- The Home Affairs' Albert Matsaung says several arrests have been made, during a raid on restaurants in Menlyn. A number of foreign nationals were found to be working without the relevant documentation.

I completely understand that Babel's management has mistreated and exploited some workers, but calling for the shutdown of the restaurant is extreme. Babel alone employs 68 South African citizens, and the owner operates over 10 similar businesses across South Africa. Do you realize how many South Africans would lose their jobs if he chose to leave the country? I don’t think people fully grasp how influential he is in the industry. The same thing is happening at Ayepyep, yet it's owned by South Africans. In fact, many South African business owners are doing the same.

This is a very interesting dilemma and a real catch22 in the South African restaurant industry - It is a choice ? Salary or gratuities? - Most countries in Europe requires staff (waiters) to be paid an official minimum wage resulting in a culture of ‘non-tipping’ patrons. I’m all for a structured wage arrangement and not being expected to pay an gratuity (10% tip).
A significant number of restaurant workers are not documented (especially in CPT). As patrons we should request confirmation that we are served by waiters working with the necessary work permits.
I pray for the safety of the lady who exposed all this.

Firstly, there shouldn't be a minimum wage. The choice of salary should be negotiable as wages makes up most of the budget of small businesses which provides 80% of employment in South Africa other than government. Businesses are more concerned about keeping staff that ensure the success of the business, to think otherwise will lead to high staff turnover which is expensive due to having to employ and train new staff and ultimately lead to bankruptcy, so paying staff a liveable wage with benefits is more important than what employees assume.

It is this sterotyping perpetuated by employees that have created animosity towards the foreigners by locals and it's intentional and deliberate to destabilise relations between the two: divide and conquer.
When you hire don't you have criteria, prerequisites and qualities that you look for when doing interviews and selection process, you are not compelled to hire the first person who knocks at your door. You can hire people temporarily/as casuals, to evaluate them first to check if they meet your company policies and work ethics before giving them contracts to sign.

Mugg and Bean is also part of the problem ive visited the restaurant a couple of times and noticed its about 70% foriegn nationals employed they are contributing in tarnishing the local economy like many others. This problem has been going on for years it's silly of the department to act as if they are doing their job when they've ignored many many calls before while their staff is taking bribes from these restaurants. I hope they keep it up and also arrest some of their staff members
