- The CEO of the designer furniture company MillerKnoll told her employees to focus on the company earning goals instead of their bonus in a leaked Zoom recording where she uses the term “pity city.” NBC’s Valerie Castro explains how that video is sparking a public relations disaster after the leaked video went viral.

she's only ashamed she has been exposed for how she truly is to her employees.
Of course.. she's there to make money... just like everyone else.
@@matthelm4666 it's not cool that she gets a bonus and they don't. How about dividing the bonus so everybody gets one. I'm sure she wouldn't like that because it would give everyone, including her, $354, instead of the 3.9 million that she got.
I go to work to make money, but that doesn't mean I have to be disrespectful to my coworkers, right? By your logic, everybody should go to work and curse at everyone else. I'm sure that would be a great place to work.
Remember, this isn't the military (and yes I did serve, USN submarine sonar tech, 1999 to 2003), people can quit at any time. One of the things she's supposed to be doing is trying to retrain her talented employees. It's a skilled labor place, so it's not like people are a dime a dozen.
Unfortunately this is the normal mindset for CEOs these days. She’s just the one who got exposed! These corporate leaders want to put 87 octane fuel in high performance cars, weighed down by overweight drivers (leadership) and then expect maximum performance. You get what you pay for! These people are unbelievable! Smh
Describing her remarks as "tone deaf" is an understatement.
Did she not expect that people would bring up the fact that she got her 3.9 million bonus.
In other words "Karen"Knoll said: "Spend your time and effort thinking about how to make me rich, and not thinking about what are you going to do if you can't pay your bills." 🤨
And that's the thing. The people she is talking to are executives. There's no way they didn't immediately start looking for another job. They must have been so instantaneously buthurt as that the exact mentality they have pressed on blue collar workers for years.
@@DRNT940 I agree with you. But.. forget about the word "Executives", that's just a title. When people decide to be an employee, they decide to be a blue-collar worker, and many times they accept whatever they receive. Don't think it's different in other places. The only difference is that another CEO may not be blatantly honest, almost reaching stupidity.. but make no mistake, they all look for the same. It just changes the way they talk to you about it. So what's the solution? Find another job where you feel more valued and fairly compensated.

Wow
We had a town hall meeting at our job and we have reach over quarter sales and the bosses never mentioned anything about our bonuses we deserve. This is sick what that lady is saying she is completely in a bubble that she believes is her reality.
The staggering $5 million annual salary of this corporate executive is indeed noteworthy, but perhaps equally concerning is the purportedly low emotional intelligence displayed by this woman. Unfortunately, this is a recurring issue within corporate America where a small group of high-level executives commandeer the lion's share of the compensation, leaving the remaining employees to divide up the scraps. In fact, recent estimates suggest that the compensation ratio between CEOs and workers in the United States has reached a staggering 398.8 to 1 in 2021. This trend effectively allows top executives to amass wealth at the expense of ordinary workers who are left to toil tirelessly for comparatively meager wages. This woman should be fired. She sponges on the sweat of workers.
Great non-apology: “I feel terrible that …” the world just learned that I’m an insensitive jerk.

At my job we keep asking our bosses for our raises since we gotten one last year and they keep avoiding us. Keep up the good fight!
I'm curious what special qualifications or expertise this CEO has that warrants a $5 million/year salary.
Wow, what a completely out of touch response.
It's what you would expect from a "Designer Furniture" company MillerKnoll, to be arrogant and snobbish to match their clientele base; "if they have no bread, let them eat cake". Let them eat cake (Qu'ils mangent de la brioche)".
A much better response would have been something like: "I regret we are not able to pay bonuses this year, believe me, I fought for it for you all (she should have if she didn't). If we concentrate on our profit over the year, we can work towards it for next year'. Instead she scolds people as if they are 10 year old kids for even asking.
Everyone is pearl clutching, but this is an office furniture company. People are remote working now. She has a very difficult job. It’s time for the employees to be understanding during difficult times.

Remember, folks: there is a much higher proportion of psychopaths in the C suite than in the general population.

Treat your employees well and pay them well and they will be working hard and not be thinking about pay/bonuses on work hours.
Quiet quitting time.
The way of the world. The ones at the top give themselves huge bonuses and tell the workers to work harder and don’t complain
Every employee should walk out on strike. Watch her spend her bonus trying to keep her business from dying.
How about we cut your bonus by 4mil? That'll take us 15% of the way to your 26 mil target.
Why don't we cut your pay? We could hire someone who works twice as as fast as you? Or we could improve the tools/supplies of the entire staff? How's that sound for you chief?
I work in the furniture industry. They're all use the same materials from the same vendor, you're just paying for the name. You're better off buying the "cheap" brand and save thousands.

I work at a company that’s part of Millernoll and all I can say is she should be ashamed of herself I’m not working their to meet their corporate demands or to achieve a quota to help line her pockets I work their to make a living and for her to say what she said makes me ashamed to even call her my CEO….. also at my work place they are making us keep our mouths shut as if this never happened…. good luck telling literally millions who have watched this that it never happened…. she knew she messed up because she immediately deleted it…. glad it got out 😂
I work at MillerKnoll, and they weren’t very far short of their desired goal, but they also definitely made enough to give out a bonus. We are all working very hard. I do way beyond what I’m supposed to every night, but now I will make sure I hit ONLY the rate that’s set for me. Have fun with that Andi, cause what I do makes a HUGE difference for you. I work in the department that gets the most orders, and I am constantly being relied on to make up for others that cannot hit rate. You’re about to see a big difference in my numbers. 😘

How about she give part of her 1 million dollar salary a year as bonus to her employees? That is chump change to her. I remember Conan O'brien gave part of his salary to keep employees from being laid off.

She's not a leader. I'm sure the board chewed her out and her response was to take it out on the people that count the most. She hasn't learned that to be successful your job is to make other people successful. It's worked for me. Want to know how to keep employees motivated, pay them well, respect them and their time.
Ironically, she's showing a perfect example of how to have a pity party. Perhaps everyone should get her email and invite her to their pity parties.

They are definitely going to miss sales targets now. 😑
Well, we know which company to avoid.
Honestly, given MSNBC's track record of defending CEOs I'm surprised they even covered this story.
The CEO apologizing by communique, not on video, is a disgrace to the company. Board of directors should remove her or give a relocation package to Pity City.
This is bog standard business school dogma. Your employees are lucky to have a job and your job is to make them feel that.
Employees should consider leaving Greedy City for a place you will be appreciated and not ridiculed.
Looking for another job .......
I like the bomb drop gesture at the end. It’s like her career was incinerated.
Free food for millionaires.
Should've just asked ChatGPT to write her speech instead. AI has more empathy than she will ever have.
As usual she gets hers and doesn't care about anyone else.
She knows that right now it's an employer's market. I'm sure she wouldn't be saying "leave pity city" back when it was an employee's market haha. She should not be getting bonuses if the rest of her employees are not. That's an easy way to demotivate your workforce. The more senior you are the more of your compensation comes from bonus vs an actual salary. That's the case everywhere. It's too bad she used the wrong tactics.
"This clip was taken out of context... she was actually much worse in the full clip"
She needs to immediately pay back her 3.9 million. After she does that the board needs to fire her.
