of tonal commentary, his harmonic punctuation (esp. commas & semi-colons) breaks this listeners heart. What a delight!
This is the best recording I have ever heard. EVER!!
Heard this on WBGO Jazz Radio two nights ago. Absolutely incredible!
I love this song and album!!! And yes, I'm an 80's baby!
I've been performing this type of Jazz since I was 8.I was born 1986
This is pure gold 😍😍😍
Thanks from the heart to the people who write lyrics.. that I couldn't find in the all w.w.w.!! You saved me ;)
This is genius!
Questlove Supreme brought me here. holy cow. Legends' rendition of a legend's composition.. Thank you lord
Always amazing every time I listen
Oh my god I love this so much!
Three of the greatests singers, u gotta love the lyrics and the perfect rendition of each solo
incredible
This is perfection at it's best, and the talent on board here is nothing short of the greatest. These giants out did themselves, and I love it!
I've been lookin for this everywhere!
I love this!!! Thank you for uploading!
pandagentile, I've had this recording since it was first released, but I can't tell you how much I enjoyed WATCHING it with the photos you've chosen! I love music from the sublime to the ridiculous! This is ridiculously sublime. Thank you for doing this. :-)
Thelonious Monk: "Hendricks--you the only mother****** I want puttin' lyrics to my music!" And so it is. That's why Jon sings his own lyrics to "In Walked Bud" on Monk's "Underground" album from '66.
this is so good oh my god
@Doumbeck hell yeah, i copped most of this solo by listening to these lyrics and now i regularly use them in my solos and what's great is i can think of these lyrics while i play the licks on guitar even when i change the rhythms.
I first heard this on a local high school radio station. God bless those kids.
Jon, Al, Bobby McFerrin, George Benson, and a blast was had by all. Their solos match the instrumental. No easy feat.
Al Jarreau brought me here. RIP.
ib
Dat laughter at the end!
Love it!!! Grew up with this! Saw these guys last night at North Sea Jazz @ Rotterdam, Netherlands!
Absolute masterpiece!
yeah....tapping the feet, my hat off...really great performance !!!
Genius!🎶😎
awesome! I love this verion.
Unbelievable! They nail every note! And it's about booze!!!
this is amazing
Awesome Vocalese!
AHHHHHHHHHH! PERFECTION!!!!!
The Godfather of Vocalise.
John Hendricks (1921 - November 22, 2017)
Man!!! These cats are awesome
this is genius
"Pour me a drink
and let me think
raise your glass and make 'em clink
bottoms up
now, I'm ready for the game!"
This should have a million views. But alas, the world is upside down.
rising above narrow confines of Jazz, play me this anytime i am content permanently.
Makes me feel like a butterfly of love. :)
Daaaamn
All love this and I love you people: who transcripts the "lyrics". I tell this from the not english as a mother thong population.
Isso é genial!! Quem são os absurdos que deram unlike nesse vídeo? Cada uma...
i heard this version years before the original. i was like 10 years old. when i heard miles recording, i was confused. i thought it was the cover!
This is what i call "COOL JAZZ"
"He used to be such a solid
stone pillar of his church
he used to be sacrificed
he had his religion."
Top Line!!
This was breath taking my heart almost exploded out of my chest every note seduced my ear drums 🤤🤤
Thats the solo. He nails it. My project is simular except I sing only Miles 5 solos with my words
Folks this is called vocalese singing!!!! Voice instead of horns 🎷 🎶🎺🎵 soak it up ya dig!😎
what a song
Freeeeeedddddiiiiiieeeeeeee
Genius. Decipher these lyrics.
great !!!!!!
Great vocalese.
Yeeeesssssss!!!!!
Man, i can't imagine how hard is to sing it.
And they did it in faster tempo than the original!
wow!
Jon Hendricks wrote the lyrics to this Miles Davis tune way back in the 1960s (when Bobby McFerrin was still a child). It was remade on the 1990 Jon Hendricks album "Freddie Freeloader" and has been performed by a handful of other fine jazz singers (since the Miles, Coltrane, and Cannonball parts are HARD).
my two favs are Bobby and George. they're the best suited to their solos :)
Rest In Peace Jon
One sip and you'll flip
scoobably doobally doblahhh bibi dibi dabidi dahhh
classic
Great
@rpatel1289 he is imho, beyond a great musician, he is a musical genius. first of all his lyrics for these solos make 100% sense and secondly, i have yet to hear anyone do a Coltrane solo note for note on an instrument besides sax and hit the tones and rhythms with such authority and precision.
Thank you! Jon's "vocalese" is always wondeful, I love this record, too, by the way, will you give me the lyrics of Wynton Kelly (Bobby McFerrin) - part 4, which part misses on the album note.
Bobby!!!!! Tis all.
RIP Al Jarreau !
@tyq44 And he "phoned it in" Literally. He was never in the same studio when he recorded his part.
thanks
groovy
suave !
@sepiapanorama while he digs on it non-stop
freakin' impressive vocalese. That shit would be so hard to do.
Approximate lyrics of the four solos:
HE ISN'T GOOD LOOKING
YET HANDSOME
WANT SOME CREDIT?
HE CAN STAND SOME
'CAUSE SERVING DRINKS IS WHAT HE DOES
GROOVIER THAN MOST MEN
ESPECIALLY THE BOPPIN' CATS THAT COME IN
'CAUSE FREDDIE REALLY LOVES THAT THING CALLED BEBOP
LET THE CATS DRINK EVERY DROP
WHILE HE DIGS ON IT NONSTOP
SO CATS ARE LINED UP AT HIS BAR
WITH THROAT'S DRY
KNOWING THAT THAT'S THE PLACE
WHERE FREDDIE CAN TAB AND GET YOU HIGH
WITHOUT EVER WORRYIN' 'BOUT PAYMENT
PAYMENT'LL COME FROM THE ENDLESS MYRIAD OF OTHER SQUARES
SO YOU'LL NEVER EVER HAVE TO EVER THINK ABOUT IT
JUST SETTLE ON DOWN TO SOME DRINKIN'
YOUR TAB'S ALL PAID
LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL
AND POUR ME ANOHER DRINK
HERE'S A TOAST TO OLD FREDDIE
A CAT
THAT'S HIP TO WHERE IT WAS
AND WHERE IT'S AT
HE USED TO BE SUCH A SOLID STONE PILLAR OF THE CHURCH
HE USED TO BE SANCTIFIED
HE HAD HIS RELIGION
BUT NOW IT'S THE DEVIL'S OWN WORK HE DOES DISPENSING SPIRIT
MEANWHILE OF HIS OWN THERE IS ONLY THE TINIEST SMIDGEN
SO DRINK AND IF HE SUFFERS A BREAKDOWN WHERE HE'S WRONG
AND NOW MY CAT THAT KNOWS THAT HE'S FIX UP SOMETHING FOR YOU
SOON AS THAT HE'S LOOKING FOR A DROP
IT'S SUCH A BREW
YOU'LL NEED ANOTHER ONE TO HELP HE'LL BRING YOU TWO
WELL I HEARD HIM SAY THAT
SPEAKIN' THAT FREDDIE'S GOT THE
UGLY KIND OF FACE
THAT ONLY A MUG COULD OWN
BUT I KNOW FREDDIE DON'T PLAY THAT
THERE'S THIS CAT
HIS NAME IS FREDDIE
THIS CAT'S A BARTENDER
WELL KNOWN BY ANYONE HIP
HE CAN MIX THE KIND OF DRINK THAT YOU WON'T FORGET
ONE SIP AND YOU'LL FLIP
THEN FOR CHASERS
FREDDIE'S GOT SOME STUFF FOR HIP LIPS
GROOVY STUFF FOR YOUR CUP
LET THE FLOW GO
GET DOWN, DRINK IT UP
I SWEAR HE MADE IT UP HIMSELF
AND IT'LL HYPNOTIZE AN ELF
THEM DRINKS THAT FREDDIE MIX
AIN'T NO AILMENT THEY WON'T FIX
FOR EACH EMOTION
FREDDIE'S GOT A POTION
HE'S KNOWN TO HAVE YOU OSSIFIED
BEFORE YOU KNOW YOU'VE EVEN TRIED
JUST MENTION HIS NAME
ALL THE CATS KNOW FREDDIE
HE SERVES ONE
SO FREDDIE DESERVES ONE
'CAUSE TENDIN' BAR THE WAY THAT FREDDIE DOES
HE CLAIMS IT UNNERVES ONE
SO ALL DAY
JUICERS ALL PAY FREDDIE
BUT ALL THAT BREAD
DON'T REACH THE TILL
THOUGH I AIN'T SAYIN' FREDDIE'S STEALIN'
IF YOU KNOW HIM AT ALL
THEN IT'S A CINCH THAT YOU KNOW HE WILL
EVER-READY FREDDIE
WELL HE POURS SO STEADY
I'VE SEEN HIM SINK ONE DRINK
'FORE THE NEXT CAT WAS READY
HE'S GOT A STYLE THAT'S SO WELL-KNOWN
FREDDIE'S ON TOUCH
REALLY TOO MUCH
IT'S ALL HIS OWN
Speakin of Freddie
Who the hell is he?
An what is Freddie t'me?
An what's this I hear
About the kind of a bar he's tendin
So he tends a groovy bar
So there you are
Forget it
To me it coudn't mean a thing 'n I would count myself a fool
to let it
I've had it up to my ear with Freddie
A little o'Freddie is really heady
You know
that alcohol'll make an ordinary fella's min' unsteady
It's in the book
You c'n read it (if y'ever sober up enough t'wanna take a look)
You, y'settled int' alcoholic use
And getting ign'unt oil to swirl around and cut you down
And suckin' up the juice
'N' it ain't never ever gonna turn y' loose
Y' stupid rummy
You see the hole in y' head?
The cats that do what you do 're dead
Remember that!
Now y'know
So take it slow, you'll find y'gonna
Have a longer row t' hoe
And so I say you gotta play another way
You oughta add a little depth to your attitude
And exercise your mind
If y' do you probably will find
That fame ain' nothin' but pride 'n' illusion
Who's up 'n who's down is all facade
I tell ya
While we're whirlin' on our axle
At a thousan' miles a minute
While we think we're standin' still
When y'think of that it's kinda peculiar
Even so, y'oughta know
But alcohol is eatin' up your brain
Otherwise it wouldn't function quite as slow
Think of this
You're not a body but a mind
A revelation
Don't resist, your body's servin' as a colour-blind
Secretin' your immortal soul
Ah, what bliss
You're free, you're free, you really are
To join y' heart and y' mind to your soul, that's the goal
Then the soul is the one you heed
Food for thought is all the body will need
That'll give you the sky, and keep you high forever
An' lots of people tend to think
All they ever have to do's
light a joint'r take a drink
T'reach the same euphoric brink
Forget it!
It never will be so, 'cause alcohol an' them narcotics
'll never do the trick
Y'either gotta do it like I said
Or mess y'body up by shootin' stuff 'n gittin sick
Don't ever listen to your intellect
'Cause intellect abominates the spirit
There, I know I'm making my position clear
If man would only up his inner ear and hear
Few men ever do
I've heard what you said
An' it stays in my head
Well lemme tell y' my impression
Everything y' said is straight ahead
Absolutely, indeed
It sure needs thinkin' about
I'm jus' tryin' t'figure it out
I wouldn't really believe it if I hadn't really heard it
Pretty much o' what I heard is indefinable to me
And I really need t'see the relationship
Between another fella's soul and his body
Somebody's gonna have t' make it clear to me
How havin' a teensy-weensy itsy-bitsiest taste with Freddie
Is apt t'make a fella's life unsteady
So pour me a drink 'n lemme think
Raise y'glass, make'em clink
Bottoms up
Now I'm ready for the game
Might as well get in it 'cause by laying out I'm never gonna win it
Let's have a party, drinkin' hearty
Gonna drink up 'till we drop
Lemme have another one, that's the trick
Y'want it with soda or y'wanna drink it straight
Way y'burpin' got me thinkin' maybe it might'a been somethin' you ate
Relax 'n let's drink steady it's on freeload Freddie
Drink up, everybody, thanks t'Freddie
I'm talkin''bout Freddie, 'cause Freddie is steady
Talkin''bout coppin' his buddy some booze
Wanna get drunk f'free?
That's easy, Freddie'll pop a little
Take it off the top a little, so his boss'll never even miss it
Drink up, it's Freddie's treat
You buy one, he'll give y'one
Acquaintances never leave Freddie's dry
You're never really ever gonna find a cheaper high
I'm tellin' the truth, yeah
I'm sittin' right here one evenin'
Just coolin, I'm tellin'y'man I was broke
'N'bout t'beg me a drink an' that's no joke
That's when ol' Freddie spoke 'n' he said:
Don't worry 'bout it, man
'Cause I can dig it that' you got a thirst goin' without it, man
I'm here t'tell you there is nothing worse
That's the reason why I'm inclined t' let a fella freeload
Because of that they call me Freddie Freeloader
Thank you!!
🙌🏾

@sepiapanorama Could you please post Bobby McFerrin's solo lyric, or tell me where I can find it?

@petter Dalane Have you found the lyrics by chance. I'm looking for Benson 's part.
You can get it off the internet.....

I would love you forever if someone knew the Miles Davis lyrics or the rest of Wynton Kellys? currently trying to learn this tune and having trouble with some of the lyrics

Have a longer row t' hoe
And so I say you gotta play another way
You oughta add a little depth to your attitude
And exercise your mind
If y' do you probably will find
That fame ain' nothin' but pride 'n' illusion
Who's up 'n who's down is all facade
I tell ya
While we're whirlin' on our axle
At a thousan' miles a minute
While we think we're standin' still
When y'think of that it's kinda peculiar
Even so, y'oughta know
But alcohol is eatin' up your brain
Otherwise it wouldn't function quite as slow
Think of this
You're not a body but a mind
A revelation
Don't resist, your body's servin' as a colour-blind
Secretin' your immortal soul
Ah, what bliss
You're free, you're free, you really are
To join y' heart and y' mind to your soul, that's the goal
Then the soul is the one you heed
Food for thought is all the body will need
That'll give you the sky, and keep you high forever
An' lots of people tend to think
All they ever have to do's
light a joint'r take a drink
T'reach the same euphoric brink
Forget it!
It never will be so, 'cause alcohol an' them narcotics
'll never do the trick
Y'either gotta do it like I said
Or mess y'body up by shootin' stuff 'n gittin sick
Don't ever listen to your intellect
'Cause intellect abominates the spirit
There, I know I'm making my position clear
If man would only up his inner ear and hear
Few men ever do
I've heard what you said
An' it stays in my head
Well lemme tell y' my impression
Everything y' said is straight ahead
Absolutely, indeed
It sure needs thinkin' about
I'm jus' tryin' t'figure it out
I wouldn't really believe it if I hadn't really heard it
Pretty much o' what I heard is indefinable to me
And I really need t'see the relationship
Between another fella's soul and his body
Somebody's gonna have t' make it clear to me
How havin' a teensy-weensy itsy-bitsiest taste with Freddie
Is apt t'make a fella's life unsteady
So pour me a drink 'n lemme think
Raise y'glass, make'em clink
Bottoms up
Now I'm ready for the game
Might as well get in it 'cause by laying out I'm never gonna win it
Let's have a party, drinkin' hearty
Gonna drink up 'till we drop
Lemme have another one, that's the trick
Y'want it with soda or y'wanna drink it straight
Way y'burpin' got me thinkin' maybe it might'a been somethin' you ate
Relax 'n let's drink steady it's on freeload Freddie
Drink up, everybody, thanks t'Freddie
I'm talkin''bout Freddie, 'cause Freddie is steady
Talkin''bout coppin' his buddy some booze
Wanna get drunk f'free?
That's easy, Freddie'll pop a little
Take it off the top a little, so his boss'll never even miss it
Drink up, it's Freddie's treat
You buy one, he'll give y'one
Acquaintances never leave Freddie's dry
You're never really ever gonna find a cheaper high
I'm tellin' the truth, yeah
I'm sittin' right here one evenin'
Just coolin, I'm tellin'y'man I was broke
'N'bout t'beg me a drink an' that's no joke
That's when ol' Freddie spoke 'n' he said:
Don't worry 'bout it, man
'Cause I can dig it that' you got a thirst goin' without it, man
I'm here t'tell you there is nothing worse
That's the reason why I'm inclined t' let a fella freeload
Because of that they call me Freddie Freeloader
Does anyone know the lyrics of the main melody (not the solos)? I can't find it anywhere. @sepiapanorama can you help me?
Manuela Oliveira Check out the man that write the original lyrics, Eddie Jefferson.
I believe Jon Hendricks is the responsible party for this one
Listen to Eddie Jefferson do it !!
lol, this sounds like a Wayne Brady scat style improv about some guy from the audience of Whose Line named Fred... occupation: currently between jobs...
no go back to sleep
