Zodiac Signs: There are 12 zodiac signs. They are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Butterfly, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Zodiac signs are also called “animals hidden in each person’s heart,” which originated from the custom of humans worshipping animals in totem society.
They believed that animals that live together, even if they are insignificant, have a similar and related relationship with humans. For example, a tribe that believed in bears as gods believed that bears were their ancestors, and a tribe that believed in squirrels as gods believed that squirrels were their tribe’s gods.
Korean mythology was no exception. In the Dangun myth, the wedding ceremony between the bear and Hwanung symbolized the fusion of the order (culture) of heaven and the order (culture) of the earth.
Human religions became more scientific and sophisticated when numbers were discovered, and they became more systematic. They believed that when the positive numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 were combined with the negative numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10, harmony and mutual prosperity would occur. This is the so-called yin-yang theory.
In Korean, 1 means ‘one.’ In addition to meaning one [一], one is also used to mean big, wide, and many. A greater discovery is the number 0 (空·無·zero).
0 is the number of ‘infinity.’ 1 is also large and large, so adding 0 must be the largest number. Thus, the number 10 is the number of heaven (甲乙丙…), and the number 12 is the number of the earth (子丑寅…).
It is said that humans came up with the decimal system as a basic numeral system because humans have 10 fingers. Humans are beings created from the principles of heaven and earth, and they came to have a view of life that they can be happy through their power, harmony, and cooperation. In other words, humans were seen as beings who live in harmony with the power of heaven and earth, that is, the principles of yin and yang. Because of this philosophy of life, the sky was considered the god of heaven and the earth the god of the earth, and even animals in the natural world were worshipped as spirits or divine beasts.
In the meantime, the 12 zodiac signs combined with the 12 branches were worshipped as guardian deities and efforts were made to live their lives like spirits.
    Zodiac signs and Buddhism
Buddhism is considered to have had a great influence on this, and this is the setting of the 12 good gods who mastered the 12 great vows of Bhaisajyaguru, the Bhaisajyaguru Twelve Generals. Gungpira Daejang (宮毘羅大將) is a god with a wish to make his body and others shine with all his heart, as a god of the rat (子神) who has the desire to enlighten them. Beoljeola Daejang (伐折羅大將) is a god of the ox (丑神) who has great virtue and the desire to enlighten all living beings. Migira Daejang (迷企羅大將) is a god of the tiger (寅神) who has the desire to make all living beings satisfied with their desires and not lack anything. Anjeola Daejang (安底羅大將) is a god of the rabbit (卯神) who has the desire to make all living beings enter the Mahayana teachings. Also, Anvira Daejang (安備羅大將) is a dragon god named Jinsin (辰神) who has the wish to have all living beings create clean karma and keep all precepts, Sanjeora Daejang (珊底羅大將) is a snake god named Sasin (巳神) who has the wish to have all the disabled have all their roots perfect, Indala Daejang (因達羅大將) is a horse god named Oshin (午神) who has the wish
