      Well, I totally get you BUT
      There is this fun strategy in business that is often times described as 'never change a running system'
      The Paul's did their video about the suicide forest
      Now youtube heavily checks what is getting popular
      Because saying a few edgy words is not an issue, but the kind of message they send or the context can be.
      Hear me out
      You are a big-ish store in your area and think about doing youthbe ads
      Well you also suddenly realize... huh my god, what if people see my ad in a video talking about how great the columbine shooter was
      That isn't a connection anyone wants to have with their brand or store
      I think it is absurd
      Wrong even what is being done to communication and serious topics
      But weirdly enough this is terrible but also better then anything I guessed would happen
      You can still be edgy and get adds
      Just avoid certain words
      Descriptions are still fine
      Euphemism are fine aswell
      I do not have hope for younger children
      But anyone above like 18 is VERY much aware of what things are
      And censorship really isn't new
      It's terrible
      But nothing new

      And depending on the circles you travel in, you _still_ get demonetized!
      I've found that it's largely a case of not wanting to give the censors any excuse. There's differential enforcement on content regulation. We all know it. You'd have to be _high_ to not realize what's going on. The point of the self-censorship is so that you can go "hey, this one of mine got hit, too. But I didn't even use any f-words in this one. What's up with that?" With luck, it opens people's eyes to the brazen madness. There is no saving the system, but perhaps some of the people can be reached.
      The particularly purposeful will even invoke the memey way of dancing around certain words to make a point. That's how "Canadian healthcare" became a meme. If it sounds twisted and inhuman... that's the point. Censorship is dehumanizing, and you _will_ listen to it, and you will _keep_ listening to it until the end of our days on this unlife ball because some people are rightfully afraid that you'll forget. We want you to remember that cringe of hearing "unalive" or references to "the forever box." Some people want that to be the future, and they will try to convince you that _that_ way is better.
      It's not just demonetization, either. Some channels even get outright strikes and their stuff gets removed, even if they're following fair use to the letter, just because they happened to be critical of something that The Powers That Be have a lot of money invested in.

      I personally agree with your statement, there’s a couple of UA-camrs that cover cold cases, and heavy topics yet they say graped, and unalived and it always takes me out. It makes me feel like they don’t even take the topic seriously. It’s understandable for new upcoming UA-cam channels to do this especially if they NEED the revenue, and the views. But if your like this person with millions or hundreds of thousands of subs then take it on the chin. It especially doesn’t make sense when they also have a brand of their own that’s doing more than fine. But yes I think it’s really a strange decision to do and it’s just unnecessary.

    But shit like “graped” and “unalived” piss me off. Its so unserious and brainrotten.
    But letting big corpos dictate our speech with double standards is pathetic.
    What topics we can discuss should be decided socially, not by the distant overlords who kowtow to shitty, oversexualized and misleading advertisers but will shoot down anything remotely “explicit”

    Orwell noted that one of the best ways to control people was to limit their speech, and the prime example was the removal of negative words - so nothing is "bad", it's just "ungood" (which by it's makeup of two negative/positive words means it's meaning is subconsciously more neutral than bad). By removing the impact of proper negative language you neuter the conversation before it begins.

    Censorship is evil. Period. Self-censorship is the worst kind of censorship there is. Back when the religious right (thought) they had control of culture, they demanded that everybody censor themselves. Everybody rightfully told them to screw themselves. Now, when the current language police do it, everybody seems so quick to happily comply. It makes me sick to my stomach.

    I'm so glad someone else is talking about this. The weird censorship of more serious topics to appease algorithms and keep videos from being demonetized or flagged has always kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I get that people want to make money off of the content they make and I fully believe they should be allowed to but these are topics that should be handled seriously and using flowery euphemisms to avoid directly mentioning them lessens the seriousness of those topics. I've seen people use terms like "unalive" "self termination" "self deletion" and "slide into the sewer" when referring to suicide and it almost feels disrespectful.
    I don't think the issue rest solely on content creators though, the fact that sites like UA-cam and TikTok incentivize doing this by punishing creators who don't is honestly even worse. Not being able to talk openly about these types of serious topics without risk of having your video demonetized, flagged, or even taken down is insanely counterproductive. These are things that should be talked about and should be talked about very openly and transparently.
    I don't understand why companies like UA-cam and TikTok feel the need to forcibly make it harder to talk about these kinds of serious issues to appear more advertiser friendly when most of the time, these videos are just recounting events that happened in real life. This gross forced PG-ification of the internet is truly only going to result in negative consequences imo.

      I'm not sure about that with the responsibility. Like Chris said, the amount of cash made despite the dings from mentioning these words is supplementary at best. Your channel will not tank nor will it suddenly succeed depending on your use of the terminology. All it does is enhance an already existing output. As a result, I have to face the obvious: As a true crime fan, I acknowledge that 90% of people who claim to be content creators for the genre are essentially just parasites unwilling to risk talking about the seriousness of the topic. The involvement with things like true crime comes from remembrance. When you start scrubbing away remembrance because you want, again, WANT an extra $150 at the end of the month does have to make you a bit scum, no matter who's offering you the cursed chalice.
      Scold and torch corpos all you like and I'll honestly support you, but to pretend that somehow people are relieved of responsibility because 'oooo money'? I'm sorry, but is the artistic form in general so godfuck corroded thanks to money? Ultimately, we both agree. I just really hate the idea that people are exonerated of all blame simply because they were paid. The logical conclusion to that would simply make being a hitman legal. After all, there's the monetary incentive.
      When it comes to the hardtack, you don't NEED to talk about this on UA-cam or TikTok. If the focus is simply the money, then I have to refer to above. Talking about dead people should not be completely dependent on money, I'm sorry lmao

It's visceral and gets across the point very efficiently. Then "pedophile" became the commonly used term. While it is accurate, it also isn't as raw and brutal, which is why people (and I use that word in a purely biological sense) have started identifying themselves as pedophiles and trying to even further sanitize the language with the term "minor attracted person." I feel like the valid frustration might be misplaced. Like yeah, it can be weird to hear very serious topics be spoken about with some stranger euphemisms, but at the end of the day creators aren’t the ones dictating the rules. Like if I’m a small creator trying to grow, I’m not going to throw a wrench at myself by blatantly disregarding what yields success from the algorithm determining whether or not I grow - especially if it’s something you’re trying to do full-time. Definitely once you’ve “made it” I think you can afford to have more flexibility, but if you’re in a position where you don’t have patrons, you don’t have sponsorships, and your main goal is getting an audience, you’re only making an already steep climb all the steeper by not playing the game at least a little. The issue should be raised with companies like UA-cam, TikTok, etc. who are making the rules in the first place rather than the creators who are punished for not following them.

    I love that when father finally came back he decided to talk about an issue that's been personally bothering me for a long time now
    Personally I hope if anything unfortunate happens to me I hope it goes unrecorded and unnoticed
    I'd rather suffer in silence then line some douches pockets while using child playground words to describe what happened to me

    The thing I don't get is the people doing it think somehow the platform and algorithm won't figure out the new words? All it takes is one guy to open up a command prompt and add SA and PDFfile to the list, then bam you'll still get dinged.

      And then we need to make up new lingo, and then that gets censored, and we have to ban together to find new lingo until that also gets censored.
      Or... and I know this is 'bannanas' - the other word is banned, but hear me out, we can just collectively agree that "censorship of harmless words is wrong."

      You'd also think that maybe, just maybe that "in the land of the free and home of the brave," we wouldn't allow corporations to police harmless speech?

      @VariantAEC you seem passionate about this which is something I live to see
      If you want to see an extreme version of that go and look into the current issues of hongkong. The language of resistant people has genuinley evolved to a point where it's apperently incomprehensible for uninitiated people because they pack so much meaning into harmless everyday phrases to the point where a poster surfaced that tells you how to get an umbrella if it rains that contains a guide on how to check if someone is an undercover cop with literally no phrases that seem even slightly odd on a description on where to get umbrellas

    • @mandragorius9637
      @mandragorius9637 3 дні тому

      The thing is
      Noone cares about wether we all know what it means
      The point is to make it sound more marketable, because the real words bring up to many bad emotions
      Noone wants to buy hello fresh when they are sad about a 12 year old boy being raped to death by his uncle
      But a lot of people don't mind doing that after learning about a child going into a forever sleep after a minor attracted family member suprise loved them to much.
      Of course it also has a fun side effect of polishing any agenda you like by making it so that only the group you disagree with is being targeted with the evil words
      But the group you like, even when they commit heinous acts gets the happy fun time words that make the brutality of their crimes seems so cute and silly

    "Unalive" in particular is disgusting and dystopian as hell. It takes a serious, heavy topic like death and makes it clean and palatable: which is the exact opposite of how death should be treated.
    Plus, say what you will about most euphemisms, they're at least usually used for the supposed benefit of human victims. "Unalive," on the other hand, is 100% for the benefit of soulless advertisers and their literal robots. No human is helped by this, it's not even _supposed_ to heal any pain, it's just a system glitch that has somehow infected our common language.

    Hugely agree. The impact on language and culture that the algorithmic internet is having is really concerning to me. People, quite frankly, have no balls and cater to hypersensitivity at the cost of reality. Since I have parents who went through deeply traumatic shit and both have PTSD as a result, it makes me very unhappy to see.

    • @jormilos
      @jormilos 3 дні тому +4

      Happens to me all the time. The worst part is there's no warnings or notifications that your posts get censored. So you can write something out and post it, and never even know that it vanished or why, save for the fact that you're still permanently subscribed to the comment thread and will get notified every time there's a comment in the thread, even though you can see your comment is missing. Truly the youtube comment section experience.

    • @scienceface8884
      @scienceface8884 2 дні тому

      @@jormilos At this point I'm convinced that I'm on the platform's naughty list. I made a comment about a particular religious and ethnic group being targeted for harassment in a particular way in the past and half of all comments I've made since then have been removed by some overzealous algorithm that assumes the worst.

  • @trumanhopper2493

    its very hypocritical to me that Chris has multiple times in the past used the funny words to not get demonetized, but when its a separate video like this that he wrote off he says them all. The real test will be if he keeps to it in future videos (whenever those come out) or hopes everyone forgot about this video and goes back to using the safe words

  • @dextergrif
    @dextergrif 3 дні тому +27

    I’m glad you talked about this, because I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently. It feels disrespectful to victims to say they were “graped by a pdf file” instead of what actually happened. Maybe if you can’t talk about the seriousness of a subject in a TikTok video, maybe that’s not the place to talk about it?

    • @Maladjester
      @Maladjester 3 дні тому +8

      I don't do TikTok at all, my impression from outside is it's a cesspool. And yet these sites are the new public square. The public square is owned and operated by people who aren't us, whose wants, values, and interests for the platform do not and will never overlap with ours. So we can be silenced by the algorithm or silenced by not using the public square. Either way, the topic gets stifled.

    I thought it was bigger than a monetization issue. I've heard and seen in action videos from channels I'm subscribed to getting suppressed due to subject material. There are videos I wouldn't have seen unless the language was softened. It's bs that censoring themselves prevents the video being censored overall, but it seems like that's where we are at.

  • @Sgt_SealCluber
    @Sgt_SealCluber 3 дні тому +5

    The irony is that in that same bit - Carlin goes in to say that the quality of our thoughts and ideas is only as good as the quality of our language and he was spot on.
    I loved this bit when I was back 10 yrs ago a senior in HS and wrote about him for my Senior paper and used it as supporting evidence.
    George Carlin got arrested so that “edgy” UA-camrs who make their entire personality around offending people for the sake of offense, all bark, no bite to wear the aesthetic of being part of the counter-culture.
