    Love this.
    I recently converted a '98 Kona Kilauea to a drop bar adventure bike. Actually, did a '99 Hahanna at the same time for my son. I did use v brakes with road shifters with the clever Problem Solver Travel Agent adapter, addresses the different cable pull ratios. Found some disc mount Project 2 forks and run Avid BB7 Road discs on the front.
    Oh, and resprayed the bikes myself using the wonderful spraybike powder coat product
    Very pleased with builds.

    For the handlebar tape: Just use a cheap 2mm strong one as a base layer and wrap a second layer of SRAM Supercork arround it. That will give you a nice cussion for bumpy rides and is easy to clean.

    First time I've ever heard of self-energizing cantis. Now I feel like I gotta get me some of those. Anyway, a detailed 50+ min. build video would be great! I'm genuinely courious how you're gonna fit a shadow tech derailleur on a traditional hanger...

      @@matthewlewis2072 Really? I'm relatively sure that Shadow tech requires a differently shaped (direct mount) hanger. Like this: forums.mtbr.com/attachments/canyon/1161455d1507496837-four-broken-derailleur-hangers-my-spectral-year-wtf-img_20171008_161150310.jpg

    The SunTour cantis can sometimes (depending on the frame) feel a bit underwhelming and this is a result of the brakes forcing some seat stay flex in the area of the brake boss. A booster is probably a good idea.
    Would prefer a 50min full build video for Part 3.

    • @prestachuck2867
      @prestachuck2867 5 років тому +1

      Retro Mod Agreed. I think @joncannings would greatly benefit from installing brake boosters front and rear. They would not only improve braking performance, but they can prevent catastrophic frame or fork failure. #gcntech

    Maybe it is worth mentioning that this 11-34 11speed cassette is compatible with 10speed freehubs (hence your need for a washer/spacer) - if I'm not mistaken. Might come in handy for some people who want to fir an 11 speed cassette on an older rear wheel.

    • @renemunoz8380
      @renemunoz8380 5 років тому

      wasn't that a shimano LX 7speed rear hub?

  • @jamesowen418
    @jamesowen418 5 років тому +2

    My 2 cents: 10-speed Tiagra shifters won't work with any old rear mech, 9-speed road shifters will work with any 8/9 speed rear mech be it road or mtb (probably want a long cage mtb for a 1x drivetrain).
    I'd go bigger than 11-34t cassette if you're using a 38T chainring, plenty of cheap 11-40 or 11-42 cassettes out there (even 8 or 9 speed) to get you up those hills.
    Fit a longer B-tension screw or use one of those mech extenders on eBay to drop the mounting position down to handle the bigger cassette.
    If using drop bars on a mtb (which has a relatively long top tube compared to a riad bike) then you may want a shorter but higher rise stem, or you end up too low and stretched out.
    Looking forward to the build, and kudos for sticking with the cantilever brakes! 👍🏻
