No shoes also means more traction on that slippery wet grass.

100% agree with you. I say that's why the Kern and Fin had no shoes.

Happy birthday Philip, hope you had a nice one.
I would nitpick your timing of the introduction of runners in 1960's. The running revolution as a hobby doesn't really start until the late 60's, early 70's in the U.S. Even in the 80's and 90's runners were seen as a lesser shoe, which would prevent you getting into some pubs. For the change over to shoes being worn all the time in the countryside I'd look more to more roads getting tarmaced over and changing social convention with mass media.
On the shoes as coffins thing, you can buy shoes with a wide toebox and zero drop or no heal to get around that.

Personally I've walked around on ground much less comfortable than the boggy ground of Ireland barefoot because I like the feel of the earth between my toes its a pleasure that most people have forgotten.

When I was a kid I used to run around barefoot all the time. Over rocks and gravel etc. No problem. Of course finding a random thorn here and there kind of sucked. 😅

Hey happy Birthday! So on the side I do larping and there is some people who fight barefoot. Now in the games I play your shoes have to look medieval but don't have to be. Like mine are leather shoes from wulflund but they have a thin rubber sole on it. But its hard to have good fighting footwear that even looks medieval so many will go barefoot because like you've said in earlier videos it gives traction for dynamic footwork a duelist would use. Eventually I'll try it myself but I know others who've seen people get broken toes and step on things that our ancestors wouldn't have dealt with (i.e. broken glass, pieces of plastic, etc.).

Well, broken glass is 100% something you should put first. So that's very true.

@@IrishMedievalHistory My Granny Kate - a Crosgrove- was also from Mayo, Phillip. She was from Geesla, in North Mayo, in the Barony of Erris, and apparently Synge lived there and based the 'Playboy of the Western World' on the village. My Gran died in the late seventies, but I remember her accent. She spoke Gaelic too. Lovely woman was Katie Cosgrove

Maith thú, iontach suimiúil. Very interesting and logical. In today's time, there's a resurgent interest in minimalist footwear/barefoot stuff because there's a recognition that it's good for your feet in certain situations. Agus, lá breithe sona duit.

As an older adult I prefer to go barefoot sometimes but I do like sandals outside but I do have indoor shoes I used to go barefoot in my old house until I stepped on lost cigarette that my dad dropped because he was in a car accident that he lost his grip in his left hand and he couldn't hold on to things.☹️ We were just thankful we didn't lose him or his riding buddy either.
