The Gabe thing wasn't a change, it's him in the book too. The thing is, we're scared of book Gabe, but not this new Gabe, so it was kind of weird.
Most of that is because we see Gabe through Percy’s thoughts n in the books, but the show doesn’t have that luxury. We’ll have to see what they do with Gabe, cause there’s plenty of time to reveal/develop his character
This is the one thing i wish they would have changed, because it makes the oracle/ prophecy look ridiculous :/

He was honestly nothing to be worried about like in fact he honestly wasn’t bad enough for what happened to him to happen
so many people are surprised by smelly gabe delivering the prophecy, but it was almost like that in the book. i say almost, because in tlt he (and his poker friends) talked in oracle voice, which for me would make the whole scene much more sinister
That’s true, I totally forgot! I just never pictured it sounding like that 😂
The thing is they should have either kept Gabe and use his oracle voice like in the books to make it more mystical and scary/real or just make it like the movie and just having the Oracle making the prophecy. This was just silly imo which is not a good thing because it's the one thing I think should be more serious because it's like the building block of the whole book. Imagine the edits that could have been made but now it will just be silly because it's just a normal white man voice (smelly gabe voice) :/

This was my fav episode so far and these are my thoughts:
Jessica was the perfect actress for Medusa and her voice was so soothing. I really liked what they did with Medusa in general and honestly for me. She’s an icon like now she’s one of my favourite characters. I’m also really glad that we got to see more of Annabeth because she’s my favourite character. And I liked the change they made to how Percy killed Medusa and it just showed how witted and strategic Annabeth is.
The actress for Medusa was really good casting!
I only fear that they stole some moments from Percy to give to others, because if i'm remembering right, it was percy's idea how he killed Medusa. If im right, of course.

Also it's really good that they introduced the concept of the gods not being perfect and ignoring their children early as it's rly important for the whole plot over the 5 books, and also for the non-bool viewers to understand
Watching the scene where Percy told Grover "I chose you" I had "Tree on the Hill" playing in my head especially at Annabeth's pre-quest scene

10:00 about Annabeth talking to the fury, I have a theory: She held her invisible knife to her throat and that’s why Mrs Dodds talks to her. Like idk for me this makes it slightly better than them just casually talking. I still wasn’t super intimidated by the fury.
Grover’s consensus song gave me in the same boat vibes i loved it and couldn’t stop laughing :D

loooooved all the Percy and Annabeth interactions and I CANNOT wait till the tunnel of love , plus it was so cute when Percy didn’t hesitate to chose annabeth for his quest im getting some serious percabeth vibes right here

I love the scene of Percy talking to Luke and be totally honest on exactly how he thinks of him and admitting to him that he prioritizes saving his mom over the quest. The amount of trust😢

watched it last night, the chapter of Aunty Ems emporium is one of my alllll time favourite chapters because it kind of started the whole classic pjo scene and I kinda wished it was more similar to the books in the way that aunty Ems restaurant had that more late night, city restaurant food vibe if yk what I mean instead of the kinda homey kitchen vibe😭 I also wish it was more similar in the way that aunty em being discovered as Medusa in Percy’s eyes/ pov because I remember it being such a plot twist for me but she kinda just straight up announced it. Still pretty solid episode I can’t wait for the next oneeeeeeee

I think its really great that the show toned down the abuse with gabe and assault of medusa its harder to see that on the big screen than in a book. it also would've been impossible for Percy to forgive Poseidon if he lets his mother be abused for years and that Poseidon himself assaulted a woman for no reason at all

Only problem though; Sally is going to look like a monster if she murders Gabe at the end of the series.

I think that whilst there are changes, I'm still liking this adaptation because it's got the heart of the characters right and the book are there to be 100% accurate. There are things that work on page that don't on screen, so I'm just hoping that it works as a fully cohesive tv show and does well enough for all the sequels!

both the gabe thing and the fates being the thing that got thalia and not the cyclopes was actually accurate. the cyclops layer just delayed them so the monsters caught up. lots of people seemed to think the same as you though and i think we all need a reread lol

@@Unclaimeddemigod it happens to the best of us 🩵 i rediscover something every time i read them. just recently found out that annabeth was a parallel for andromeda in many instances.
Honestly I’m thinking of auditioning for Ethan later on bc it would be a dream come true to meet Rick, the cast and to be a part of an adaptation for one of my favourite book series. Although currently it feels like false hope since I have no experience with acting and getting an agent and all that is very complicated and a lot of work. (Not to mention they might already have someone for the role)

Honestly I was relieved that they changed the Medusa reveal because it was so obvious to me. Halfway through the scene with all the statues and hissing sounds, I thought it had to be Medusa, though in this book, Percy wouldn't know common sense unless it slapped him in the face.
I was yelling at them that it had to be Medusa, and I love how they changed Medusa, my favorite episode fr.
I liked this episode, but Medusa not being able to petrify with the cap doesn't make sense, and also where are the fire whips of all three furies, and are they really going to distribute Percy's kills to other people here, because in books he kills Furies and medusa with his sword, and annabeth talking to fury that part of the entire conversation was completely weird and not how it would have played out at all.
Probably th thing hb putting annabeth's hat on medusa's head is some sort of reference to how perseus killed her in th original myths or smth
Jessica Parker Kennedy was great Medusa she actually made me feel so bad for her even though I knew she was gonna go evil AF eventually Lol , also why did my idiot self actually think we were gonna see Olympus at the end of this episode when we are only on episode 3 😂, I can't wait for episode 4 next week this show keeps getting better and better 🔥
I agree, the actress for Medusa really nailed the performance, both soothing and slightly creepy at the same time!

Well, people already said it, but Gabe saying the prophecy wasn't a change, it's in the books. Also, Thalia wasn't killed by cyclops in the book, but in the movie. The thing is that they got trapped in a cyclops maze, so it gave time for the other monsters who were chasing them to catch up, including the furies
I agree that Annabeth looked very hurt when he said she never thought she would be his friend. Even Percy sees that and kind of apologizes. But I guess she also understands that she really didn't treat him like someone she wants to be friends with.
The Oracle did have an Image of Gabe telling the prophecy in the book so it’s actually book accurate
The fury thing wasn't changed either. The cyclops happened on their way, but that merely delayed them, giving the furies time to catch up with them and Thalia made her final stand there
that's why Annabeth hated cyclopes
^Was coming to the comments to say this as well :) They got stuck in a cyclops’ layer in New Jersey (I think?) and the cyclops lured Thalia and Luke each to get trapped using each others voices, and then Annabeth had to rescue Thalia by herself, and then Thalia took down the cyclops and rescued Luke, so that’s why Annabeth hates cyclopes
I had “Lost” from the tlt musical running through my head when they were in the woods. But besides that I thought the episode was pretty good!

they really thoight of everything, like how it wld make sense that they knew Aunty Em was Medusa from the start and how they defeated Alecto. that's what makes this exciting. theyre gunna make sensible changes but still keep thr core

I’m kind of annoyed at the people who just genuinely only have complaints for this show like some of it I get but no one can deny that one this is a much better adaptation and that two this show is still meant for a younger audience I’ve seen quite a few videos hating on it and it just kinda gets on my nerves
0:59 Gabe was the one that delivered the prophecy in the book. The only change is he did not alternate lines with his poker buddies and not using the oracle’s voice.🤷🏻♂️
I totally agree with all what you’re mentioning. I really hope the show gets darker and scarier with every season

Just wanted to clear up the misunderstanding that she’s is originally a sympathetic character, enjoy whatever version you want. There are a lot of versions of the Medusa story, but in the originals she’s not a vicitim. SHE pursued Poseidon and got freaky in Athena’s temple, then got punished for it.
The full victim version of the story has no real mythological version, except partially Ovid’s, it’s a very modern change. In the books she is not a victim, he’s using Hesiod’s version.

Here’s my opinion, before i say anything i want to say sorry first cause some of you guys might not agree with my opinion but, I was a bit disappointed because what was said was "book accurate" but there were also a lot of scenes in the book that weren't there and to be honest, Annabeth is not like that, she's not that boring. She also never actually explained whats her plan was after winning capture the flag, why? For all we know she just let percy get attacked for no reason. In the book Annabeth makes a cunning plan to make Percy bait for Clarisse. It doesn’t exist in the show.
Also luke and annabeth’s relationship? That doesn’t even seem like brother sisterly relationship. Is an atrocious writing choice since their relationship is so important for the rest of the series, they should have kept the scene where he hugs her before she leaves for the quest.
Percy was supposed to get 1 month of training at camp and then go on a mission. The scene where Percy feels finally accepted and feels comfortable and has friends in the Hermes cabin and then he feels alone again after moving to the Poseidon cabin should be an important part too, how Percy feels that Camp Halfblood is the first place where he feels like he is accepted, where he felt that was where he belonged.
After Percy was claimed, a hellhound appeared because Luke called it but no one knew it was him. I was waiting for dialogues like "Gover, wow, are you half donkey?!" Then Grover got angry and said "I'm a satyr! The satyrs might get offended if you talk like that.” And there isn't even a fight scene with Medusa, in the book it's really exciting and cool, the scene on the bus should have been longer and more tense, the bus is on fire and Percy is being looked for by the human police.
The Percy vs Luke scene when Luke teaches Percy to use a sword and then Luke is shocked because There's no way Percy can beat him after he doused himself with water, in the book Percy and Annabeth don't meet in the bathroom from the start. Annabeth has been told to show Percy around and during the scene in the bathroom, Annabeth is supposed to get wet by the water too and she gets angry.
In the book, Grover doesn't become a traitor by testifying that Percy pushed Nancy. When Percy was expelled from school, Grover even said he had to follow Percy home and Percy left Grover at the terminal because Percy felt it was strange why Grover really wanted to go home with him.
The action scenes are really lacking. And the reason Percy chose Grover and Annabeth to go on the mission with him was not because Percy thought he would be betrayed, but because Annabeth insisted on going. The scene where Percy sends Medusa's head to Olympus in the book has a more brazen impression, its because he’s so angry by the gods and his own father not because Percy cares about Annabeth's hat 😒 and Percy shouldn't be able to get wet unless he asks for his body to be wet (okay maybe because that's a bit difficult to do on a TV show).
And don’t make me started with the gabe situation. All i’m gonna say is that In the book he deserves to be a statue, I don’t think the gabe in the show deserves it.
I think having longer eps really would’ve helped with most of these issues, maybe if we get a second season we’ll get longer eps (which will help with the story)

I feel like the show is going to go the Harry Potter route of getting darker with each movie/season. Considering that we don’t get an actual named characters death until the third book/season it would make sense why this season feels a little lighter. The books kinda already do this. The Last Olympian is a much darker story than The Lightning Thief.

Yeah the action scenes are pretty fast in the show but they are also that fast in the books too.
Fans out there complaining about the drama between Grover and Percy,or Annabeth and Percy,might not know that in Lord of the Rings,there's drama between heroes that wasn't in the book either. After all,Percy and Grover are just a shadow of Frodo and Samwise.

We like the additional drama between Percy and Annabeth, in the books it felt a little more told and not shown that there was a lot of tension between them (it has been like 10 years since our last re-read tho lol) so it's nice to feel even more build up to one of the most iconic couples in fiction.

The commercial breaks dont bug me at all. Almost every show has those fade to black commercial break segments.
Ok so my personal opinion of this episode was that it was pretty good all things considered but two things kinda stood out to me as less than favorable (completely subjective) I think Percy’s actor did a great job when he was being the Percy we all know and love, but there are a lot of moments (mostly in episode two but still here a little) where he feels more like a zombie going through the motions of a plot rather than the protagonist. This isn’t really an acting issue as much as it’s a writing issue I get that it’s a lot harder to adapt all the inner dialogue that showed Percy for who he was and that some things have to change and the process is difficult and all that and personally idk how I would change it if I would, it’s more of an unfortunate but necessary… what’s the word I’m looking for here… idk but my point is, when Percy is being more… zombie like (?) I don’t love the performance. Again everything else is really good regarding Percy and Grover. As for Annabeth (no this isn’t a looks thing I could not care less what they look like) she feels… off? Kinda like a similar but different character and I like that character, but she doesn’t quite feel like Annabeth yet. I’m fully aware it takes time to get used to characters in acting and that it’s still too early to form permanent opinions so I’m holding off on forming them yet, I’m really hoping that she sells me on her as Annabeth because I do like her as an actor so far and I think she has all the tools to be an amazing Annabeth (not to say she’s doing a bad job either this is all sounding a lot more negative than I intended) it’s just not quite there yet for me. Wow that ended up being so incredibly long lol if you read all of it, thanks! If not, understandable I wouldn’t either. Again these are all just my very unprofessional opinions so idk what I’m talking about, I’m just going off of vibes mostly
I much prefer this going from book to screen than harry potter. I'm enjoying the series so far and its nice to see the characters on screen.

It wasn’t Grover wanting to go. He had to to get his searchers license. He hadn’t officially earned it because Percy had to drag him over the camp line so it wasn’t looked at as he officially succeeded in his protecting of Percy.

This review was painful to watch. First you not knowing that the smoke turned into Gabe was a thing in the books and then your insistent mispronounciation of Thalia's name. Come on.
