    What it is, is, we refuse to look up to the pedestal you automatically put yourself on!

    I think the British are more aware of what is going on in American politics than a lot of Americans are.

  • @andrewbowman4611

    I think the main reason that we Brits are less than complimentary about Americans is the fact that the USA is a relatively young country with access to incredibly powerful technology. A toddler with a machine gun, if you will. It's certainly true that whenever matters of policy are brought up, especially around gun control, certain Americans, including those in high office, will throw tantrums that a five year old in a supermarket would be proud of. There's also a gracelessness to American culture which feels almost deliberate at times. Finally, the clumsy approach to the English language is somewhat grating, in that it lacks the poetry and sophistication of the British - dare I say authentic - equivalent. In short, it's a lot of minor things that just build to a greater annoyance than anything in particular.

      So then you are fully aware that Americans in some cases sound more like the British settlers than modern day Brits, right? The British colonists speech was rhotic. I'm aware there are a few pockets of Brits who still speak with a rhotic R and a few pockets of Americans who do not, but mostly American English is rhotic and British is not. Also, much of your comment smacks of jealousy, like it or not, particularly the first sentence

    • @andrewbowman4611
      @andrewbowman4611 Місяць тому +2

      @@cookielady7662 I'm not jealous in the slightest. Also, it's somewhat of a myth that British settlers in the Americas sounded remotely like Americans do now. It's certainly true that UK speakers no longer sound the same as we did 350 years ago, but we never spoke with an "American" accent, as general a term as that is. Both accents developed independently once the US was established. It is more substantial than rhotic and non-rhotic r's, lets be honest.

    • @cookielady7662
      @cookielady7662 Місяць тому

      @@andrewbowman4611 I could have gone on about the language but opted not to. It's not a myth about being rhotic or non-rhotic at all. That is what I was referring to. No reason for you to believe me though. Look it up.
      Maybe you aren't jealous, but it comes across that way to an awful lot of Americans when Brits start whining about us being a young country but we did/have/do/say XYZ. Why do you care and why do you insist on talking about it then? We hear it all the time.
      BTW, my ancestry is mostly English, something I was proud of at one time. Since discovering how many English people feel about Americans though, not so much anymore.

      @@cookielady7662 I didn't say it was a myth about rhotic and non-rhotic. I was talking about the idea that Americans speak 18th century British English, which they don't. Also, while I appreciate your frustration with my fellow countrymen, I'm not sure I appreciate being the target of that frustration. I wasn't trying to upset anyone, so it seems that odd that I seemingly have done.

    Why did we chose an American name for our city?
    What came first Medieval or Roman period?
    What part of England was first settled?
    But what they will never understand is our Association of Voluntary Guides. We provide completely free walking tours and don’t accept tips. We do this as a hobby and out of Civic Duty. But for Americans getting a service for free, without tips is Socialism and so evil!

      People from the USA have two equally annoying ways to say where they are from:
      - The most frequently used one is to say what US state they are from, assuming we should know the US states (while they would never know the states of the Federal Republic of Germany or any other country for example and I'd wager they dont know all the US states either). Start with the country for god's sake.
      - The other one is to say that they are Americans. There are 35 sovereign countries and several dependencies in the Americas. Again, start with the country, not the continent. US Americans are not the only Americans. They aren't even the majority.
      Call yourself US Americans, not just Americans, and show some respect to your fellow Americans and call yourself US Americans and not "from Texas, Illinois or California" and don't presuppose knowledge among non US Americans. No other country would ever do that.

But in my experience there are so many Americans who, perhaps because of deficiencies in the education system or in the society in which they live have no real concept of life outside the USA. At present for example I am looking at videos about the forthcoming election, and specifically about the antics of Trump and the MAGA movement. And it's terrifying. There is nothing comparable to this over here, and a lot of the power in the movement seems to be linked to poverty and lack of education, and the wish for the man with the magic wand who will at a stroke make their lives better. This I think is one of the biggest differences. Over here we have multiple political parties and politics is not as polarised.

      The European Union protects its citizens way better than the US, against the uses of toxins like, for example, chlorine by the profit-oriented food industries.
      I'm pretty sure this is exactly the point that this lady in the video was trying to make.

      I understand and agree with you and the point the lady in the video was making. I was simply pointing out that as someone from the UK, it is the Atlantic that is between us and the USA. I am from the east of England so have known the North Sea all my life. The Netherlands is our nearest continental neighbour and there has been a lot of Dutch influence in this region of England. There are many houses with Dutch roofs and it is quite common to see similar facial features in people whose families have lived in East Anglia for generations and those of Dutch people. The landscape is very similar to The Netherlands and Belgium, too, as is the climate. I feel that we have much more in common with our Continental neighbours and friends than we do with people from the USA, although I have met many lovely people from the USA.

      @@elainethemusician3310 Oh, okay. This video is about the UK's views on the US, I get it now😅 When I first saw your comment, I thought you had to be an American. Did you think the same about me? 🙈😂
      You're a North Sea person, just like me! Cousins and friends 😊
      It's good you mentioned Belgium. My father is Flemish, and he has even more English DNA than me: 64%!
      So I have some of the Belgian coast in me as well. Only the Scottish have been able to avoid becoming a part of me, somehow 😅
      To me, people from the UK are obviously European people. The only similarity I see between the UK and the US is that you are islanders, and the Americans act like islanders 😂
      Thanks for your response!

    I agree with what one person said in part one. Every country has problems, but a lot of Americans act like they're the best and the only thing that matters in the world. They think they own the world. Remember, I said a lot, not all. I have plenty of friends scattered all over the US, and I'm very aware that not all Americans think like that.
    One comment I have, some Americans, in my opinion, are some of the least patriotic population in the world, while claiming to be patriotic. The least patriotic thing you can do is accept your countries flaws and do nothing about it.
    I always say that Iceland is just as bad as the US, just in different ways. I don't know all that much about how things are in Spain. I've definitely come across scamming companies and such, and red tape, and complicated government stuff.
    But overall, my experiences in Spain for the last 7 years has mostly been a positive one. I'm aware of some issues Spain has, but overall, I think it's heaven and earth better than both Iceland and the US.

    The USA as a country is very very young compared to European, Asian and African countries and culture. American youth has of 2024 just had enough time pass to look back on their history and criticise or praise the history of their country. America has also gone through so many changes in a short space of a couple of hundred years which happened in other countries over hundreds of years.

    Of course it's all generalizations - but I think it's a kinda fundamental thing. Americans are pretty instinctive - they're not exactly known as deep thinkers when it comes to the serious stuff. Massive global issues that involve the wellbeing of millions are still treated like a football match. We're a bit more considered, before we start shouting some equivalent of "USA! USA! USA!"

    You might want to do a video on things invented in Britain, that might give you some perspective on why we Brits get a little irritated with Americans at times. You guys claim a lot of it & think you invented things you didn't. Just because something is widely sold & used in America doesn't make it an American invention. I know you guys focus a lot on your own country in your education, but the arrogance that instills is kinda problematic.

What most Europeans can't stand are the maga's. But they seldom travel abroad. We just learn about their inane view of the world from tv and UA-cam. Al Bundy did not exactly improve European impression of Americans. But if one look closer into it: Even Al Bundy (the artist who pictures Al) is anti Trump and Maga. The USA is great. Period. Hope i can go there sometimes.
