With all the VIDEO CAMERAS in the world today, there is a good chance someone will be filming the next time you step on a Montana Rattlesnake.
To avoid embarrassment, always remember to do the “Snake Shake” when a Rattler latches on to your pant leg.
The “Snake Shake” dance steps are easy. Remember to keep your left arm high in the sky, like a bronc rider, as you vigorously shake you right leg until the snake lets go. Holding a hat in your left hand is optional but it does add “style” points.
We were told there are regional variations to the “Snake Shake.” In Texas, the Rattlesnakes are so big that folks use BOTH hands to elevate their leg. Finally, remember to wear baggy pants before doing the “Snake Shake.” If you wear shorts, all you get, is lots of screaming and yelling followed by an abrupt ride to the Hospital for medical attention.
No one knows the origins of the “Snake Shake” in Montana. My Dad said he was doing the “Snake Shake” way back in 1947, while fishing the Big Hole River near Divide.
