  • Six Flags Great Escape and Hurricane Harbor is an amusement and water park owned and operated by Six Flags. It is located approximately 60 miles (97 km) north of Albany, in Queensbury, New York. It was one of three Six Flags parks not to be officially branded with the "Six Flags" name until 2022, with La Ronde in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and Frontier City in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, being the last two without the Six Flags branding.
    History
The Great Escape was opened in 1954 as Storytown USA, a Mother Goose themed amusement park by businessman Charles Wood who bought the land with his wife for $75,000 In 1957, realizing that the park was geared only toward small children, the park opened its Ghost Town area, the first of many themed areas opened in the park's history.
In 1996, Charles Wood sold the park to Premier Parks who would later go on to purchase the Six Flags company. Unlike many parks during that time, Great Escape was not rebranded or flagged as a Six Flags park.

    It's a great family park!
Spent a wonderful day with my grandkids.
So many rides to go on.
Next year will be fantastic with the addition of Bobcat.

I really had a great time, it's nice that they kept a good portion of the original park. All of the mini houses and unique attractions made this a very fun place.

My most ever favorite of the Great Escape is Sasquatch Drop Side. I also go to New Jersey to especially ride on Kingda Ka.

The drop tower was fun, the Great Escape is a very unique park. They have some rides I've only seen there. Kingda ka is the best coaster at that park, the drop tower off the top is fantastic too.

The bobsled ride is going to be torn down for a family wooden coaster.

I worked there for years. Oh the stories!! All those restaurants, during the winter and until the next season, there is nobody there. So when they go in to open everything up, all those kitchens are full of squirel and chipmunk poop everywhere. The lifeguards in the water park go behind the scenes and go at it like rabbits every year. When you enter the park, there are appartments above the entrace. An exec who was rather large and is no longer alive, couldn't get out of the bed and crapped all over the bed, that was a great one. The international employees that work there call it the Great Mistake. They hire internationals to work there, then charge them for the lodgeing across the street from the park. They can barely save any money. Crazy times there!!!!

It's not surprising with all of the younger people working there. It must be a fun place to work, especially for someone who loves animals.

I miss the old great escape..ever since six flags took it over its gone down hill..all the good rides are gone and they aren't doing anything to bring in any good rides..unfortunately its a dying amusement park..my childhood memories have been destroyed..

The Great Escape is sort of it's own park in the Six Flags chain. They removed all DC and Looney Toons characters. It wss nice to see they brought back the fairy tale houses from the Storyland period. Which former rides do you miss the most?
