Great practical statement of purpose! I need to practice listening more than talking! One of my favorite songs by Babbie Mason says "God's people are an army, we're in a war against sin. But a house that is divided, is a house that can't win!" Talking about Unity in the church. I like that shirt and tie! 👍
Amen, Preacher.... May I learn to walk in such a way that those without will see Christ in every step, every deed ,every word spoken by me. Thank you brother, for the teaching of The Word of God....
I have been pondering these verses for a while, and praying that I use my tongue(glossa) to encourage others and praise the Lord. We have to give account for every word and secret thought, although if we believe in Jesus Christ, we can ask forgiveness of our sins, and he can choose to not remember them as far as the east is from the west. He sees us clothed in the righteousness of Jesus! Praise God! Lord forgive us also from our unrepented sins. Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in thy sight oh Lord my strength and my redeemer. Search me oh God and know my heart try me and know my thoughts and see if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. Help us to not be a stumbling block to the little children of the world. Help our only offense/accusation to be the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
Watched and enjoyed. Great class! I enjoyed the commentary on the word “text,” and it was a great studying minding our own business and keeping our eyes on the Lord. Amen, Bro. Mike.
Awesome study, Dr. Bagwell! Paul is giving them a reminder to do these things. "That"/ἵνα/hina. This is a "hina clause" or a statement of purpose. Paul says to work to pay bills and to have lack of nothing. Why would Paul write this to the Thessalonian church? These believers are top notch, they are not lukewarm or dead. No matter how good a church is, it can be better. No matter how good a Christian you are, you can be better. We can all improve and take a few steps forward in our Christian experience. The Lord's goal for His church is found in Ephesians 5 in that He present unto Himself a glorious church, not having spot nor wrinkle. The church should be sanctified and without blemish. In the Song of Solomon chapter 6 Solomon speaks of his bride being fair as the moon, clear as the sun and terrible as an army with banners. This is a type of the triumphant church. Verse 9-10 dealt with things inside the church, particularly brotherly love. In verse 11-12, we deal with relationships outside of the church. Don't be a busybody or a freeloader. How can brotherly love inside the church lead to good actions outside the church? What we have inside the church, we need to take outside the church. We should tell others about the love of God. Why is Paul choosing now to discuss studying to be quiet and working with their own hands? Because Paul has sent Timothy to see how the church is doing. Timothy comes back (1 Thess. 3:6-8) and tells Paul good things about them. Nothing negative is mentioned. However, it could be that when Paul and Timothy got alone that Timothy told him of some minor problems among the Thessalonians. Paul decided to write a letter to them. That could be what triggered Paul's response here. See Phil. 4:8. We are to think on all these things especially a "good report". Timothy probably wanted to get alone with Paul before he broadcasted bad news. We should give good reports of the things of God. We have learned we need to live a holy life. We also learned we need to live a harmonious life. Now we learn to live an honest life. "Quiet" means "to hold one's peace, to be at rest, at ease". We should let our tongues be at rest. A little less loose tongued harming the body of Christ. "Study"/φιλοτιμέομαι/philotimeomai/love of honor. It is honorable to learn not to criticize and slander. "Do"/πράσσω/prassō/to practice. "Business"/ἴδιος/idios/your own affairs. See 1 Peter 4:15. We are not to be busybodies in other men's matters. See 2 Thess. 3:11. Paul said there are some that walk disorderly and are busybodies. Paul worked with his own hands. He was a tentmaker by trade. See Acts 18:3. He worked with Aquilla and Priscilla. Jesus also worked with His hands (Mark 6:3). He worked in Joseph's carpenter shop. Christians should have a good work ethic. "Work"/ἐργάζομαι/ergazomai/exerting physical labor. Why the emphasis with the working of their own hands at Thessalonica? It might be that Paul has preached so much about the 2nd coming of Jesus and the rapture of the church, maybe some of them thought that because the Lord was coming that they didn't need to worry with working. Jesus said to "occupy 'til I come". Don't be lazy and do nothing. Continue to pay your bills and provide for your family. "Walk"/περιπατέω/peripateō. "Honestly"/εὐσχημόνως/euschēmonōs. Live the kind of life that there will be a good outward image. This will cause the lost not to be saved when we don't walk honestly. "Lack" means "need of nothing". If you don't work, you are going to need some things. We should have a good witness and reputation out in the world. We should live a life where people will think well of your Saviour. See 1 Tim. 5:8. We need to work and provide for our families. If someone truly cannot work, the church should help them. If they are able and won't work, they should not eat. We should adorn or put on the doctrine of God. God hates those that sow discord among the brethren. God loves peacemakers. "Text" means "woven". A text is a series of words, sentences etc. that the Holy Ghost has woven into a meaning. Every cloth has threads that go vertically and also has a series of threads that go horizontally. There are threads that point towards God and others that point crossways to our brethren. This was a phenomenal study! Thank you so much for these studies!
