Great to see a lady on the footplate, my father was a fireman on the GWR, based at Stratford on Avon, where my love of steam comes from, good luck and best wishes
@@fayemoore4874 Hello Faye, it seems the girl working on Galatea was Joanne Crompton, who fires on the East Lancs Railway, plus shes passed for mainline duties. Best regards John
The crew seem to be doing a cracking job on the footplate. Always keen to see more women on the railways. 75078 is a fantastic engine, one of the only good standard designs, the others being the standard 4 tanks and standard 7s. Not keen on standard 2s, 6s or especially class 5s.

I wonder if that young lady is still working on the K & WVR doing the firing or has she progressed into actually driving the steam trains. Hope she has.
I've only once done a token exchange on the move (not something you do routinely as a guard). The driver of the DMU of course wasn't wholly aware of this, and came barrelling through. I stuck my arms out, and exchanged the tokens at such a speed, the token I received swung round and made a fair clang on the side of the DMU. I turned round and presented it to the driver with an expression of surprise and bemusement at the fact I'd actually caught the thing!

My father was a driver on the LMS for 47 years all through ww2. He told me the story that as a fireman before the war his driver sent him home to change his blue shirt for a white one with a black tie! Firemen were expected to be at work 1 hour before booking on time to clean the engine.
Petemonster62 Faye already said it well, but to add to what she said, the fire is usually around 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, or almost 1100 degrees Celsius. You’re also doing backbreaking work while firing too, so whether or not you’re wearing a tie makes little difference. You’re going to be sweating like a pig no matter what.
@@blackbirdgaming8147 On an express the engine would use about 1 ton of coal for every 50 mls. The amount varied with the engine and the skill of the driver!, who if half decent would help out!

I would NOT want to arm wrestle with this young lady!!!! And...she's doing a fabulous job!
Thank you 😊
It's lovely to see a woman interested enough in steam engineering to learn the shovel. I look forward to seeing her on the regulator one day.
Would this young lady be the same one who was on the footplate of Galatea on the S&C a short while ago ?

Doesn't the driver & firer get hot wearing ties in a steam locomotive cab?
No, already hot so doesn’t make a difference if you wear one or not. It’s not compulsory
