If anyone is interested, here's a public link to a downloadable file (24/192 Apple Lossless) of the Charlie Byrd track I mentioned. No processing, no pop/click removal. The album is 50 years old and it's been played a couple of hundred times, so I'm sure it's missing some highs relative to a new copy. Each side has over 26 minutes of music, so it was cut at a modest level -- not ideal for surface noise. I cleaned it with a Nitty Gritty record cleaner -- original model, about 35 years old but still working. Played on a Well Tempered deck, over 30 years old. The cartridge is not quite 3 years old. For those who think LPs sound like sh*t, give it a listen at a realistic level, as if you were sitting at a good table in the jazz club it was recorded at. www.dropbox.com/s/b5trpssutv931qw/Medley%20-%20Mood%20Indigo%20-%20Satin%20Doll%20Lino%20C.m4a?dl=0

Wonderfully charming presentation. Mark’s dry sense of humour and matter of fact delivery is wonderfully eclectic. But getting to the meat of his presentation it’s an insightful and clear illustration of some of the esoteric issues surrounding phono preamps and MC cartridges. Hum and noise can be a real pain in the neck to deal with and this is a great advert for the Lino. Nice job!

I might try one of these. I never knew that Cartridge/TT phono outs were BALANCED until I saw a review of the Ayre Acoustics phono pre! This is a great video, and mark IS a natural speaker! I still want to know what the Signal to Noise ratio is on that unit. The company does not say what that is. Before audiophiles beat me up for taking about specs, your ears tell you how it sounds, specs tell you what it does. When you switch to MC you give up 20+ DB in S/N ratio, which you can not get back. If you are listening to an album like Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel, at a higher volume, that becomes a problem. I use a Threshold Fet-10e phono pre. So far that is the quietest phono pre that I have used and it sounds spectacular.

    • @StewartMarkley
      @StewartMarkley 4 роки тому

Davethreshold I am also curious about the S/N ratio. The low impedance/differential design minimizes noise, but I wouldn’t expect it to be that much lower than other MC preamps. But I might be wrong.

Great video! Great image quality too. Very interesting that you are doing your RIAA in digital domain and then recording them. I must say though that although it may sound great, it introduces a level of fiddling around I couldn't handle. One thing, you didn't talk about using the internal RIAA of the Lino phonostage which will likely be the way that most would use it but perhaps your system isn't set up for that.

    Nice! Thank you for this.
I thought the Lucky Strike cap was crafted pre-cancer humor ... until of course the tasty run through of the 2000's F1 selection!
As a skin cancer survivor, F1 fan/audio enthusiast... this entire submission checked box after box for me.
The all to brief perusal thru the LP collection also checked several like minded boxes...ie., Dire Straits Making Movies, is a full length listen for me every time. Rough Mix, Nightfly is likely my desert island record (on the heels of Ry Cooder perhaps 2nd major release in 3M digital ...no less than 45ips! eeeks!)
Best of all; more than the skin (pre)cancer kinship, F1, Pete Townshend*, etc, I truly appreciate the fully realized, correctly symmetrical, SBIR mitigating away from boundaries speaker placement. You don't have cabinets or small items interrupting the wave-launch in the form of Very Early Reflections ... outstanding setup. I'm guessing it images well, resolves soundstage depth nicely and prolly just a pleasure to listen to. I dig the visual aesthetic w/infusion of southern exposure natural light.
    Thank you, good one.
Consider content for your own channel. I'm down.
*(ever listen to the Secret Policeman's Ball? Pete Townshend at his finest. I don't have the record, my college roomie did in '82, we kept it on regular rotation)

First, Mark you did a great job. With that said,
Did anyone catch the $1150.00 cartridge? Man, some people are just nuts for a inferior recording format. I mean like Mark's dad's album. It's got to be 50 years old and had more needles touch it then a NYC junky. I wonder if he had a brand new vintage would it sound the same? Bet not.
All this is just a high tech way of what we used to do by hitting record on the tape deck and jacking up the gains and running your turntable through it.
Also you will need 4 things, the last that was skipped is the combination to the safe and alarm codes to your local bank.

4:40 Yes! It is very important, I've managed to make a cheap AT95E sound very nice by setting low load capacitance, better than normally a 2M Blue (7x the price) sounds!
But when using a MM cartridge, you need to keep in mind: your phono cables have some capacitance too, so you need to set the load lower than factory recommended.

"Now, That's Entertainment!" Really enjoyed it. I learned a helluva lot.
Also got a thrill out of the Sauber-Petronas cap. I moved from the Deep South to Upstate New York in the mid 1960s to attend high school, about an hour away from Watkins Glen...and fell in love with with F1 and endurance racing.
Not to stir up a hornet's nest, but I'd like to know where you stand in the great digital vs vinyl debate. Have you written on it? And where could I find it?
    All the best.

I laugh when I hear someone say they "hate equalizers and equalization". Then I bring up the RIAA EQ which was used to master vinyl records, AND the RIAA EQ which is required to play vinyl records.
