  • Did you know that LOOFAH is a gourd? I didn't until a few years ago when someone gave me a few seeds. Those few seeds grew plants along my entire fence line and gave me more seeds and LOTS of sponges. This video documents the journey of two of those seeds into an astounding arbor cover.
February 4, two half-inch seeds that were placed in grow trays. After 2 weeks, the seedlings were moved to DWC tanks with aeration. They continue to grow for 4 more weeks in indoor Kratky hydroponics until there was no threat of frost.
On March 13 a couple of hydroponically grown loofah plants were transferred to a pot that had plant-starting soil. Did pretty well in the spring, but the intense summer heat really slowed their growth.
Early September they began to grow rapidly due to the cooler weather. The two seeds grew into two plants that completely cover a large arbor. They aren't just a pretty arbor cover, but the gourds can be eaten when small and then let dry on the vine for more seeds and for AMAZING sponges!
Be sure and save the seeds for next season and remember, if you start your loofahs in an indoor hydroponic system and give them a little TLC and patience, your loofahs will thrive and grow in the perfect environment. In just 8 months, they'll be ready to take on the world.

I have been fascinated by loofah since I was given my first bag of seeds! They are incredibly gratifying to grow & the sponges are SERIOUSLY the best I’ve ever used! Thank you for watching & for always being #happy about #hydroponics!!!
