A cousin of mine who is an artist made a body cast of herself and then took it to a candy factory, where they cast her in hard rock candy! It was amazing.

Heh, it's.. an experience! I was a photographer, did some makeup courses and ended up dating a stage makeup and prosthetic artist. They persuaded me to get a lifecast of my head. Was great for making prosthetics, but not exactly a comfortable experience. I've been wondering if it'd be safe or possible to vacform body parts, but I guess it would be rather unsafe to try that on a head.
@@brolohalflemming7042Vacuforming involves heating the plastic so it will conform to the shapes. Skin and melted plastics are not a good combination,....
Now, vacuforming around the life casts, to make lightweight sections for a cosplay armor, that can be effective.
@@PiDsPagePrototypes Yes, indeed. This was something I'd been having fun with using my casts. But this was a couple of decades ago, and vacuforming has moved on, so if there were lower temperature polymers that might be safer. But if I had the money, what I'd really want is a scan, then mill-a-me out of stainless steel. Fit joints and a poseable me! Not exactly portable, but durable.
I vote for another bullet resistent dress, maybe a full ballgown this time. Or pretty much anything masking as another thing, especially something you can wear. Like hidden pockets or a full one tool belt hidden under a big skirt.

Make a couple new wax casts from the mold and chop it up and lost-wax cast them in brass and use those to make a Xyla-Foam-Xylaphone
Actually this is the beginning of a totally new class of life : Xylaforms.
As a fellow makeup professional who has taken life casts many times, I was quite worried when I saw the title, as people have seriously damaged themselves by using raw plaster against their skin. (Do NOT do that!! Plaster heats as it cures, and can burn your skin! It can also encapsulate hair and fine tissue, causing extreme pain if not permanent damage. Do NOT use raw plaster directly against your skin!!)
So I was quite relieved when I saw you in the hands of such capable professionals as Jason and Mel. Technically speaking, you don't have to be completely naked to do a life cast; you could have worn a sports bra and shorts, to go the silicone mold route; it's not an all-or-nothing proposition. But this technique seems to have worked out fine, for your purposes. It was actually interesting to see the silicone go INSIDE the plaster mold- essentially as a mold release. Interesting, for sure- makes me think about alternate ways of doing things.
Some more sanding to refine the shape and take out the extra bumps, and then sealing with a top coat: that would be WELL worth the extra time and effort. You're not going to want to put fabrics and such up against that raw foam; it'll snag all to heck. But this is a great start!! It's so fun to have a clone of yourself, isn't it? 😄😄
I'm so glad someone mentioned this cause in high school my class did plaster mask and to protect from burns we put Petroleum Jelly on our faces the partner I was assigned didn't put enough on my eyebrows so when the mask came off so did like 6 eyebrow hairs from each eyebrow which really hurt so yahhhhhh.
I'm also rather glad you mentioned wearing something like a sports bra and shorts underneath cause I was thinking the exact same like "why wouldn't she just wear a bikini or a tight tube top and boy shorts" strange that she didn't think of that since she wears sports bras and shorts as ever day clothes like all the time and she was literally a beauty pageant winner so she's worn a bikini in front of hundreds before and thousands if you count everyone who has seen it and her bikini pics on Instagram so weird her mind went straight to leggings and a rather loose shirt...

I recently discovered Jill Bearup and having descended in to her rabbit hole I am going to have to say that what we need to see now with Xylafoam is armour. Proper medieval armour.
She's not a blacksmith but could you imagine a full suit of armor but made out of carbon fiber and kevlar? That would be sweet

when i was doing theater prop stuff, the way we made full body "casts" was with chicken wire! we'd make a stand (essentially a basic armor stand shape) and then we'd wrap the lady being cast in chicken wire. from what i remember, she did the wrapping herself for modesty reasons, because it required a LOT of fine tweaking of the metal wires that make up the mesh. i believe we had the seam actually run down the side of the model being cast instead of the back because she had to do a lot of fitting around her bust by herself. when she was done shaping the chicken wire to her body, she just gently opened it like a book, slid out, and the mesh sprung back shut. after a bit more fine tuning, we put the mesh on the stand so it stood at the right height. then it was just a matter of picking a skin. we went with a thick latex that was spread on the chicken wire with newspaper directly on the wire to cover the gaps. the latex allowed for some minor articulation. it worked incredibly well in the end, and that dang cast scared the crap out of people for years after lol. once it was fully clothed with a long dress and a bonnet, it really just looked like a lady standing still.

my hunch would be no, because if I'm mistaken, plaster curing is an exothermic reaction - it actually generates some heat.

The plastic wrap and duct tape method is great for flexible costumes, but anything rigid is an issue.
it‘s really amazing to me how some people find a job they can do for a long time and become real experts.
An air dancer inflatable tube Xyla would be fun.

Another corset would be fantastic! it would be interesting to see you put to use what you learned from the wooden and bullet proof corsets. Bonus points if you choose another new material as the base :P
Heh, a buddy of mine made a plaster cast of his torso. He went oldschool (being as it was both at school and over 20 years ago now - ack, I can feel myself decaying) with Vaseline for mold release - which worked pretty well! But not perfectly . . . being students and artists and after hours in studio (to avoid impromptu pinup/runway shows) it was a bit hurried with the mold release application. And he's got a middling degree of body hair - which on application of plaster . . . promptly locked him into his own plaster cocoon.
The key to freedom? Pain. And levers. Mostly pain (of pulling out many - so many - hairs).
It was truly a lesson in how not hurrying a project will result in the best outcome (i.e. not being trapped in a plaster jacket resulting in inadvertent torso depilation and contemplative denial of food, nicotine and various other bodily needs =D )
As a relative of sasquatch myself... I can *_only imagine_* the suffering he endured... 🥺😬

I was also a college student more than 20 years ago, and there were techniques and materials at that time that could have saved him all that pain. But of course one has to know where to look, to get the proper tools and materials for any job- from body casting to boat repair to quilt making: the right tool for the right job. As impetuous art students, it's easy to get caught up in an idea; I remember how it was. I used the wrong kind of glue once for a makeup project, because I was impatient. It was not skin-safe glue! Could have been worse, but should have gotten the right stuff to be safer!
Your friend is darn lucky that some hair-pulling pain is all he had to endure. Curing plaster can heat up, and has been known to burn people! Be careful, folks!!
For future reference, for anyone curious:
The technique in this video: plaster bandage over clothing- can be safe. Very low-risk. Not quite as accurate, but for purposes like this, works quite well.
Alginate is a plant-based rubbery material that is safe against the skin, plus a plaster bandage mother mold for rigidity. Its main drawback is it can be used only once, before it dries out. Relatively gentle on fine hairs; more difficult with coarser hair, but a good coat of release such as vaseline works well. Rather tricky for doing a full torso or whole body, but has been done successfully many times; was the main go-to for decades. It's the material I used for casts in the 1990s/early 2000s.
Silicone is the most common material now for body casting. Skin-safe, captures details super well. The mold can be re-used many times. Slightly expensive, but not extravagantly so. Can be sealed against body hair, so- much less painful! (though shaved skin is still safest)
Do NOT encase your body in raw plaster against the skin! Even with vaseline as a release, it can be VERY dangerous for many reasons! You may get away with an embarrassing story about hair-pulling, or you may end up with life-long scars and burns. Do NOT use plaster on your skin! There are alternatives!

Use it to design protective shop clothes, dress it up as a shop prop with ski wear, wetsuit, rocketing attire? Whatever gear you might wear in the 'outdoor' portion of a video, to show it off during the 'shop' segment.

If you wanted to seal it, since you know it's size, get a body suit of lycra or similar and have as the clone's permanent skin. You could just cut the arms off and attach it to the clone arms. Also, cosplay a favourite suit of armour would be fun to pattern then print based off this. :)

I saw this product a while back that does a 3d scan of the individual and creates/adjusts a virtual pattern for clothing making. I don't know how well it actually worked, but it is a thing!

What a crazy cool project! I can’t imagine having an exact mannequin replica of myself, must be a bit unnerving. I’d like to see a full-body colour changing jumpsuit, but that wouldn’t really require the mannequin for moulding so much. You could try to make a fibreglass suit that’s covered in ultra right LED panels so that your whole body glows super bright and you can be a human lantern.

I was talking with a friend the other day about the possibility of using an iPhone and its IR/LIDAR to scan someone's body so then you could upload it so you could basically have an accurate "avatar" for trying on clothes virtually. I wonder if you could scan your body just standing there and then using CNC to cut the blank out of foam?
Yep, there's several 3d print channels that have gotten full size statues of themselves made. Better quality prints start with a better quality model so using a good scanner (not an iPhone) would be a better choice.
For sure would work. You don't even need any fancy lidar. Photogrammetry works by taking a bunch of regular pictures from all angles and then some cool software makes a 3D point cloud that you can process and turn into a 3D model. As long as you get the scale right then it would work great.
Naoimi Wu did something similar. I think she had the mannequin made from laser cut cardboard.
That would be the "easy" way...

Whatever you make, you should probably use composites. It's your specialty after all :).
That said, some ideas might be a wooden dress (as a throwback to the wooden corset), or maybe a hard shell pressure suit.

Definetly seal the opened foam. Will help ton in long run and make useing it easier! (Like how much/easilly it will collect dust or stains - and pass it forward to your workpieces)

Does the foam not need a more firm sealer over it, like resin? Is it never going to flake, or if bumped or hit, get pot parks or chunks come off it?

Fun and amazing to watch
6:15 there IS a (small) chance, when doing the mini-pour method, that a later pour can find voids or gaps in prior pours that, if rigid, COULD cause your mold to crack. this is a SMALL possibility, and can be pretty easily avoided by making sure to pour evenly, right down the middle, so that you don't get wall-growths that could overhang to make the aforementioned voids.
I built a poly-foam filled boat with my dad as a kid, and we broke the first one this way, trying to pour into a too-small opening in the fiberglass shell.
I would kinda liken it to cracking rocks by wedging pieces of dry wood into a crevice, then pouring hot water on them so they expand to pop big pieces of stone apart.(the way they cut the cave-dwellings outside of the holy lands and in parts of Syria)
I had my body plastered when I was in arts school and it was amazing it was like having an outfit that I only needed to correct my posture once to something other than a goblins and than when it was dried I could relax with full support also the Vaseline made my skin sooooo soft.
Neat! Now i wonder if you'll be revisiting the CF dress, now that you can make it properly fitted. The original looked stunning. I can imagine that a second version if it would be even more beautiful. Especially since you already have experience to work with the second time around
Also.. Your teal t-shirt is a perfect reversal pun of the old saying.. "MEASURE ONCE CUT TWIC" (cuts off as the E in twice doesn't fit) It's like that sign on some college of design The sign doesn't fit the wall and the end of it had to be put on the adjoining wall.

Which hardness of film did you use in? Can you stick pins in for laying out Fabric patterns?
Instead of sealing it with a resin or some other chemical sealer, consider a lycra/flexible fabric form pinned to the form.
Most definitely a Xyla rocket! Not sure which would be the better flight: the foam or the cast.
