  • Director Apichatpong Weerasethakul and actress Tilda Swinton discuss Memoria, a Main Slate selection at NYFF59, with NYFF Director of Programming Dennis Lim.
    Collective and personal ghosts hover over every frame of Memoria, somehow the grandest yet most becalmed of Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s works. Inspired by the Thai director’s own memories and those of people he encountered while traveling across Colombia, the film follows Jessica (a wholly immersed Tilda Swinton), an expat botanist visiting her hospitalized sister in Bogotá; while there, she becomes ever more disturbed by an abyssal sound that haunts her sleepless nights and bleary-eyed days, compelling her to seek help in identifying its origins. Thus begins a personal journey that’s also historical excavation, in a film of profound serenity that, like Jessica’s sound, lodges itself in the viewer’s brain as it traverses city and country, climaxing in an extraordinary extended encounter with a rural farmer that exists on a precipice between life and death. Winner of the Jury Prize at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. A NEON release.

      I have no clue what this movie was all about very little dialogue and at one point the caption was in English when characters were speaking in spanish then all of a sudden the caption was in a foreign language while the characters were still speaking spanish, lol. Beautiful scenery but hated the movie.

    I wish I could appreciate this film but I feel it’s a bit beyond my grasp in terms of taste.
    I was so excited to watch this and I was left feeling empty, whereas Uncle Boonme left me with a strange warmth and understanding of Thai culture.
    I won’t get into spoiler territory but I wish the themes were explored way more as it came across as more of a modern art exhibit, displaying one frame at a time, fragmented but connected but ultimately not the payoff I was hoping for.

    • @BIGBIRD208
      @BIGBIRD208 2 роки тому +2

      @@balloonfiesta15 I think the issue stems from the style to be honest. It’s excessively slow and sells it as a “style”. Uncle Boonme worked for me in that the landscape lended such a helping hand to that story.
      Memoria doesn’t follow through on that part. Sure, it’s pretty to look at, but it’s beyond excessive with being flat and the background feels of little importance.
      And if you can fall into a deep hypnotic trance when having casual conversations with your friends, then I’m sure this movie worked for some, however I need to be engaged when having a conversation and ultimately this movie failed to do so. I can’t justify staring at two people talking for over 45 mins without a single cut and not feel like I was ripped off. Because ultimately, the themes discussed in this movie aren’t anything a few joints haven’t brought up by a camp fire. Why does filming it all of a sudden boost it’s “philosophical merit”?

      @@BIGBIRD208 I feel it's okay to admit you don't like a film, don't impose it on grasp or intelligence, emotive cinema demands none of that(when someone films something, someone does not need to think about a "philosophical merit"). You sit with, live alongside a film, not to look at a distance at images thinking of interpretations or symbolism to a moving plot or narrative. Cinema is more than that, it is more poetic and musical, not painteresque, not photographic, not novelistic, it's peak form is like music and poetry. So if Memoria is a film you don't like, don't pressure it on appreciation from grasp, let it be as if it were music you didn't like to listen to. And Uncle Boonmee is something that you liked in regards of living culture in Thailand.

    • @timsavooni8209
      @timsavooni8209 Рік тому

      I agree that it didn't leave you feeling the same way as 'Boonmee' but I think that is the point, in the same sense that some films aren't meant to illicit a comforting feeling. I think Joe and Tilda's intention was to tell a story that felt as they describe in the beginnings of this video, and to perhaps map some parallel between the themes of Jessica as a character and how Joe and any filmmaker would approach a new land and new people.

      I loved it so very much. It's already become of my favorite films-- so easy to get completely immersed in; so very evocative and eerie and serene. I immediately went and watched it a second time. Watching anything else afterwards felt impossibly jarring.
      And that said: It is definitely not a film for everyone! More like a lengthy meditation than anything. It reminded me more of his Syndromes and a Century than Uncle Boonme.

    For those who don't know, the only way to ever see the film, (as of now), is to catch it in a small theatre as it tours around the United States only, and It will apparently never be streamable or sold online. How incredibly pretentious and inconvenient. Every filmmaker, regardless of their track record in cinema, should be making it as easy as possible for fans to see their films.

    The film was so inert. I was intensely bored. I just didn’t care about shy of it. I love slow films, Tarkovsky is a favourite , but a 7 minute shot of a car park really tried my patience. what is that supposed to signify ? Films like this try to convince you of their own importance by being excruciatingly slow and ponderous. I’m not convinced. It felt incredibly contrived, I could practically hear it being discussed before bit was made.

      That's just such an obvious frustration reaction because you didn't enjoy it or find something for you in the film, that you have to put it down altogether. I know it because I've felt the same sometimes. But your gut reaction is not "the truth". Anyway that was a nice little car concerto for me. Or cars having a chat while no one was watching. I would not say worst. But I came out from the cinema yesterday feeling tricked. This movie is slow, there is no explanation at all and the whole movie should be half hours max. Two hours of longing "nothing-ness" on the screen and seeing the jungle just made me feel weird and confused. There is zero message in this movie. Zero arch of the story. No explanations. No character-development. No meaningful conversations. Hundred people can translate this iinto thousand meanings but only the director knows what was the goal here.
