In this video, we cover what it would be like to import a model from Revit into Twinmotion that specifically has multiple materials applied. All of the import options come into play so be sure to be familiar with those and how they work.

Check out how to import models into Twinmotion. Here is the complete guide:

Thank you Very much for a great video. I was unable to apply desired materials. Now I am able to do it.

'Keep hierarchy' for small projects is maybe OK but there are pros and cons. For bigger projects I prefer 'collapse by material'. I got a landscape/city SketchUP file of 40 MB. When I import it into TM as a 'collapse by material' it becomes a 381 MB file and orbiting etc. this huge terrain with all the buildings is super fast. When I import the SU file as 'keep hierarchy' the file is 411 MB and the navigating in TM is sluggish and it takes forever to do saves etc. For small files such as a cabinet or maybe a simple house, yes 'collapse by material' not for huge files. Hope this helps.

I see what you are saying, to me it really depends on what you have to or want to do with the file. If you only need to add materials then collapsing my material might always be the best choice. I would always opt to keep hierarchy so my model is setup in Twinmotion the same way it was in the previous modeling program but besides that, I have control over each element individually which still being able to replace all the materials of the same name at one time. I have seen sluggish TM files before, so because I want to keep the hierarchy, I would look to upgrade the system in some way for better performance. Fortunately we do have the choice to change based on the model which I think is great!

Nice video. Is it possible to add material to one single surface of the object? For example the roof object, I only want to have tiles on the top surface but not on the other surfaces

Still no solution. I think they have great ambitious with TM in a short time, so they don't have time to deal with the users' feedback, especially the forum. It's not the same development logical with Blender. @@scent_of_life

Hey I'm having some trouble with this. I'm very new to the world of 3D so I apologise if this is a simple question for you. I'm working with SketchUp but I assume the 'families' in Revit are like groups in SketchUp, I want to add different materials to my model (a single object) using the TwinMotion rendering but I haven't been grouping my work. Is this a problem? Do I have to restart my project with groups? Or is there a way to have multiple materials without groups or families?

Families are sort of like groups in sketchup or blocks in auto cad, yes. I am not completely familiar with sketchup but no matter how you model, you can apply materials in twinmotion based what materials are applied in sketchup, so grouping wouldnt matter for material purposes. You would not have to restart, you can just make sure you have materials applied to objects correctly in sketchup.

Can you tell me where i can find these synchronization settings in sketchup datasmith exporter?

Is there a way to apply materials only on one surface of an object? I have an soil layer from revit and i want to use grass on the top and gravel on the sides.

You would have to go back into Revit and paint the top face of that a different material so Twinmotion could recognize it as a separate material. This would allow you to not have to make a second object or import the model a different way.

@@ArchitectureVanguard Thank you. I‘ll try to discuss this with my teammate, if he could do this. :)
