The pause was also to give him a little time to catch his breath, I mean think about it he's dancing like crazy! That's why during Human Nature he sounds a bit breathy like out of breath
He always sped certain songs while on tour, he did the with the Bad Tour, my guess is to give songs more energy, something like that lol

This live performance of this song was the one I've seen the most in my life and I love it, I have a very special affection for it, it's also one of my favorites, I never tire of watching it, your reactions to Michael are contagious, I love it. 👏🏻👑🤩🔥🕺🏻❤️
The consert mixes are almost always sped up. MJ always tried to press like a gazilion songs into every consert lineup and although many had to be removed from the final set, by speeding them up each consert would still include many more numbers than otherwie. Also, it was a way to preserve MJ's voice for long tours etc, by shortening each sung note by a little.
He has to switch notes much quicker tho if its faster and dance faster too. He made it way harder for himself. It still sounds great but he was out of breath. But he loves this song obviously and didnt care he was feeling it

I'm not an expert but I'm guessing the reasoning was that MJ's perfect pitch made quicker notes easier while longer notes tore more on the throat...especially while being out of breath, which just any 30+ person would be from dancing with that energy, even if moving to a less fast beat. But yeah, MJ wanted to share as many numbers with the fans as possible, can't get around that anyway.
I was at this tour in Wales back in the day. I was amazed. I miss MJ dearly and love his music which is eternal.

When this concert was happening there was a live broadcast on a radio station in my country (Switzerland). So all i had was cassette tape recordings of this live concert for months and months and months. Until the concert was finally shown on tv and then later was released on DVD. But for many many months all i had and i guess most fans had were this as an audio and the imagination of what he may do performance wise. Personally i had a ticket for Sept 11, 1992 Basel concert and he then cancelled it sadly bc he was not well. (He later in his strip search statement to which you already reacted to spoke about his pain medication dependency, it may have been the first signs of these type of problems which fans had no idea of yet). So personally i became a fan in 1987, had tickets for the first time in 1992 and was not able to see him live until 1997. I waited 10 years to see this man live. So this may put in context why ppl lost their minds, were crying and fainting when it finally happened. It was something you waited for for years and years. I remember the very first moment i ever saw him in clear detail.
In Germany the concert was broadcasted live like in other 60+ countries. A few days later was the repetition.
I even still have the vhs recording.
I saw Michael twice up close during the History Tour in Prague and in Leipzig, where I unfortunately passed out immediately after black or white.
@@sandy80_ger you know what? Yes you are right. I now remember why i only had a cassette. Bc my mom at that time all of a sudden had this "brilliant" idea that to have a tv is absorbing the family too much and their time. So it was decided that the tv must go. So i remember i had to beg my grandmom to come and watch the Oprah interview at her house and get up in the middle of the night. And she snuck up to my bed and woke me to watch it with me. But i had to be really quite bc my granddad would not allow that so it was our "little secret". So i did not get the same chance for Bucharest and had only a cassette for a long time. What i did was ask classmates to record stuff for me on VHS and then years later when i moved out i bought my own vhs recorder and a tv and was finally able to watch my tapes. I remember i saw the release of In the closet on tv before it was gone. And remember the time i saw at the house of a friend. Throughout Dangerous era i was restricted from a lot of stuff that happened.
It's insane! But it does make total sense when you put it like this! I would have definitely been one of the many who faints haha i get over excited for things in general. I wouldnt be very good at a live concert i dont think 😂

I love how he sings this song in this particular concert. I watch this one over and over again a lot! The pacing is good to me. 🤷♀️The background singers are better on this tour by a mile in my opinion.

I agree with you. I've never enjoyed the sped up version of wanna be starting something. I believe it loses something as well.
I measured various passages and the Dangerous Tour version of WBSS is marginally slower than the Bad Tour version. However, compared to the album version it is of course much faster, no question.

😂 It is a phrase from an African tribe that means: Let's dance! In the 70's it became popular with soul singers in USA and Michael used it very cleverly in this song because it makes you move😅
Well according to the group who sang the vocals on that part, in Thriller 40 they said they asked Michael what does that mean and Michael said "well it don't mean nothing, just sing it" 😂😂 I think it was just a random rhythmic catchy thing he needed to add to the bridge and give more energy so it's easy to sing, if it had another meaning, I don't thinl he knew.

I'm with ya, brother. The ridiculously fast tempo just about ruins the song. But I'm a bit of a purist in this regard. I much prefer when an artist performs their songs live as true to the original as possible. Back in the day, Depeche Mode made minor modifications to their songs when performed live, mostly with the arrangements, that enchanted the experience. But when they do major modifications, like the DEVOTIONAL TOUR version of "Everything Counts," I find it hard to enjoy.
