Cambridge trialled cleaver blades in training for the 1992 race, but decided to use macon blades in the end - therefore their first use in the boat race was in 1993 by Cambridge. They had been used by the top few crews in the Cambridge May Bumps in 1992
Oxford's macons. That was their last time I think. I am from Cambridge this crew were my idols. Was in New York in the late 1990s and bumped into Jon Bernstein in Manhatten. "Wow! Are you Jon Bernstein?" He was really nice and I told him I was lost and he very kindly took time to help me find my way.
Well although i can't say i know the full physics behind it, but cambridge has newer more modern style blades which many still use today, where as oxford are using old style blades. So one would assume that the newer more modern style blades are infact better, as technology naturally progresses
John G No the blades don’t account for the class act that was Cambridge that year who were so much better at getting to the right and longish rhythm - that’s what accounts for Cambridge’s superb win!

Cambridge also had to overcome the huge aerodynamic disadvantage of their 2 man's hair.
