The best part about this clip is the very faint "yes!" you hear after Renteria makes contact. It's like that person knew it would be a base hit. Awesome.
Joe Smith to be fair Indians were a Cinderella team out of the AL. 86 wins and had just lost Belle and Lofton. But yeah Florida was definitely the massive underdog in the WS.
@@josephhale9198 yeah only reason they were wild card is they played in the same division as the braves. only the best regular season team of that era.

Craig Counsell if I have my facts straight, played in the two most recent World Series to be decided on the final at-bat since he would later be a member of the Arizona Diamonbacks when they beat the Yankees in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series.
Love the moment between Leyland & Bonilla. They had some good runs in Pittsburgh but couldn't get it done. Glad to see them get their championship together years later.
My family big Mets fans but big baseball fans. First day moving into my childhood house at the time this was the first thing we watched on tv with my grandma who just loved sports. Good for Jimmy he was a good manager
How the MLB managed to destroy one of the most lovable underdog franchises in sports and reduce it to a blank shell of its former awesomeness while the baseball world did nothing but blame the city of Miami and Marlins fans still makes me incredibly furious beyond belief. It's time we make the Marlins a real franchise again and bring back the ghosts of the old 1997 team. My God, they and the 2003 squad were one of the most lovable teams ever.
I remember the moment this happened. I was with my dad trying to get home to catch the ending of the game. We were at a Farm Store location on 44th street and University Dr listening to the game on the radio. I will never forget it.

The state of Florida had the very best year in sports in 1997. Florida and Florida State were both in the Sugar Bowl national championship game and the Florida Marlins were in the World Series.
this is the first world series i watched. i was 9 years old, and played little league--on the Indians. i remember when that ball sneaked into center field, and i sprinted from the room crying. and now my Dodgers just forced game 7 in the world series :)
Fun fact. Renteria got the game and series winning hit on an 0-1 pitch I. This game. Seven years and a day later, on a 1-0 pitch in St. Louis, Renteria made the game/series losing out.
2 of my 93 Phillies were on this team. I defected to the Marlins when Eisenreich and Daulton came to the Fish. I even have an Eisenreich Marlins jersey.
In all my years of being a Cleveland sports fan I have had many gut wrenching moments. This one by far is the most haunting. Worse than the drive. Worse than the fumble. Worse than the 95 and 16 World Series. I have seen this replay maybe 5 times since and every time I have to turn it off the second I see the ball clip Nagy’s glove.
Either him or Alou. Livan was the least deserving postseason MVP in quite some time, and there would not be another undeserving postseason MVP for another 25 years.
It’s really a shame that the very next year, they went 54-108, the worst follow up season for a defending World Series championship in MLB history. (The worst follow up year for a team that MADE the World Series was the 1915 Philadelphia Athletics, who went 43-109 after going 99-53 the previous year, making it to the World Series, but losing in an upset sweep to the Boston Braves)
I remember the cars honking and flashing their lights on the road, down in little Havana the Cubans banging pots and pans. Finally my father pissed that he had to go down town at 5 in the AM to pick up a few 100 T-Shirts for JcPenney's. He was one of the mangers that was picked to go downtown and get them so the store would have them for sale when it opened.

MANCHESTER UNITED F.C we don’t care what other countries think, baseball is way better than soccer.
The Marlins then were perfect whenever they got to the postseason and then they snapped the streak since the name change!
If Nagy had caught that, would've gone to the 12th inning. Truly is a game of inches.
DVJFan there was 2 outs Einstein. Gregg Zaun pop out bunt and the out at home to get Bobby Bonilla out of Devon White grounded to second
Moskarr damn thsts close wouldnt expect that from baseball lol, 2002 world series game 6 was great too
DVJFan Pay attention Einstein, It clearly states on the screen in the first second of the video that there were 2 outs.
DVJFan look at the scoreboard in the beginning lmao
Earlier in the inning, Tony Fernandez missed a ball hit in the hole closer to first base by inches for an error, too.
The only time the Marlins been to the playoffs was twice and both resulted in them winning the world series
until 2020 now
Both times on a wild card.

Only to have a mass exodus of their roster dispersed all over the Majors the following season.
