This is the reason why SNSD shot to the top in 2009 and stayed there. They got everyone’s attention, broke records, and went viral with Gee, but then later in the year they cemented their place in the top by releasing Genie. Genie was everywhere back in then. People were so doing so many covers on TV all the time. Super Junior did, as well as 2PM and SHINee lol. SNSD even used to collaborate with SHINee, who were promoting Juliette at the time, during live performances. SNSD got to dance with SHINee in Juliette, then SHINee showed up to do a sexy remix of Genie with them. Good times. :)

So here is a funny story. SNSD and "Genie" in particular are the reason why I got into K-pop. And how did it all start, you may ask? Was it a friend recommending me it? Me stumbling upon it on UA-cam? Nah fam, it all started from League of Legends. I can pinpoint the exact moment because Popstar Ahri came out that day. It was November 25th, 2013 and I saw this skin and I was like man that is cool as shit I wanna buy it. Then I went to the forums and people were saying the skin was inspired by this Korean girl pop group called Girls Generation and some were saying it was inspired specifically by a member called Jessica. They were also mentioning how the clothes matched theirs in "Genie". So my curious ass went to UA-cam and typed in "Girls Generation-Genie" I found the video, I watched it and I instantly fell in love. I thought omg this is like a Korean Spice Girls or something haha (since I had nothing to compare it to at the time) and I ended up just watching all their MVs released up until that point. At first I thought the language sounded a bit strange but I quickly got used to it. The next group I checked out was 2NE1. At first I thought I would only like girl groups but then I started falling for the guy groups too and K-pop just became a way of life. I met amazing people in the town I lived in at the time and there was even a cafe we would go to every Friday and listen to K-pop, it truly changed my life! I owe so much to Girls Generation, they brought the gift of K-pop to my life, they are forever my nr 1 girl group in my heart. I am also in debt of that LoL forum and whoever mentioned them and peaked my curiosity to check them out. So yeah, "Genie" and Girls Generation have a special place in my heart forever!
